Baroness Jacqueline Foster took to X today to apologize “for my part in posts made about” Melika Gorgianeh in the aftermath of the episode, which had caused a furore on social media as people believed the mascot and colors to be coded.
“I wrongly alleged that Ms Gorgianeh chose one of the most disgusting antisemitic symbols, a blue octopus as her team’s mascot which I held her responsible for,” said Foster. “I accept that these allegations were completely false and unfounded. I made a grave mistake in making those posts and I should not have done so.”

The BBC has cancelled the festive edition of its longest running TV quiz show after contestants complained that producers had failed to support them participating with disabilities.
The Times reports that both the BBC and Lifted Entertainment which makes the show, have apologized for the “distressing” experience suffered by one of the contestants on the Christmas edition of University Challenge.
The contestant who is blind, had asked for an audio description facility, but was told minutes before recording began that this could not be provided.
“We were told that your captain will instead have to explain everything,” they told BBC News. “It was distressing. I [got] in touch to say I’d prefer not to have the manifestation of my disability broadcast on network TV in the run-up to Christmas.”
A fellow contestant, who is neurodivergent, had asked for subtitles to help them answer the questions speedily, but this request had been turned down.

The BBC has pulled a University Challenge Christmas special episode from its festive schedule following complaints by two disabled contestants.
According to BBC News, one blind and one neurodivergent contestant took part in the episode – which features teams of distinguished alumni who compete on behalf of their former universities – but it won’t air following grievances over a lack of audio description and subtitles. The contestants have not been named.
One of the contestants was quoted by BBC News saying the experience was “distressing” and the other “overwhelming and overstimulating.” The first said they were told one minute before the show that there would be no audio description and “your captain will instead have to explain everything,” according to the BBC News article, while the second claimed a request for subtitles made in advance was turned down.

The BBC has been forced to deny claims that an octopus mascot on quiz University Challenge was displayed by contestants as a coded attack on Jewish people.
Screenshots of Monday night’s episode are going viral on X (formerly Twitter), with users claiming that the mascot bears a resemblance to antisemitic Nazi propaganda.
There are also allegations that contestant Melika Gorgianeh was wearing the colors of the Palestinian flag during her appearance on University Challenge, Britain’s longest-running quiz show.
Ben Obese-Jecty, who will stand to be a Conservative Party MP at the next UK election, said the University Challenge episode was “disgraceful.” “Antisemitism is fast becoming normalised,” he added.
The BBC argued that the combination of the octopus, Gorgianeh’s jacket, and the timing of the episode was coincidence rather than conspiracy.

Is Richard Osman’s House of Games the perfect teatime quiz show? It’s certainly in contention. Silly, funny and warm, it makes very good company. The armchairs exude a sense of convivial relaxation. There are no flashing-lights podiums or tense burden of cash prizes, making it a wholly gentler experience than, say, The Chase. It keeps the same four contestants all week long, meaning that the kind of rapport other quiz shows try to manufacture in rapid-fire Q&As with the host can naturally develop. The personalities and relationships are almost as important as the rounds and questions, and it’s all done with a sense of humour – from the deliberately naff 1970s gameshow-style fondue sets and carriage clock prizes, to the enjoyable silliness behind almost every round.
To celebrate the new series airing now on weekdays at 6pm on BBC Two, here are a few fun titbits about the show.

Exclusive: The BBC has apologized after broadcasting a documentary in which presenter Amol Rajan is filmed in the back of a taxi not wearing a seatbelt.
The documentary, How to Crack the Class Ceiling, was broadcast in December last year and, around 11 minutes in, features Rajan delivering a piece to camera from the back of a cab.
The presenter can be clearly seen not wearing a seatbelt, which is against the law in the UK when the safety device is available.
The BBC said: “In the course of making this programme the presenter was filmed travelling by cab without using a seatbelt. This was a mistake for which we apologise.”
Rajan appears to be traveling through London in the clip. The Metropolitan Police website states that people can be fined up to £500 ($606) for not wearing a seatbelt.
The police force has been contacted for comment. Rajan has also been contacted for comment.

Channel 5 has been praised for being the only UK public service broadcaster not to show any Queen-related coverage on Monday 19 September, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
While BBC One, BBC Two and ITV all aired the funeral live and Channel 4 showed a documentary on the Queen, Channel 5 chose to air animated children’s film The Emoji Movie.
The choice went down well with some viewers. One tweeted that they “don’t understand the criticism of Channel 5 for showing The Emoji Movie during the queen’s funeral”, adding: “What are kids of families who don’t have paid TV/streaming supposed to do otherwise, sit and watch people in suits look overly sad for six hours?”
“Channel 5 deserve a lot of respect for this,” another posted. “Airing an entire day’s worth of kid and family-friendly content to give us a break from wall-to-wall bleakness is a great move.

Amol Rajan has been announced as the new presenter of University Challenge.
On Tuesday (16 August), Jeremy Paxman revealed that he’d be stepping down from his role as host after 28 years, ending his reign as the longest-serving current quizmaster on British television.
Currently the BBC’s media editor, Rajan was the editor of The Independent from 2013 to 2016.
In a statement, Rajan said: “Being asked to host my favourite TV programme is dream-come-true territory. I have watched University Challenge obsessively for years, addicted to its high standards, glorious title music, and inspirational contestants.
“It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about young people, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the sofa.”
Rajan initially joined The Independent in August 2007. Before becoming the editor in June 2013, he moved around the publication in the roles of news reporter,...

Like the Doctor in the Tardis, the new presenter of University Challenge will know they have a hard act to follow, as Jeremy Paxman’s withering looks and razor-sharp question-mastery have become part of the show’s very identity. And, much like the new Doctor, when the BBC announced it would name University Challenge’s next host later this week, it prompted fierce speculation on social media.
So who could it be? While former Question Time and Newsnight presenters make some obvious choices, the new host will need to be someone with enough time in their schedule, and popular picks like Clive Myrie and Jeremy Vine are already busy with quiz shows Mastermind and Eggheads, respectively.
But that still leaves us with plenty of predictions. Fingers on buzzers! Here’s our starter for ten…

Jeremy Paxman is to step down from stalwart BBC quiz show University Challenge after almost three decades.
The former Newsnight presenter will film his last episode this fall and his final series will air from August to next Summer.
A new presenter will be announced later this week for the UK’s longest-running quiz show.
Paxman said he’d “had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years” and had “been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and meet some of the ‘swottier’ brains in the country.”

Paxman led a revived BBC Two Newsnight, which is based on U.S. format College Bowl, from 1994 after the ITV Studios-produced show was axed by ITV in 1987 following a 25-year run helmed by Bamber Gascoigne.

It’s all very well for game shows to sit there and ask all the questions. How would they feel if we turned the tables and started to interrogate them? Then the quizzing shoe would be on the other foot.

Last night, a University Challenge contestant became internet famous for getting a fright when his teammate buzzed in to answer a question.
Theology student Charlie Clegg - appearing with his St John's College, Oxford teammates - seemed to be quite surprised by the use of the buzzer.
They're loud, those buzzers (watch to the end) #universitychallenge pic.twitter.com/hN68ALHE13

It's even funnier than the time a guy rocked up to University Challenge wearing a pleather vest and chunky silver chain combo.
Naturally, Twitter found the whole thing completely hilarious:

Jeremy Paxman will anchor the 2015 general election coverage on Channel 4.
The former Newsnight presenter will head up the evening, with further details of the coverage to be announced in the coming months.
Paxman said: "There are new and interesting questions to ask about the way we choose our governments. This should be fun."
Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt says: "Jeremy is a compelling presenter and makes truly unmissable TV for those big political moments.
"His sense of mischief and danger make him a fantastic fit with Four."
Paxman worked for the BBC since 1972 and was a presenter on Newsnight from 1989 until June 2014.
Last month, Paxman was confirmed to be in talks to move to Channel 4.
"I have known Jeremy for years and worked with him on Newsnight [at the BBC]," said Hunt at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Paxman presented his last edition of the BBC Two show after 25 years earlier this month.
Speaking at the Chalke Valley History Festival, he spoke about the final edition which featured a tandem bike ride through London with Boris Johnson, in which the London Mayor called him the "last" one-nation Tory at the BBC.
"I have to be frank, I suppose I am a one-nation Tory, yes," Paxman said. "Look, Newsnight is made by 13-year-olds. It's perfectly normal when you're young that you want to change the world.

Paxman closed the broadcast with the message: "Thank you for watching Newsnight. I hope you continue to enjoy it. Goodnight and goodbye."
After the credits, he stood in front of a weather map to present one final forecast: "And tomorrow's weather - more of the same. I don't know why they make such a fuss about it."
During the programme, Paxman jokingly asked Johnson why London's Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme - otherwise known as "Boris Bikes" - were "such a failure".

Jeremy Paxman has announced that he is quitting BBC Two's flagship Newsnight programme.
The BBC confirmed that Paxman had made the decision to leave last summer, but had agreed to stay on until June 2014, to help the new editorial team bed in after a "difficult period" for the programme.
BBC director general Tony Hall said: "This is a particularly poignant moment for me, because I have known Jeremy and relished working with him since the day I joined the BBC in 1973.
"And I am therefore better placed than most to know what a remarkable job he has done at Newsnight."
He continued: "His is a rare and dazzling talent. He has a unique ability to create moments of real discomfort for politicians and memorable delight for audiences.
"For that cussed brilliance and much more besides, the BBC and our audiences will always be in his debt."

Jeremy Paxman is to make his Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut.
The Newsnight and University Challenge presenter will put on a one-man show for a week at the Pleasance theatre, Radio Times reports.
Paxo will be an hour-long show, in which he will discuss topics involving "pogonophobia, underpants and the human condition".
"I have no idea why I'm doing this. Some fool said you only regret the things in life that you don't do. But I'm regretting this already," he said.
Director Sarah Esdaile said of the show: "I am looking forward very much to harnessing Jeremy's positive mental attitude, and giving our audiences in Edinburgh a little insight into the enigmatic Mr Paxman and what makes him tick."
Audience members will also be given the "opportunity to quiz the grand inquisitor".
Paxman's show will run from Monday, August 18 to Monday, August 25. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow (April 10) from 10am.

Sometimes, some of us Doctor Who aficionados are an ungrateful bunch. After spending more than a decade in the wilderness, the programme was brought back into the fold and welcomed with open arms and critical acclaim. And yet, from time to time, us fans just can't resist the odd grumble when things don't quite go our way. Me myself, I'm guilty as charged – if the era of Russell T Davies was, by and large, very much to my liking (albeit with one or two scowls), the last couple of years haven't thrilled me so much. A good chunk of my last few reviews, in particular, have read like the frenzied burblings of Victor Meldrew.
Which kind of makes me feel a bit sad. I tuned into the behind-the-scenes documentary of the last story, The Time Of The Doctor, and evidently, everyone was giving it 110% to make Matt Smith go out with a bang.

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2006, and a further 25 overlooked gems...
With all the major films that elbow their way into their cinemas every year, there's bound to be some casualties among the big hits. And just like any other year, 2006 was dominated by the likes of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown. But in tandem, there were dozens of lesser-seen films which shuffled in and out of cinemas (or occasionally, didn't get a release in cinemas at all) without very many people noticing.
As we're sure you're aware by now, these lists aim to redress the balance a little, and hopefully introduce a few films from any given year that you may have missed. There are also one or two films that, although...

The BBC has apologised after a wrong answer was provided on University Challenge.
Cambridge University's Clare College was asked to name the Czech composer of a piece of music played on the BBC Two quiz.
The team incorrectly guessed Smetana, before host Jeremy Paxman stated that the correct answer was Dvorak.
However, music experts soon contacted the BBC to explain that the piece was actually a Gregorian plainchant - a form of medieval church music - and was not composed by Dvorak.
BBC Singers and Radio 3 producer Helen Garrison tweeted: "Appalled at the ignorance of question on #universitychallenge".
Clare College went on to beat Christ Church, Oxford in a tie-break round, and moved forward to the quarter-finals.
A BBC spokeswoman later said: "On this week's programme we played an excerpt from Dvorak's Requiem.
"We used several music sources which indicated that the entire piece was under Dvorak's name.
"However we were wrong in this instance,...

Jeremy Paxman became a Twitter trending topic last night (August 12), after he appeared with a beard on TV for seemingly the first time.
The broadcaster resembled Charles Dance as he was seen sporting stubble on Newsnight, prompting Twitter users to discuss and joke about the unexpected facial fuzz.
Gary Bainbridge wrote: "Night Editors: Quick, put Paxman's beard on Page 1 so he has to mention it when he does the papers."
Lauren Laverne tweeted: "I like the beard. It's Fawkesian. Doublet next."
Ian Rankin joked: "It is 1973 and I'm really digging the new album by Paxman's Beard..."
Meanwhile, Kirstie Allsopp said: "Paxo with a beard is like me going blonde, there are just some things that are not meant to be."
Fellow BBC presenter Emily Maitlis tweeted: "Right that's it. I'm working on a moustache for Thursday's newsnight."
Other viewers jokingly pointed out that Paxman's beard must grow quite fast, as...
