Indie streaming platform Dropout, formerly known as CollegeHumor, is vying for a spotlight at this year’s Primetime Emmys with an ambitious campaign to secure its first major nominations. With a passionate and niche audience, Variety has learned exclusively about Dropout’s top contenders submitted for Emmy love, including the innovative game show “Game Changer” and the unique interview series “Very Important People.”

Each episode introduces a new game, but the twist is that the three comedian contestants are clueless about the rules until the game begins. The blend of improv comedy and fierce competition has not only captivated audiences but also spawned three successful spinoffs: “Dirty Laundry,” “Make Some Noise” and “Play It by Ear.”

Dimension 20, Dropout‘s Dungeons & Dragons show, is coming to Madison Square Garden for a night of live Ttrpg adventure.
Dimension 20: Gauntlet at the Garden will bring together the full D20 squad, including dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan and players Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson, and Lou Wilson, who’ve been dungeoning and dragoning together since 2018.
The show will be part of the group’s Unsleeping City campaign, which is set in a fictional (as far as we know…) and clandestine sixth borough of New York City that’s powered by magic and populated by supernatural residents. So, of course, it is appropriate that the event–which is Dimension 20‘s first U.S. live show since 2019–is also taking place in NYC.

It’s shaping up to be a two-way race for Best Limited Series at the Emmys. That’s according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. Both “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Beef” have 39/10 odds as of this writing, making them virtually tied for the lead. Scroll down to see how much closer the race has gotten in recent weeks.
“Dahmer” held the lead for the most of the Emmy season. The serial killer story was a big hit for Netflix, despite controversy, and it’s the brainchild of Ryan Murphy, who previously won Best Limited Series with his other true-crime dramas “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” “Dahmer” earned a Producers Guild Award nomination for Best Limited Series, where it lost to “The Dropout,” but “Dropout” already competed at the Emmys...

The amount of versatility within a single premise is the test of a truly great game show. “Jeopardy” has the clues, “Match Game” has the risqué answers, and “Survivor” has the challenges. But maybe the most versatile game show on air right now — and going for the Emmy that “Jeopardy” has won the last three years running — is one where its entire DNA is based on being a radically different competition every episode.
Now in its fifth season on Dropout (the streaming heir to CollegeHumor), “Game Changer” features a rotating cast of improvisers standing at some very colorful podiums without any idea of the game they’re about to play. “The only way to learn is by playing, the only way to win is by learning, and the only way to begin is by beginning,” host and series creator Sam Reich says at the top of every episode. Tom Holland put his all into The Crowded Room
The Spider-Man actor recently opened up about balancing — or not balancing — his duties as an executive producer and star in the first installment of the AppleTV+ anthology series.
“This show absolutely broke me in every way possible,” Holland tells The Hollywood Reporter at The Crowded Room premiere in New York City Thursday. “I just kept my head down. I dug my heels in, and I just tried my best.”
His fellow EP, Alexandra Milchan, says Holland earned his title as producer. He was involved in the scenes, dialogues, sets and production issues, all while starring in the 10-episode series in which he’s in almost every scene.
“Tom is always prepared,” Milchan tells THR. “Tom cares, and Tom gives it all. … So, I really give it to him. He went and opened up his heart and soul. I feel like in...

Amanda Seyfried is dropping her opinion on Elizabeth Holmes’ prison sentence into the mix.
The “Dropout” Emmy winner, who portrayed the Theranos founder in the Hulu limited series, addressed Holmes’ 11-year prison sentence over defrauding investors in the medical start-up.
“There’s two kids that are hanging in the balance here. As a parent — just as a mom,” Seyfried said while promoting new series “The Crowded Room” on “Good Morning America,” adding, “Life’s not fair, but in a lot of ways it’s fair. It’s fair for her, in particular.”
Theranos raised almost $1 billion from investors and was valued at close to $4.5 billion since being founded in 2003. The company was dissolved in 2018; Holmes and former partner Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani have been ordered to pay $452 million in restitution to the investors.
Seyfried previously told IndieWire that she was drawn to “The Dropout” as the series approached Holmes’ case “from a very non-judgmental point-of-view,...

Exclusive: Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., the rising actor best known for starring in the hit Starz series Bmf (or Black Mafia Family), has signed with M88 for management.
The show inspired by a true story has Flenory playing his own father, notorious hip-hop icon and kingpin Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory Sr., who with his brother Terry “Southwest T” Flenory (Da’Vinchi) rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980s to give birth to one of the most influential crime families in the country.
The project from executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, which is heading into its third season, marks the younger Flenory’s acting debut. Prepare to be amazed — but first, prepare to be really, really confused. When it comes to boggling the mind, Emmy-award-winning writer-producer Damon Lindelof is nothing if not consistent. His latest venture might be his weirdest yet: "Mrs. Davis" is a quaint little Peacock series about the epic battle between the world's most powerful Artificial Intelligence and the nun devoted to destroying her.
The series hails from Lindelof and Tara Hernandez ("The Big Bang Theory"). Hernandez showruns the series and co-writes with Lindelof, and the two creators executive produce with directors Owen Harris ("Black Mirror: San Junipero") and Alethea Jones ("Evil"). It's one hell of a creative team, backed by a solid cast: Betty Gilpin (of "Glow" fame) stars as Simone, the nun who will hopefully save the world. Other cast members include Jake McDorman ("Dopesick"), Andy McQueen ("Station Eleven"), Margo Martindale ("Cocaine Bear"), David Arquette ("Scream"), Elizabeth Marvel ("The Dropout"), and more.

Amanda Seyfried is ready to welcome the next generation of Plastics.
The Emmy winner revealed she is still determined to be cast in the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical adaptation.
“I’m still hoping for a miracle. It’s not really up to us, is it?” Seyfried told Entertainment Tonight.
The “Dropout” actress confirmed that co-stars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and Lacey Chabert are also open to returning. “All four of us are 100 percent into it,” she said, adding that she already has a cameo idea. “Maybe the mothers of our characters? That’s what I was thinking, but listen, I have not even seen the script.”
Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are reprising their respective teacher roles almost 20 years after the original 2004 high school comedy. Fey wrote the script for the adaptation of the Tony-nominated musical, with husband Jeff Richmond behind the music and Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne directing.

Amanda Seyfried is looking back on her early career with one simple question: “Are you kidding me?”
The Emmy-nominated “Dropout” star made her screen debut as a teenager in the 1999 season of “As the World Turns” before joining “All My Children” and eventually breaking out in 2004’s “Mean Girls” plus appearing in “Veronica Mars” both at age 19.
While Seyfried told Porter magazine that she came out of the pre-#MeToo era of Hollywood “pretty unscathed,” she did open up about being in at-times uncomfortable situations.
“Being 19, walking around without my underwear on – like, are you kidding me? How did I let that happen?” Seyfried explained. “Oh, I know why: I was 19 and I didn’t want to upset anybody, and I wanted to keep my job. That’s why.”
Earlier this year Seyfried told Marie Claire in a cover story that she “always felt really grossed out” by male “Mean Girls...
The Emmy-nominated “Dropout” star made her screen debut as a teenager in the 1999 season of “As the World Turns” before joining “All My Children” and eventually breaking out in 2004’s “Mean Girls” plus appearing in “Veronica Mars” both at age 19.

The Dropout directors Michael Showalter and Francesca Gregorini zeroed in on a number of small details to help Amanda Seyfried prepare for her role as disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu miniseries.
Before the cameras rolled, the two sat down with Seyfried to discuss blocking and how they planned to tell a “cohesive” story on Holmes’ life — from childhood to her criminal trial for defrauding investors.
Contenders TV: The Nominees — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
During a Contenders Television: The Nominees award-season panel, Showalter and Gregorini recalled meeting with Seyfried to share their vision for the series.
“We just talked for like three hours, maybe even more, in general terms about the character and the story, and in a very sort of like, ‘Who is she? What do we think as individuals? What are our individual feelings about it,'” said Showalter, who is also an executive producer on the Emmy-nominated series.

‘The Dropout’ Star Naveen Andrews on How the Script Evolved to Keep up With Real-Life Theranos Trial
Hulu’s new series “The Dropout” tells the true story of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, and how she built — and subsequently lost — a billion dollar company, all on a lie. And, according to series co-star Naveen Andrews, real-time updates in Holmes’s trial did affect the show as it was being made.
Andrews stars as Sunny Balwani, Holmes’s longtime boyfriend (now ex), and former president and COO of Theranos. Balwani joined the company in 2009, but he met Holmes while they were both in China in the early 2000s for a summer program. He was 37 at the time; Holmes was 18.
Going into the series, Andrews and Amanda Seyfried, who stars as Holmes, immediately leaned into the potential power dynamic that the age gap created. Their instincts were later solidified as text messages between Holmes and Balwani were submitted as evidence during Holmes’s trial that backed up her claims that Balwani was abusive.

The great thing about television is: The story can go on as long as you want it to. Whether it’s six half-hours or two hundred hours, TV can take all the time it wants to flesh out its characters and explore every narrative avenue. But lately, some TV networks and streamers have been taking advantage of that flexibility, stretching stories that would normally be a two-hour movie into bloated eight or 10 or 12-hour limited series. Simply put: A lot of limited series these days are toooooo long.

We really should have seen this coming based on the title alone. Kate McKinnon has dropped out of The Dropout, the Hulu series about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. The Saturday Night Live comedian was set to star in and executive produce the series when it was announced in April 2019, and Hulu had ordered it straight to series. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the series is still continuing, but the lead role will be recast. The Dropout is based on the ABC News podcast of the same name and will follow the rise and fall of Holmes, a deep-voiced, turtleneck-loving blonde and her biotech start-up Theranos, the blood-testing machine that didn't work, despite...

Dropout, the roughly three-month-old subscription service from noted digital comedy brand CollegeHumor, has arrived as a native app on both iOS and Android.
The service, which offers ad-free viewing as well exclusive, uncensored content beginning at $4 per month, was previously only available on the web at Dropout.tv. In addition to original series like game show Um, Actually and the Dungeons & Dragon-inspired Dimension 20: Fantasy High, Dropout touts other visual storytelling mediums including chat stories and digital comics -- and its new apps have been optimized for these formats, the company says.
For instance, the apps support display mirroring and content casting so that viewers can watch content on their smart TVs, while comics are displayed via full-bleed, swipe-able screens. The app also features a tap-to-advance feature for messages and images sent via its Discord channel -- where Dropout members can communicate with show creators and one another with voice and text messages.
