Jia Jia, who reigned as the world’s oldest living panda in captivity, was euthanized Sunday at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park. She was 38 panda years, or about 114 in equivalent human years. (The life expectancy of a giant panda in the wild is about 20 years.)
Jia Jia’s health had been in decline for the past two weeks, Ocean Park said in a statement. Her appetite had declined to about a third of what it once was, and she rapidly lost almost nine pounds. On Sunday, she was unable to walk and spent the day lying down, at which point...

(The following reviews pertain to the UK Region 2 releases)
When I'm in the right mood I adore bit of film noir. I admire the diversity of its storytelling, I love every facet, from the hardboiled private eyes, duplicitous dames and characters that seldom turn out to be what they first appear, to the alleyways bathed in inky shadows, ramshackle apartments and half-lit street corners they inhabit. How can you not get drawn in by the sheer delight of Edward G Robinson playing a second rate psychic trying to convince the authorities he can see the future in The Night Has a Thousand Eyes? Or amnesiac John Hodiak on a mission to discover his own identity, in the process getting embroiled in a 3-year-old murder case and the search for a missing $2 million in Somewhere in the Night? Yes, indeed, there's nothing quite like a hearty serving of...

It looks like Sean Penn is getting on with life after his breakup with ex Charlize Theron. Just days after news of their split broke, the 54-year-old actor was spotted out in L.A. for the first time yesterday. The Oscar winner was photographed spending Father's Day with daughter Dylan Penn on Sunday. Sean went calm and casual in jeans, a navy shirt and a jacket during the family outing. Meanwhile, his gorgeous 24-year-old model daughter sported jeans, sneakers and a blue hoodie with sunglasses on. The father-daughter duo chatted and strolled along Ocean Park before grabbing dinner at a local restaurant in Santa Monica. E! News confirmed last week that Sean and Charlize had split after about a year and a...

Red Band Society executive producer Rina Mimoun has a vision. A decade or two from now, she hopes that the audience who tuned into her short-lived Fox series about the residents and workers of a hospital pediatric ward will remember it with the same fondness she holds for a one-season wonder from her own youth: Claire Danes’ seminal 1994 drama My So-Called Life.

House was a ratings success for Fox for years but the network hasn't had a hit medical series since then. Will Red Band Society break that trend and be renewed for a second season? Will it be cancelled? Stay tuned.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- typically the following morning, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest. (more…)...

Poor Fox, the series Red Band Society has not been saved by anyone. Thus the network has planned the series finale. The last 3 episodes of the series will air on Saturdays, a sign of just how bad they believe the ratings to be. The series will air their finale between two Saturdays (starting iwth, with the second one airing the last two episodes of the drama. It is also hinted that we can expect a character to die. Showrunner Rina Mimoun had the following to say about the show back then when the end was announced.
There’s closure for a lot of the current teen storylines that you’ve been watching, but the [final] episode also shows you how the series itself is open-ended. Octavia Spencer is the lead of this show. She’s the heart and soul of Ocean Park Hospital, and it shows you that certain Red Bander...

To little surprise, it looks like Fox is pulling the plug on Red Band Society. The Wednesday night drama will be dropped from the schedule in December and production will be shut down after the initial 13 episodes have been completed.

Don't be fooled by basic premise: Fox's Red Band Society isn't your typical teen drama, nor is it your typical medical show. Hailing from writer and executive producer Margaret Nagle and executive producer Steven Spielberg, Red Band Society stars The Help's Oscar winner Octavia Spencer as Nurse Jackson—sometimes referred to as "Scary Bitch"—and Brothers and Sisters veteran Dave Annable as Dr. Jack McAndrew, the two "authority figures" in Ocean Park Hospital. Mandy Moore has landed a major recurring guest role on Fox’s new hour-long drama Red Band Society.
Mandy Moore Joins Red Band Society
Moore, known for both her singing and acting skills, will play Ocean Park Hospital’s chief of staff Erin Grace. Erin, incidentally, also happens to be the ex fiancé of Dr. McAndrews (Dave Annable).
"We're branching out to tell a soap on top of the patients with the hospital staff and we're adding new people," executive producer Rina Mimoun told The Hollywood Reporter. "We focus on patients, but we're building out the adult storylines so we're following their stories as well."
Red Band Society currently stars Annable and Octavia Spencer as a sharp-tongued nurse with a soft heart. Both of the workers at Ocean Park Hospital treat a group of sick teenagers that call the hospital their home. The show focuses on the unlikley friendships between the ailing patients,...

Fox is taking a risk with a unique teen based show, Red Band Society. The show will follow a group of teen who live at the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital. It will follow their laughter and struggles, along with the staff who work with the kids. The show will certainly hold laughter and tears, but should hit all of the right notes for everyone. You can check out the trailer for the series that premiers this fall down below. Here is the official description for the series.
What if a hospital was your high school, boarding school and summer camp rolled into one? What if it was the place where you fell in love for the first time and made friendships that lasted a lifetime? And what if it was all weirdly hilarious and the most fun you ever had in your entire life? This is the world of Red Band Society.

var brightcovevideoid = '3113893620001'; You know what they say: When it rains - or, likewise, when a Beluga whale sprays water at you - it pours. This little guy learned that the hard way - not once, but twice - when he visited China's Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park in the country's Zhejiang province. There, the youngster encountered the overzealous (or, perhaps, delightfully sassy) mammal. It was not very kind. (Watch above.) The real take-away here: Sometimes, life throws things your way, and it's not always pleasant. More importantly, there are plenty of whales in the sea, or at least at the aquarium.

Maureen O'Sullivan (Jane), Cheeta, Johnny Weismuller (Tarzan): MGM in the '30s Cheeta, Tarzan's chimp in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) and Tarzan and His Mate (1934), died of kidney failure during the week of December 19 according to Florida's Suncoast Primate Sanctuary. Sad news — and curious news as well. The Associated Press reports that chimps in captivity live between 40 and 60 years. Cheeta, oftentimes spelled as Cheetah, would have been 80. Also, more than one chimp played Cheeta in the various Tarzan movies. One of those, known as either Jiggs or Mr. Jiggs, is supposed to have died of pneumonia at a very young age in 1938, the year he co-starred with Dorothy Lamour in Her Jungle Love. (Actually, Ray Milland, not Jiggs, was Lamour's paramour in that movie.) And finally, according to Suncoast's outreach director Debbie Cobb, MGM's Tarzan Johnny Weismuller donated Cheeta to the sanctuary back in 1960. But did olympic swimmer Weismuller...

Karl Rove is accusing President Obama of breaking the law on Libya and Medicare. But as Newsweek/Daily Beast columnist Stephen L. Carter explains, both laws in question are unconstitutional-and the president can and should refuse to comply.
Is President Obama breaking the law? In an essay in The Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove claims that he is. Rove, the former top political adviser to President George W. Bush, actually accuses Obama of violating two statutes: the War Powers Resolution and an obscure provision of the 2003 law that added Medicare Part D, the prescription drug program.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Should We Hit Gaddafi Next?
The War Powers Resolution argument has been fully ventilated, and although it is perfectly obvious that the Libya operation is not in compliance, I have long been numbered among those who consider the statute an unconstitutional interference with the command authority constitutionally vested in the president.

Why are states allowed to be in the gambling business and lock out the private sector? Stephen L. Carter on why state-run lotteries are bad for taxpayers, the poor, casinos, and bettors.
In case you missed it, the shares of European companies that offer on-line gambling have risen sharply in response to the crackdown by the Justice Department on sites that offer games of chance in the United States. This market reaction is of course entirely predictable. Capital flows to where it will find the highest returns, and online betting is only one of many fields in which America is being out-competed by the world.

As Gaddafi teeters Libya, Obama still has no clear policy on the rising tide of democracy across the Middle East. What he needs, says Stephen L. Carter, is a clear doctrine to guide his administration and show the protesters he is with them.
Suppose Gaddafi falls tomorrow. Despite Tuesday's fiery speech, he plainly is on the way out. When you are reduced to machine-gunning your people en masse, and your own diplomats turn against you, the handwriting is on the proverbial wall. Yes, there was a time not so long ago when vicious regimes could slaughter their people as they liked, and get away with it-one need only remember Tiananmen Square in 1989, or Prague in 1968-but that was before every cell phone could stream video around the world in seconds. A dictatorship that cannot control communications is bound to crumble.

Santa Monica – While Los Angeles is a city that seems to inspire either love or hate in visitors, Santa Monica appears to hit the right note with just about everyone, thanks to its laid-back, beach-town vibe and the respite it offers from big-city life. Jet Li finally appears to be making good on his promise to retire from martial arts filmmaking with this small-scale tearjerker that is notably devoid of anything approaching action. Li plays Wang, a maintenance man at an Ocean Park-style water theme park, who lives with his 20-year-old son, David (Wen Zhang). David suffers from autism and is unable to function independently in the outside world. He is a competent swimmer and regularly joins Wang at work, where he is allowed to play in the large aquariums with the dolphins, turtles and other tropical fish. However, when Wang discovers he has terminal cancer and only a matter of months left to live, he must help David assimilate into normal society, or risk him being incarcerated in a hellish mental asylum.
