To paraphrase an old adage, there’s bound to be a silver lining in every cloud. Indeed, for some Caribbean island locations, the Covid-19 pandemic, despite some losses in human life, has been a blessing for their audiovisual industries. The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, two of the most generous locations in terms of film incentives, are expecting a record boom.
“The number and size of projects coming to the country have increased exponentially,” says Albert Martinez, COO of Lantica Media, which operates the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios. “By opening up earlier than other locations, many projects gravitated to us.”
Among the first major productions to film in the Dominican Republic, and which made full use of Pinewood Dr, was “Old,” M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller starring Gael Garcia Bernal.
The Dominican Republic’s film commission projects a total foreign production spend of around $176 million by year-end, up from $35 million last year.

In “Strip Down, Rise Up,” an attendee of S Factor’s beginning pole dance course admits to her fellow students that the class is nothing like what she thought it would be. “When I showed up, I wasn’t scared,” the woman tells those gathered in a circle. “Now I’m a little scared.” In her welcoming remarks, S Factor founder Sheila Kelley promised that might happen. Whether Amber, the pert, fit newbie, will stick with the L.A. studio’s six-month course remains to be seen.
She’s right, though. The class at the heart of “Strip Down, Rise Up,” upends expectations. So does director-producer Michèle Ohayon’s cinema verité movie. Debuting on Netflix, the doc is poignant, surprising and deftly reawakens questions about “patriarchy” — not by being a pole-dancing polemic but by foregrounding its characters’ experiences.
The strip club and its pole have become a de rigueur gesture in U.

I love heist movies, and over the past few years there have been some great indie-comedy heist movies: films like Flypaper, How to Rob a Bank, The Maiden Heist and Blue Iguana. What do they have in common? Well they all successfully balance quirky, offbeat comedy with traditional “heist-film” storytelling. They also all feature a cool and charismatic cast. None of which applies to The Devil’s Heist… well this is partly a comedy; insomuch as its absolutely hilarious anyone would pay to distribute this pile of dross!
The film tells the story of Ted, an ex-con who – along with his old partner and his girlfriend – rob a bank. But not just any bank.

A kooky, disposable caper that’s light on charm and heavy on nonsense, Hadi Hajaig’s “Blue Iguana” was conceived as a throwback to the golden age of VHS crime-comedies — as the kind of freewheeling late-80s’ fare in which anything could happen because everything turned a profit on home video. And maybe, if you squint really hard, you can see the faintest shades of films like “Something Wild” or “Miami Blues” mixed into this manic parade of dumb criminals and even dumber plotting. Alas, anybody who watches Hajaig’s movie that closely will be more transfixed by the enormous gap between what the writer-director was going for and what he ultimately got.

Directed by Michael Radford, Dancing at the Blue Iguana tells the stories of five women who work as pole dancers at the ‘Blue Iguana’ club in Los Angeles. Played by Daryl Hannah, Jennifer Tilly, Sheila Kelley, Charlotte Ayanna and Sandra Oh, the women all have complex, issue-ridden lives beyond their status as exotic dancers. The two-hour long film was developed from a series of improvisation workshops and it is the reliance on improvisation, rather than a strong script and firm sense of direction, that is the crux of the problems with this film.
The use of improvisation is not new, with the British director Mike Leigh as perhaps the best known for its use. Leigh’s use of improvisation, however, works because he uses it sparingly and at the rehearsal stage in order to allow his cast to develop their characters. Leigh says, “That last scene in Secrets and Lies,...

Glenn from Stale Popcorn here to throw in two cents worth of discussion about the year 2001 per Nathaniel's request.
Last week for the year 2000 I discussed a favourite from that year that I felt had been criminally underrated. At least a lot of people have seen that movie for it to be underrated. The 2001 film that I want to shine a light on has been seen by about three people (and a goat).
If you had to ask me what profession has gotten the worst representation in the history of cinema I would probably point to stripping. Oh sure, we all love Showgirls but when paired up with Demi Moore's Striptease, the profession has never quite been the same. Throw in the absurd I Know Who Killed Me starring the ghost of Lindsay Lohan's career, the "all star" Spun and even the dead-boring (if you can believe it...

Daryl Hannah has won damages over false stories that appeared in Britain's The Mirror newspaper. The paper wrongly alleged she flew to Los Angeles for her dog's birthday, when she should have rehearsing for her London stage role in The Seven Year Itch. Her lawyer Simon Smith told a judge in the High Court in London that the "false and very embarrassing" allegations appeared in an article in The Mirror last October entitled Jittery Daryl Goes Walkies. He says the article reported that Hannah had unaccountably flown to Los Angeles when she should have been attending last-minute rehearsals "and that she did this contrary to the wishes of the play's producers, who became 'panicked' at her absence". Mr Smith adds, "It was reported that she then returned to the theatre in London four days later and, when further questioned about the 'urgent business' she had attended to in Los Angeles, claimed that she had been obliged to return home because it was her dog's birthday." The truth was, he says, that a month before the play's opening Hannah travelled to Toronto, Canada with the play's director, Michael Radford, to promote the film, Dancing At The Blue Iguana, in which they had both been involved. The actress has accepted an undisclosed sum.
