Seriously, how perfectly timed was The Expanse Season 2 Episode 3 to offer parallels to some serious, present-day, world-order issues?
Spot on.
The show creators tick a ton of boxes: xenophobia, anti-immigrant backlash, patriotism, military aggression, vigilante justice, corporate ethics, bioterrorism, genocide, secret back-channel communications between government officials and an alleged terrorist group, and a religious order offering salvation to a lost soul.
But they were intertwined in such a way that it doesn’t at all feel as if the pertinent issues are just boxes being ticked. The impeccable timing and solid execution — with some breathtaking visual effects — combined to deliver another strong episode.
Meanwhile, big, bad Protomolecule was slithering and oozing all over Eros asteroid and, as Cortazar, the captured Protogen scientist excitedly noted, was “building something.”
But some of the most interesting action wasn’t taking place on the Rocinante or on Tycho Station. It’s on the Scirroco,...

Bret “Hitman” Hart began his career in his father’s Stampede Wrestling promotion, before achieving global superstardom in the World Wrestling Federation in the ’80’s and ’90’s. His no-nonsense attitude, and the legitimacy that came with being a Hart Brother from the infamous family Dungeon enabled Bret to bypass the cartoon gimmicks that were handed out to his WWF colleagues.
And so, while his peers on the WWF roster were saddled with ludicrous personas (such as the gifted Terry Taylor being made to cluck and strut as The Red Rooster), Bret was able to sidestep all of the cornball nonsense and continually be presented as a serious athlete.
Forget the multiple championship wins, being presented simply as a wrestler in Vince McMahon’s 80’s universe, was perhaps Bret’s greatest accomplishment.

I think it’s safe to say the Sons of Anarchy went easy on us this week.
After last Tuesday’s super-sized, thoroughly brutal premiere, the final season’s second installment was much less of a roller coaster ride — y’know, as far as Sons of Anarchy episodes go.
But with this being the Sons’ final ride, even Tuesday’s tame (by comparison) hour wasn’t without its share of bloodshed.

Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff talks The Haunting In Connecticut, the ghost in her house, and missed opportunities...
You probably know Katee Sackhoff best as Starbuck from the 2004 Battlestar Galactica reimagining. Gender-swapping such an iconic and well-loved might’ve seemed blasphemous at first, but Katee made the role her own.
Her Starbuck is layered, sympathetic, and undeniably badass; she’s probably one of the most interesting characters in any sci-fi show, and it’s the kind of performance you don’t forget. (Is it obvious yet that I’m kind of a fan?)
Since BSG ended, Katee’s appeared in a ton of TV shows, including The Big Bang Theory and 24, and starred in a handful of genre movies, including Riddick. The thing we were due to talk to her about, though, was her role in horror sequel The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia,...

Apologies to the five or so of you who read this with any regularity, there was no column last week. Day job woes and Christmas combined to stomp my ass into a fug of inactivity in terms of watching and writing about it. Therefore you get a bumper edition this week with two weeks’ worth of content.
In other big news House of Cards returns to Netflix with season two in February and the Turbo super-fast snail animated series, based on that DreamWorks film that recently came out, debuts in December. Now TV also has you covered during Christmas week by adding a new big title pretty much every day between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, although apart from Elf on Now TV and a dedicated Christmas selection, there is a disturbing lack of Christmas themed films on the other services.
Someone add National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and Gremlins quick!

Los Angeles, May 27: Actress-designer Dita Von Teese says she uses lots of beauty and hair care products to achieve her glamorous look and can't live without any of them.
The "Romancing Sara" star revealed that she does everything on her own from make-up to choosing outfits.
"Three? Oh my god, it's more like 300! If you only knew, I have a lot of things that I absolutely can't do without. Even for my shows, I do everything by myself, from make-up to choosing my own outfits," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Teese as saying.
However, the actress believes make-up can only go so far and the only way to exude sex appeal is to.

John Carter hasn’t exactly soared at the box office, but as Duncan explains, it’s still a wonderful family fantasy in the tradition of Star Wars…
As the end credits rolled for John Carter, I glanced around to see the reactions on the other audience members’ faces and spotted a mesmerised young boy, sat next to his dad, his huge 3D glasses still dutifully on his face. I turned to my wife and said, “Well there’s going to be a whole generation of kids that grow up thinking John Carter of Mars [unlike the advertising, I’m not willing to let the second bit of the title go] is the greatest movie ever.” And indeed, I hope they do.
Like so many of us, I grew up on Star Wars - it was and still is the greatest and most important franchise of all time, for me, with The Empire Strikes Back still firmly my favourite film, despite strong competition over the years from the likes of Indiana Jones,...

Anderson Cooper defended the "Today" show's fourth hour hosts during his "Ridiculist" segment on Friday by taking on what he called "Kathie Lee and Hoda haters."
Cooper said that like "his eyes," Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb were considered national treasures. Cooper said he had never seen anything "unusual" during Gifford and Kotb's show, and wondered what "haters," like "The Soup's" Joel McHale and "Saturday Night Live's" Kristin Wiig, consistently mocked. He then ran a clip of Gifford and Kotb engaged in a feisty on-air pillow fight.
"What's so strange about that?" he asked. "You think Blitzer and Cafferty don't have pillow fights in 'The Situation Room'? If you only knew what went on in 'The Situation Room," Cooper said of his CNN colleagues Wolf Blitzer and Jack Cafferty.

This should make the next season of 'Khloe and Lamar' very interesting. Update: Lamar will rejoin the Mavericks after he gets back into shape with the Texas Legends. He hasn't been traded off the team, just sent down to their minor league team. Talk about a Kardashian Krisis! News just broke that Lamar Odom will no longer play for the Dallas Mavericks, as he has been demoted to the team's D-league affiliate, the Texas Legends. What's even more shocking is that Espn reports it was Lamar's idea to play for the Legends after leaving the Mavericks Feb. 22 to be with his ill father. So what does this mean for Khloé Kardashian? For now, at least, it shouldn't affect her too much. The Legends are based in Frisco, Texas, which is relatively close to Dallas. (Good thing she won't have to move -- Again!) And she hasn't made any official remarks about the demotion,...

Series like Call the Midwife and Scott & Bailey are attracting record audiences with a mix of strong female characters
Call the Midwife has been crowned as the BBC's most successful new drama of the past decade, thanks to its mix of strong female characters and a realistic portrayal of childbirth. Now ITV is poised to strike back, with a female detective series also entirely shaped by women.
Industry figures believe these programmes represent a tipping point, with women now producing, writing, directing and acting in more television drama than ever before – and their efforts are proving hugely successful.
Pippa Harris, executive producer of Call the Midwife, said: "It is an interesting moment. We have always had women producers and drama executives, but now we are seeing women directors and writers taking centre stage. It does make a tonal difference and it is leading to a shift in the dramas we are seeing.

It's all been leading up to this, folks - in an episode likely to go down in television history for sheer effed-uppedness (I'm sure there's an Emmy category for that, right?), American Horror Story laid it all out on the living room table last night in an episode simply titled "Birth" ("Afterbirth" comes next week).
Are we ready to see the edgiest show on basic cable put its blood money where its mouth is?
1984
Constance (Jessica Lange) is passed out in front of a fresh game of solitaire And an episode of Newhart. (Atta girl!) It must have been an episode that Julia Duffy wasn't in - those were real snoozers!
A blonde kid with a metal toy truck bangs around her pickled, prostrate form - the basement door opens on its own, and he goes down, truck-first. His toy rolls into the darkness. Wait, is this Tate? I guess it would be.

An ambitious attempt to write a 'personal' history of cinema is sometimes intelligent but rarely convincing
Maxim Gorky, the first major writer to record his impressions of the cinema, wrote in his local newspaper the day after seeing the first Lumière brothers show in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896: "Last night I was in the Kingdom of Shadows. If you only knew how strange it is to be there … I was at Aumont's and saw Lumière's cinématographe – moving photography. The extraordinary impression it creates is so unique and complex that I doubt my ability to describe it with all its nuances." A few years later Rudyard Kipling wrote Mrs Bathurst, the first significant work of fiction inspired by the movies, a mysteriously haunting tale of a sailor driven to his death by a brief newsreel he obsessively views in Cape Town. The new medium had the power to disturb, to fascinate,...

This final wrap comes with a reminder that all our reviews, interviews and coverage of the coverage is indexed right here.
"Throughout her nearly half-century career, actress Charlotte Rampling has rarely shied away from exposing herself onscreen," writes Jordan Mintzer in the Hollywood Reporter. "In the new bio documentary The Look, she bares it all yet again, but this time in a series of compelling discussions with different artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers." Karina Longworth for the Voice: "Director Angelina Maccarone intersperses well-chosen clips from Rampling's greatest acting hits, which hammer home the larger themes, and also offer a much-needed reminder that Max, Mon Amour exists. It's breezy and entertaining, but only occasionally more than superficially insightful. Ideal catch-it-on-cable-on-a-hungover-Saturday viewing."
More from Mark Adams (Screen) and Boyd van Hoeij (Variety). Catherine Shoard interviews Rampling for the Guardian. Clips: 1 and 2. Until The Look hits cable, we have the Charlotte Rampling gallery at everyday_i_show.

We already have entries rolling on Midnight in Paris and Pirates 4, both updated through today, and, as the Playlist puts it in a headline today, there's "Not Much Else" opening in the metroplexes today. Otherwise, though, there's plenty going on.
Migrating Forms opens at Anthology Film Archives today and runs through May 29. You may remember how promising that lineup is. "Forms grew out of the New York Underground Film Festival," writes Tom McCormack in a terrific overview at Alt Screen, "and it expands upon that fest’s interest in bringing together heterogeneous material: the celluloid revival of the American avant-garde, the rough-hewn outer edges of the European art-house, old curios, New Media, the academy, the grindhouse, and the gutter. As a result, Forms has some of the most unpredictable and interesting — and some of the best—programming of any Us festival." Fans still missing 'Dirty Sexy Money' are now mourning anew. The matriarch of the dysfunctional Darling clan, Jill Clayburgh, died last week at the age of 66.
If you only knew Clayburgh from her work on the sometimes-outrageous Manhattan drama, you probably had more of a connection to her than you think. She made several appearances on 'The Practice', 'Nip/Tuck', 'Law & Order', and played 'Ally McBeal's mother.
Away from TV, here's another piece of Clayburghia: did your high school ever put on a production of 'Pippin'? ('fess up!) Clayburgh was 'Pippin's original Catherine on Broadway in the early 1970s.

I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anybody that the porn industry exploits its performers. Many impressionable young people with stars in their eyes arrive in La every day and realize all too soon that this is a hard town, an unforgiving town. And for whatever reason wind up doing porn. Your heart goes out to them (more the girls, but still). There is a new trend in Adult Entertainment that I find disturbing. Companies are beginning to produce XXX parodies of popular sitcoms (like The Brady Bunch, Cosby, and Cheers). I have no problem with that. If you only knew some of the stuff we all pitched in the room that didn't get in I guarantee it was rougher than those parodies. But here's my problem. It's one thing to ask these porn "stars" to do degrading acts like have...

Written by Goldman and Andrea Cagan, "Running" tells the harrowing story of how Goldman lost both her legs below the knee after being trapped in a blizzard for 11 days at age 19. She suffered through multiple surgeries and prosthetics fittings as she graduated from college and became a teacher, motivational speaker and sprinter who competed for a spot on the 2000 U.S. Paralympic team.
The notoriety led to Goldman appearing in her own Adidas commercial and as the Spice Girl Robot in Steven Spielberg's 2001 film "Artificial Intelligence: AI."
Repped by Preferred Artists, Goldstein wrote the upcoming Hallmark telefilms "The Wish List" and "Mystery Girl." He also wrote the scripts for the romantic comedies "If You Only Knew" and "Politics of Love," the latter of which director William Dear ("The Perfect Game") is shooting.

While the official line is still that Fall Out Boy are "on a break" or "decompressing," Pete Wentz may have just confirmed what many Fob fans feared: The band is over, or at the very least, he's done with them.
It all started late Monday night, when Wentz began an impromptu Q&A session with Fob fans on his Twitter account. Within minutes, he started speaking openly about the band's status, telling one fan, "Don't you get it? A hiatus is forever until you get lonely or old. I don't plan on either."
Then, when asked about his future with Fob, he dropped a bomb. "I can't imagine playing in Fob again," he wrote. "Something would have to change in my head or my heart ... not my wallet.
