Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” promises to put Universal on the animation throne long occupied by Disney. It also shows that video games, not comic books, are where Hollywood should be sniffing around for new franchises.
With a comparatively modest $100 million budget, Universal and Illumination’s video game adaptation shattered box office records for animated movies, earning $204 million domestically and $376 million worldwide over the long Easter weekend. But the movie also set a record for box office derived from a character that audiences likely first encountered in an arcade or on a console.
“I think we are going to see a lot more video games being made into movies,” Gerber Kawasaki CEO Ross Gerber told TheWrap. “’Super Mario Bros.’ is huge and kids relate to gaming characters. I expect way more of this.”
There’s only so long that studios can get away with rebooting “Spider-Man” or spinning off of “Star Wars.

In a fascinating interview regarding the history of Final Fantasy 11, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida (aka “Yoshi-p”) talks about his personal and professional history with the first Final Fantasy Mmo and reveals a few of the clever ways he’s helped keep the game alive.
For those who don’t know, Final Fantasy 11 was first released in 2002. The game was very well-received at that time, but it never quite reached the mainstream popularity heights of MMOs like World of Warcraft and Everquest. While Final Fantasy 11 was eventually “replaced” with a new Final Fantasy Mmo (Final Fantasy 14), Ff 11 enjoys a loyal following of fans who still play the Mmo to this day. In fact, in 2012, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy 11 had become the most profitable Final Fantasy game ever.
Still, it can be expensive to maintain and update an Mmo game, even when it’s an Mmo as respected and successful as Final Fantasy 11. Fortunately,...

2022 features quite a few notable video game anniversaries but few are bigger than the 35th anniversary of Final Fantasy. While many fans (ourselves included) will soon be finding ways to celebrate that landmark anniversary, popular clothing brand Uniqlo’s new t-shirts may be trying a bit too hard to celebrate Final Fantasy.
For those who don’t know, Uniqlo is a clothing retailer/designer founded in Japan that regularly releases products designed to celebrate major video game franchises. For instance, the company released a series of t-shirts designed to celebrate Super Mario‘s 35th anniversary in 2020, and they’ve regularly released various products based on the Pokémon franchise. While Uniqlo produces a lot more than merchandise based on video games, the company is well-known, and largely respected, among fans looking for the occasional piece of video game-inspired apparel.

Square Enix started May off with a bang by announcing that the company sold Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive, as well as those studios’ respective franchises, to Embracer Group. That umbrella organization already has its fingers in many game studios and franchises (such as Thq Nordic’s Darksiders and Deep Silver’s Saints Row), and this recent sale has only added more potentially valuable franchises to Embrace Group’s already sizable library.
Of course, this transaction raises obvious questions about what games Embracer Group actually gets out of the deal. As is often the case with these kinds of deals, the answers to those questions aren’t as straightforward as you might think.
Obviously, Square Enix franchises such as Final Fantasy were never on the table, and the announcement also states that Square Enix will retain ownership of Western-developed games such as Just Cause, Outriders, and Life is Strange. Of course,...

It’s been 30 years since The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was released in North America, and every day since the game’s debut has only made it easier to appreciate the many ways it remains the definitive Legend of Zelda experience.
Mind you, that doesn’t mean that A Link to the Past is the best Zelda game ever or the game that invented all the concepts that set the series apart. In fact, I tend to see at least a few other games get placed above A Link to the Past on fans’ personal franchise rankings, and it’s hard to deny that A Link to the Past was the “Super” version of the original Legend of Zelda in many ways.
However, there are quite a few reasons why A Link to the Past remains the quintessential Zelda experience three decades after its Western launch helped change everything.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise has entertained gamers for two decades by combining the disparate worlds of Final Fantasy and all of the characters Disney has to offer. However, while Disney’s library of properties has grown significantly since Kingdom Hearts’ humble beginnings, the House of Mouse has yet to introduce its Marvel or Star Wars franchises to the series. But according to some eagle-eyed gamers, that’s exactly what’s happening in the next entry.
Square Enix recently released a special 20th anniversary trailer for upcoming Kingdom Hearts games. The final half of the anniversary trailer then devotes time to showcasing the modernized world of Quadratum and Sora’s new photorealistic look. I love “so bad, they’re good” movies. From canonical classics like Plan 9 From Outer Space and The Room to deeply flawed gems like Miami Connection and Samurai Cop, the best “so bad, they’re good” movies are more than simple guilty pleasures. As that designation suggests, they’re movies that make it genuinely hard to answer the seemingly simple question “Is it good?”
When it comes to gaming, though, it’s always been tougher to find proper “so bad, they’re good” titles. Games like Deadly Premonition, Metal Wolf Chaos, and Harvest all arguably belong in that category, but most bad games are just fundamentally unenjoyable experiences that are fun to mock. Games that fall so far into “bad” that they somehow end up landing closer to “good” are rare.
That’s what makes Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin so special. In some ways, it’s a legitimately good game.

JRPGs live and die by their characters. After all, it’s hardly worth the effort to sit through approximately 16 Avengers Endgames worth of content if you can’t stand a game’s characters. While every gamer has their favorite Jrpg casts, most will agree that the party members of Final Fantasy 7 stand head and shoulders above some considerable competition.
It’s difficult to overstate the significance of Final Fantasy 7. The game showed audiences the power of 3D graphics and pre-rendered cutscenes, all while providing a story fueled by memorable characters and unforgettable moments. Final Fantasy 6’s Kefka Palazzo might be the best Final Fantasy villain ever because he actually succeeded in his plan to destroy the world and become a god (that is not up for debate), but Final Fantasy 7 features some of the best protagonists in this series’ history.

While there’s so much to say about the latest trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, it’s hardly a surprise that the part of the preview that’s catching everyone’s attention is its use of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way:” a seemingly strange needle drop that is actually oddly fitting.
If you haven’t seen the new trailer, I highly recommend you set aside about five minutes of your day to give it a look. It’s even crazier than the game’s absolutely wild debut trailer:
As noted above, the trailer’s most bizarre moment occurs around the 2:45 mark when the otherwise fairly standard epic fantasy soundtrack suddenly fades away and is replaced by the 1969 Frank Sinatra hit “My Way.” It’s an unexpected needle drop that initially seems to be another strange choice in what has already been a series of strange choices...

In a year that saw Final Fantasy 14 steal so much momentum (and so many players) from World of Warcraft, there was a slight amount of trepidation surrounding the release of the Mmo’s latest expansion, Endwalker. While many Ff 14 fans certainly trust the game’s developers at this point, we’ve seen too many recent game releases ruin too much goodwill to not at least be aware of the possibility that Endwalker could derail this RPG’s incredible year and remarkable comeback.
Instead, Endwalker is a triumph. It’s not only the best Ff 14 expansion yet, but there’s a strong argument to be made that Endwalker is as good as an Mmo expansion has been and can possibly be.
That’s obviously a pretty big statement, but these are just a few of the ways that Endwalker manages to overcome the shortcomings of too many other Mmo expansions while...

What should a great video game movie feel like? Should the "Final Fantasy" film mostly function like a playthrough with a bunch of extra cutscenes? Should plot developments be mostly fetch-quests? Films tell compelling stories, but an entire generation has been raised on video games, and they're used to feeling like they're participating in the plots of the media they consume, whether the project is based on a game or not.
This, I would argue, is a quality the best video game movies share, no matter how faithfully or not they adapt their button-mashing source material. But giving a fixed narrative an active sense of play is unbelievably difficult....

Many beloved video game franchises try to maintain a semblance of continuity and worldbuilding. Usually, those attempts consist of linear a-to-b narratives across sequels, but there are times when the connections between games in a franchise can be a bit perplexing. For instance, each Legend of Zelda game seems insular at first, but they actually take place in a shared world and timelines. The timeline barely makes sense, but it’s there. Final Fantasy, meanwhile, seemingly reinvents its wheel with each entry. Every title takes place in its own world with its own history and lore that is, on paper, completely separate from the rest of the series.
If you scour Reddit and other internet forums, though, you may eventually find theories that claim the Final Fantasy franchise utilizes one big, interconnected multiverse. A popular variation of that belief purports that Final Fantasy Xiv sits in the center of that...

1987’s Final Fantasy deserves all the credit it can get for helping popularize the Jrpg genre (especially in the West), expanding the scope of Nes titles, and kicking off an all-time great franchise, but was it really the first Jrpg ever made?
To help answer that question, we first have to define what a Jrpg is and what separates that subgenre from tabletop RPGs, CRPGs, ARPGs, strategy RPGs, and every other type of role-playing game out there.
The problem is that defining a Jrpg has always been an especially contentious topic. It seems easy to say that a Jrpg is an RPG made in Japan, but even that definition doesn’t satisfy everyone. For instance, Dark Souls is an RPG made in Japan, but you rarely hear fans describe it as a Jrpg.
You could use common Jrpg gameplay/design elements to help define the genre, but even that gets tricky.

While the list of things that Final Fantasy has gifted the gaming world is much longer than the one we’re bringing you today, one of the most consistently incredible aspects of this legendary RPG franchise is the quality of its casts of characters.
Even if you’ve only played one or two Final Fantasy games in your lifetime (or perhaps even just absorbed elements of the series through its prominent place in gaming culture) you likely know at least one Final Fantasy character. No matter how fantastical these games get, their heart will always be found in the heroes, villains, and even NPCs that drive some of the greatest adventures in RPG history.
Which Final Fantasy character is the best of them all, though? That’s a question fans will never find a universally approved answer to, but I’m willing to bet most personal shortlists include at least...

Playing “Neo: The World Ends With You” invites quite a few questions. Some pop up mid-game, like, “What ludicrously over-the-top thing is Nagi, a self-described edgelord and one of the game’s funniest characters, going to say next?” Others are tied to characters: “Just what is Sho Minamimoto, video gaming’s coolest mathematician, scheming and why is he working with the inexperienced protagonists?” Perhaps most importantly: “Why does this game have frequent frame rate drops despite looking worse than the 14-year-old title it follows?”
There’s a lot to like in “Neo: The World Ends With You,” from its wacky urban fantasy story that aptly infuses outlandish plot devices into contemporary Shibuya, Japan, to its intricate combat system that allows players to mix and match an impressive variety of abilities. For fans of Square Enix’s 2007 Nintendo DS hit “The World Ends With You,” the sequel is laser-focused on titillating the senses and,...

The Tokyo Olympics are officially underway. After a year of delays and uncertainties due to Covid-19, the 2021 Summer Olympics (still officially referred to as the “2020 Olympics”) kicked off with a dazzling though at times subdued Opening Ceremony Friday evening in Japan.

Google’s latest playable “Doodle” unsurprisingly celebrates the ongoing 2021 Tokyo Olympic games but surprisingly furthers that event’s prominent video game theme by paying tribute to some of the most notable RPGs of the 8 and 16-bit eras.
The “lore” behind this Doodle game is strangely compelling. It casts you as a cat tasked with exploring Champion Island: a “world filled with seven sports mini-games, legendary opponents, dozens of daring side quests, and a few new (and old) friends.” Your goal is to choose a faction, compete in various sports events, find seven sacred scrolls, and perhaps finish a few optional challenges found throughout Champion Island.
The bulk of the Doodle consists of several Olympics-inspired minigames that are all relatively simple from a mechanical standpoint, but greatly benefit from both their accessibility and how they contribute to the Doodle’s surprisingly engaging theme. They also theoretically serve as the basis for...

While many people assumed the Tokyo Olympics 2021 opening ceremony would feature video games in some way, few suspected that the whole event would be scored by some truly incredible video game music.
Sure, it would have been easy to throw a couple of legendary video game songs into the ceremony’s soundtrack and call it a day, but the event’s organizers went one step further and found some surprising deep-dive tracks from the history of video game music. They’re all great tunes, but what’s more impressive are the ways that they so perfectly fit the energy and spirit of the Olympics.
Here’s a look (and a listen) at every video game song that was featured during the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony:

The Tokyo Olympic Games got underway on Friday a year late and after much rethinking — not to mention behind the scene drama and protests. Its opening ceremony, without spectators in the stadium, began in both spectacular and ethereal fashion.
With a mixture of pre-recorded and live performances in the stadium, the ceremony opened with fireworks around the top of the roof-less stadium in indigo, blue and white in the shape of a fan, an auspicious symbol in Japan.
As well as interpretative dances enacting traditional practices from Japanese culture such as woodwork, there was also a sequence with athletes, dressed in white, practising alone across the stadium on exercise equipment including treadmills, rowing machines and stationary bikes with some athletes even working out on imaginary equipment, representing the isolation and challenges represented by the last eighteen months.

During a recent Final Fantasy 14 livestream, director Naoki Yoshida acknowledged that the game has been converting a lot of World of Warcraft players lately but asked fans to please be reasonable about any discussions about Final Fantasy 14 somehow beating World of Warcraft or ending the Mmo’s reign of dominance.
“Blizzard is definitely aware of this, but without World of Warcraft, [Final Fantasy 14] A Realm Reborn wouldn’t exist,” Yoshida said. “WoW was the game we constantly looked up to…our goal was to recreate a Final Fantasy version of WoW, so saying we won or lost to WoW is off-base to start with, because they were the game we aspired to be.”
Yoshida later states that “this whole conversation about surpassing WoW is the wrong conversation to have and it’s honestly irritating.” When the interviewer seemingly jokes that he was hoping Yoshida would say something about being the best, Yoshida...

We’re pretty sure that the queen eliminated from Episode 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 6 was kidding when she cursed out her fellow contestants as she sashayed away — but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t seething.

The recently released Final Fantasy “pixel remasters” are already causing a surprising amount of controversy over the one element of these classic games you’d think would be impossible to get wrong: their font.
See, Square Enix says that these remasters are intended to visually reimagine the original Final Fantasy games through “universally updated 2D pixel graphics” that deliver “timeless stor[ies] told through charming retro graphics.” While it’s certainly a little strange to suggest that retro games need to be updated with retro graphics, the basic idea is that the company is trying wants to use modern 2D pixel art technology to upgrade the look of the first six Final Fantasy adventures while maintaining their original ar styles as much as possible. Ideally, that graphical “smoothing” would especially benefit the original three Nes Final Fantasy titles and their obviously dated visuals.

Reviewing any adaptation requires two trains of thought: is it a good representation of the source material, and is it a good story standing on its own. Frankly, I don’t play video games or watch much animation these days, so in watching the 4K Ultra HD release of Sony’s 2005 Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, I had to view it as a story only.
I do know how wildly successful and popular the Final Fantasy franchise has been through the years and apparently this seventh iteration was a real big deal once upon a time. So, I’m told the film begins where the game left off which means it has to recap enough for those, like me, new to this, and fast enough so as not to bore the diehard fans.

E3 had a lot to prove going into its 2021 edition. After the expo was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some gamers wondered whether the show was still even relevant. At a time when publishers and studios can communicate directly with their fans through live streams and social media, why is a centralized trade show necessary?
Well, the all-virtual E3 2021 made a strong argument that the expo is still the biggest event of the year for the games industry, bringing plenty of big announcements from some of the most important companies in the business, including Xbox, Bethesda, Nintendo, Capcom, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, and Ubisoft. Together, these publishers mapped out the future of the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC gaming.
Here are the very Best games and announcements showcased at E3 2021:

We already knew that the recently leaked Final Fantasy Origin (now formally known as Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin) would debut during Square Enix’s E3 2021 showcase, but nothing could quite prepare us for just how crazy the game’s first trailer would be or the many bizarre ways that it referenced the original Final Fantasy game.
Actually, you’re forgiven if you watched Final Fantasy Origin‘s debut trailer and didn’t even realize that it appears to be a kind of retelling of the original Final Fantasy game. While some of the specifics of the relationship between Team Ninja’s Final Fantasy spin-off and 1987’s Final Fantasy remain unknown, the two clearly share a number of plot points and characters. Because the trailer honestly did a pretty bad job of making that clear, though, only hardcore Final Fantasy fans were probably able to those references.

E3 is the most exciting time of the year for the gaming industry. It’s when all of our favorite publishers and studios get together to show us what the future holds for interactive entertainment. By the end of E3 2021, we’ll know what’s next for the Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC gaming. You can check out a complete schedule of E3 2021 conferences here.
Not all of the show’s massive reveals are reserved for the trade show, though. After all, E3 season is also a time for major leaks. Indeed, it only takes one Reddit poster, one dataminer, one accidental listing on Amazon (or the PlayStation Store) to spoil a big surprise.
Despite the fact that E3 2021 is an all-virtual event, meaning less opportunities for sneaky leakers to snap pictures from the expo show floor, this year is no different. Here are the biggest leaks...

Along with the new characters come a wide variety of connections to other parts of the saga, as well as some video game in-jokes. Take a look at all the Star Wars references and connections we found this week:

Even if you’ve never played a Dragon Quest game, you’ve undoubtedly played other titles influenced by the series. Basic Jrpg tropes like the overhead view, turn-based combat, and the medieval fantasy setting all got their start with the original Dragon Quest (then called Dragon Warrior in the West).
While many of these game design innovations are attributed to Final Fantasy, which was released in North America first, the Japanese release of Dragon Quest actually beat Final Fantasy by a full year at a time when Square and Enix were still separate companies. In fact, Final Fantasy probably wouldn’t exist if not for the massive success of Dragon Quest.
Since then, the series has seen plenty of ups and downs. While Dragon Quest has always been a huge hit in Japan, the original game sold so poorly in the U.S. that it was given away with subscriptions to Nintendo Power.

Since then, the series has seen plenty of ups and downs. While Dragon Quest has always been a huge hit in Japan, the original game sold so poorly in the U.S. that it was given away with subscriptions to Nintendo Power.

While we already knew about Final Fantasy 16 and the upcoming PS5 port of the Final Fantasy 7 remake (which will include new content), recent rumors and a report from Fanbyte that cites Square Enix sources suggest that Final Fantasy Origin will be one of the franchise’s most ambitious new projects in year.
