Exclusive: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 luscious pop classic movie starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent, has recouped its costs — not only the $28 million Broadway price tag, but it also recouped sizable sums in London’s West End and Australia.
Luhrmann tells me that it’s “so gratifying that breaking even is such a big deal in the theater.”
As an antipodean, he’s especially gratified with Moulin Rouge!’s hit status in Australia.
“Australia, the English one, the Broadway one — they’ve all done it,” and “that’s down to the relentless drive that Carmen and her team in Australia, New York and London had to fulfill the dictum that the show must go on,” he says with brio in referring to Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Sydney-based Global Creatures, the principal production company behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
“Check with Carmen,” Luhrmann suggests.

This article contains 65 spoilers.
65 is a movie about aliens crash landing on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs. Except that the aliens look an awful lot like they come from Earth, and the dinosaurs… don’t.
The dinosaurs presented in writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ film might have some recognizable body parts, and some may even bear a passing resemblance to a few of the bigger names from the My First Dinosaur book you had as a kid, but for the most part, the giant killer reptiles we see in that movie are monsters, nothing more, and nothing less. At one point there is a baby dinosaur that looks like a cross between a T-Rex and an Ankylosaurus, a species so far unknown outside of one episode of the Lego Jurassic World animated series. And while the fossil record is incomplete, and there may have existed many species...

The creator of the critically acclaimed BBC natural history series Walking with Dinosaurs has landed a new eight-part docuseries at NBC.
The broadcast network has ordered Surviving Earth that explores the bizarre and amazing creatures and breathtaking landscapes of a vibrant lost world.
The series is a co-production between Loud Minds, the UK production company founded by Walking with Dinosaurs creator Tim Haines, and Universal Television Alternative Studio.
It marks another interesting move in the world of high-end factual programming; the U.S. broadcast networks have generally shied away from big docuseries or natural history programming, leaving the genre to the likes of Discovery Channel and PBS, or more recently streamers such as Netflix and Apple.
However, it comes after NBC ordered ten-part documentary series from the BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the division behind Planet Earth and Blue Planet. The, as-yet-untitled series, which will explore the landscapes, creatures and wilderness of North,...

65 million years ago, dinosaurs ruled the Earth as the dominant form of life on this planet. Unless you're a weirdo like myself and obsessively watched all those BBC "Walking with Dinosaurs" specials from back in the day, the somewhat less-than-realistic "Dinosaur" movie from 2000, or "The Land Before Time" animated movies/shows, or the recent Apple TV+ series "Prehistoric Planet," that's likely a version of the world most audiences haven't seen depicted on the screen. It seemed as if that would change in a big way with "Jurassic World Dominion," however, when Universal Pictures released an extended clip of a standalone "prologue" sequence that showed dinosaurs...

Jurassic World introduced us all to the Indominus Rex, the franchise’s first genetically modified hybrid dinosaur. A bunch of scientists, including B.D. Wong’s Dr. Henry Wu, took DNA from a bunch of different dinos and merged them together to create Mother Nature’s angry accident baby. As such, she’s a fearsome foe, but the coolest part about Indominus is that her look is based on an actual dinosaur. Jack Horner, a paleontologist and a scientific advisor on Jurassic World, spoke to Yahoo Movies about the creation of Indominus Rex and it all leads back to the Therizinosaurus. He said: I started the process with a dinosaur called Therizinosaurus that has big grasping arms. That was the most important thing — the grasping arms and its color. It’s white. BBC aired a special event called Walking With Dinosaurs: Inside Their ...

There simply aren’t enough dinosaur movies. Even with Jurassic World in theaters right now (and Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur just a few months away), I still feel like we’re owed at least three or four more by next week. Like there’s some gnawing hole in the world that won’t be satisfied until the coolness factor of your average dinosaur (extremely high) matches with the amount of enthusiasm Hollywood has for crafting high-quality dinosaur films (middling at best). It hurts. And if you’re a fan of really big extinct lizards, you’re probably hurting too (especially given the state of the last few dinosaur flicks to hit theaters — Land of the Lost, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Walking With Dinosaurs: The 3D Movie. Come on, people). So let’s do a little walkthrough of dinosaur movie history, with two goals in mind: 1. Figure out why those who love dinosaur...

London, England. Something horrible has happened on TV Stage 2 at London's Pinewood Studios. Trails of sticky blood lead to and from the stage. Lurid, red fingerprints spot the doors. On the actual stage itself, the source of the carnage evident. A tyrannosaurus rex rests prone on a shiny metal platform, chest open. A sluice tray holds a stomach, curling innards and still more blood. A pair of drenched white rubber boots sits gory and ensanguinated, vacated by their owner. Science! *** *** When a network known for fact-based programming ventures into the realm of the speculative, the slope is a slippery one. It will be years before Animal Planet and Discovery Channel recover from "Mermaids: The Body Found" and it will also probably be years before the competition stops twisting that particular knife. However, several other BBC titles will be disappearing Feb 1. According to Variety, bid a sad toodle-doo to "Fawlty Towers," "Blackadder" and "Mi:5." (Don't worry, "Sherlock" isn't due to expire anytime soon.)
As for movies, the clock is ticking on "Zodiac," "Batman Returns," "Apocalypse Now," and "Mad Max," which will also be pulled in the monthly purge.
Here's the complete list of titles that will vanish from your streaming list (pending any sort of meddling time-travelers):

Elle Fanning, Chloe Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld and Peter Beale from EastEnders are all on the X-Men: Apocalypse shortlist, it seems
Bryan Singer is homing in on new additions to the X-Men cast for his upcoming movie, X-Men: Apocalypse. The film will centre on the X-Men: First Class cast (and pick things up after X-Men: Days Of Future Past), but it'll also be introducing younger versions of characters we've already seen in previous X-Men adventures. As such, the search is on for acting talent to play the young versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey.
So who's on the short list?
For Jean Grey, The Wrap is reporting that Elle Fanning (last seen in Maleficent), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) are on the shortlist. Meanwhile, the younger Cyclops could be taking the form of Ben Hardy (Peter Beale in EastEnders, no less), Charlie Rowe (Walking With Dinosaurs) and...

A handful of Londoners got the fright of their lives this week, when they spotted a shark's fin carving through the water in the heart of Finsbury Park.
The "Fins-bury Shark" elicited screams from rowers on the North London lake, until they noticed a sticker attached to its distinctive dorsal fin.
The 'shark' was in fact a polystyrene prop created by BAFTA award-winning art director and special effects designer Jamie Campbell (Walking with Dinosaurs).
Its appearance was part of a stunt by the Discovery Channel to promote the launch of its worldwide Shark Week.
The annual run of nature programmes celebrates the predators of the deep, and this year begins on Sunday, August 10.
The series of special shows spans five days, concluding on Saturday, August 16.
A spokesman for Discovery Channel said: "All of the boaters saw the funny side and we can assure everyone that it is perfectly safe to go back in the water!

The disappointing performance of movies including The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, Walking With Dinosaurs, Runner Runner, and The Counselor still weighs on investors when they look at 21st Century Fox. But while Co-coo James Murdoch acknowledges that ”last year we didn’t have a great run” in theatrical films, he told the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference this morning that ”over time the film segment is very attractive” — and promised an “exciting next couple of years” with “a lot of attractive film product coming through…. We’re super excited about the future.” The studio has “very high hopes” for The Fault In Our Stars, which he described as “a lower cost drama.” Murdoch also talked up planned sequels for The Planet Of The Apes and Avatar, as well as recent successes with Rio 2, The Other Woman, Grand Budapest Hotel, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past. “You have...

ITV is close to commissioning two new 13-episode drama series.
Kevin Lygo's ITV Studios is currently developing adaptations of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Beowulf, reports The Sunday Telegraph.
Walking with Dinosaurs producer Tim Haines is working on Beowulf, while Jekyll and Hyde will be written by Charlie Higson.
Lygo explained that he is currently looking for co-production deals for both shows to secure international distribution.
Although shows of this genre traditionally air on Saturday evenings, it is currently unclear where Jekyll and Hyde and Beowulf would fit into ITV's schedule.
Earlier this month, ITV confirmed that its new pay channel ITV Encore will launch on June 9. The channel will be dedicated to the broadcaster's best drama output.

★★☆☆☆Branded after the hugely successful six-part BBC documentary series which aired back in the late 1990s, Walking with Dinosaurs - The Movie (2013) is a live action/CGI hybrid from co-directors Neil Nightingale and Barry Cook, and is released this week on DVD and Blu-ray. It's without doubt technically impressive, featuring some of the most visually lifelike dinosaurs since Jurassic Park (1993). And yet it's botched spectacularly by a paper-thin script and some laughably silly voiceover work from actors as Justin Long and John Leguizamo (of Ice Age fame). We follow the story of the adorably named Patchi (Long), born at the end of the Cretaceous period as the runt of a Pachyrhinosaurus litter.

Persona (Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray/DVD) I have watched all of Criterion's new Blu-ray for Ingmar Bergman's absolute classic, Persona, and will have a more in-depth look at the film tomorrow, but for now let me just say I consider this an essential title for film fans interested in collecting the best cinema has had to offer over the course of its rich history. I only saw Persona for the first time a little over three years ago and was absolutely floored. It's one of those films you don't need to "get" to understand, which I know is confusing. Put, hopefully, more simply, this is a film that's meant to confuse and confound, but it does it in such a way that you never feel you're missing something. Yet, by the end you'll be left enthralled by the images you've witnessed, the story (or lack thereof) you've witnessed, the performances,...

While exploring near the town of Drumheller in Alberta (often referred to as "Dinosaur Capital of the World" for its wealth of fossil treasures), paleontologist Darla Zelenitsky and her team came upon a nearly intact skull from one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. Photo: University of Calgary According to CNN, the 70-million-year-old skull, measuring nearly eight feet long, is one of the most well-preserved skeletal specimens (nearly 80% intact) of an adult Pachyrhinosaurus – one of three similar species, first catalogued in the 1950s. The big-headed herbivore recently got a big boost in popularity after its appearance in last year's big-screen release Walking with Dinosaurs. Photo: 20th Century Fox “It almost looks like some sort of mythical beast," said Zelenitsky, an associate professor of Geoscience at the University of Calgary, in a statement to the press. "Because it is so big... it makes for a very strange-looking individual." She went on...

As fall of this year draws closer, Disney is going to be giving little insights into the world of their show Star Wars Rebels. THR released an exclusive image of one of the main characters of the show. Her name is Sabine.
She will be voiced by Tiya Sircar (Walking with Dinosaurs, The Internship), and this is what the report had to say about the character:
She is a Mandalorian, and is described as "sassy," "spunky," "feisty" and has "a little bit of attitude." She has an expert's knowledge of weapons and arms, with an affinity for blowing things up. "She does it with flair," Sircar says of Sabine, who also moonlights as a graffiti artist.

There are a lot of moving parts in Fox‘s fiscal Q2 report out this morning with the inclusion of Sky Deutschland revenue and a gain on the sale of an ownership stake in Phoenix Satellite Television. But for the most part it looks pretty much as expected, and blah, as the company lowered its cash flow guidance for the current fiscal year. Net income for the last three months of 2013 was cut in half to $1.2B on revenues of $8.2B, +14.9%. That revenue number beat the $7.9B that analysts expected. Adjusted earnings, at 33 cents a share, matched the Street’s consensus forecast. Fox pulls out the old “difficult comparisons” explanation for the profit decline in Filmed Entertainment, where cash flow fell 11% to $218M on revenues of $2.5B, +6.6%. Fox says that it had higher release costs this year for The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty and Walking With Dinosaurs, and couldn...
