Cliff Lok's European Vacation
ckormos16 August 2015
Cliff Lok has good kung fu and so did at least 100 other stunt men working for $10 a day in 1974. I like Cliff Lok but this movie certainly didn't make him any additional fans. The first problem was not enough fight scenes but actually more fight scenes would not have helped. When an Asian martial artist goes to Europe he has to fight European stunt men (or make up a story involving hordes of Asians in Europe). At the time there was not a non-Asian alive that could match even the most average Asian stunt man in a fight sequence. The result is the pathetic final fight in this movie. Lee Kwan is along for comic relief and that is his forte. After that all that is left is white girl boobs. They tried hard but it ends up like a home Super8 movie.

Chinese Kung Fu Against the Godfather
winner5525 October 2006
ej's kung-fu capsule review for films of the chop-socky old-school - 1. basic plot type - Really a Chinese travelogue disguised as a kung fu film.

2. plot construction - Very weak.

3. dramatic - Tries hard; succeeds sometimes.

4. funny - Rarely, though it tries hard at this too.

5. dialog - Pretty banal.

6. cast performance - OK, but not more than competent.

7. crew performance - OK, but never more than competent.

8. amount of fighting - Surprisingly little.

9. quality of fighting - Surprisingly commonplace.

10. special any cast or crew notes - The star of this film started out as a character actor at Shaw Bros., and later achieved most renown in "Duel of the Seven Tigers"; this early star-vehicle doesn't make much use of his talents, which, admittedly, are a little limited anyway.

A very early film from director Lee Tso Nan, who clearly knows how to make movies, but makes them too quickly to avoid goofs and gaffs.

11. big positive - Odd historical document on life in Amsterdam in the mid-1970s.

12. big negative - Do we come to kung fu films to see historical documents on life in '70s Amsterdam?! bottom-line - who should see this movie - Kung fu completists only.
