When Lucas does not return from Toshing, Lady Murgatroyd and Anne-Marie set out to look for him. They find that Gudgeon has gone insane and Lucas close to death. At the mill, Anne-Marie's life is in danger.
Lucus learns how Sir Randolph came to own the mill and is disappointed when he discovers that his new friend is a girl. Meanwhile there is trouble at the mill when the workers learn that their wages are to be halved.
Lucas starts to suspect that working with Gudgeon may not be such a good idea, and Anne-Marie is having problems with the other girls who collect cigar butts.
Lucas is taken to the mill to learn the business of carpet making. He is later told by his uncle that as from the next day he will have a friend to keep him company.
Lady Murgatroyd reveals that Mr Oakapple was a close friend of Anne-Marie's father and lost his fingers saving his life. Meanwhile Gudgeon's behaviour is becoming more erratic.
