Global Screen, the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam. The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.
“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.
Despite Atshumao’s warning, the group attempts a shortcut through the unforgiving landscape, unaware that this will lead them to cross paths with two ancestral spirits – who will settle a centuries-old dispute by betting on the family’s lives. The group of travelers is soon plagued by misfortune, tragedy, thirst,...

Christoph Waltz is calling out the “posthumous sanctification” of late legendary actor Marlon Brando.
According to Waltz, the revelry around Brando’s legacy is “annoying,” to not mince words.
“Now it’s Brando’s 100th birthday. I read two articles and I found them both really annoying, and this posthumous sanctification […] to make him […] a mythology,” Waltz told Interview magazine while in conversation with Caleb Landry Jones. “And it’s ridiculous, because he was a ham.”
Waltz added of Brando, “In the beginning he was fantastic. No one had ever seen anything like it.”
However, Waltz also called Brando’s performance in “The Missouri Breaks” “difficult to watch.” He added that Brando’s reputation of being “difficult” on sets, or accusations of inappropriate conduct on the set of “The Last Tango in Paris,” did not affect his perspective on Brando’s acting ability.

On what would be his 100th birthday, Marlon Brando remains synonymous not with acting, but great acting — even if this ranked list of all his performances represents what may be the most wildly uneven filmography for any talent of his caliber. But that’s the power of Brando: A handful of his performances are so great and influential they shook up the art of acting forever. Even among his lesser performances, there’s compelling work deserving of rediscovery.
In order to best exemplify what made him such a singular onscreen presence, we ranked all 39 of his films (and one TV appearance), reflecting a spectrum as wide as the man’s broad shoulders. Based on the quality of Brando’s performances rather than the overall films themselves, there are some placements that may surprise you; for example, as great as Brando is in “The Godfather,” it’s still just the fourth-best...

Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar has joined the cast of Shane Black’s next film, Play Dirty. She’ll appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Lakeith Stansfield.
After years in development, Shane Black’s thriller Play Dirty appears to be gathering pace. It was only the other day that Lakeith Stansfield was announced as a co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg; it’s now reported that he’ll be joined by Rosa Salazar, whose previous roles include the zesty anime adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel.
Deadline, the outlet that broke the story, doesn’t disclose what role Salazar will be playing in Black’s thriller, which is based on the long-running – and influential – series of novels written by Donald E Westlake.
It’s previously been reported that Play Dirty will draw on several of those novels rather than one in particular, though judging by Deadline’s synopsis, it’ll take at least a...

Brian Cox says Succession creator Jesse Armstrong was a “gentleman” to salute him during his acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards.
The celebrated HBO drama won the top drama prize, and Armstrong praised the show’s cast, creatives and crew then lauded Cox, “who the show was revolved around whether he was in it or not.”
Later at the HBO | Max Emmy afterparty at San Vicente Bungalows, Cox tells me he was “touched” by Armstrong singling him out. “Jesse’s a gentleman in an industry where there aren’t many of those,” he says.
Cox adds that the entire team deserved the praise. ”All of them. The drama series win belongs to each and every one of them.”
The acclaimed actor says he knew Succession would become a “cultural landmark” from the time he read Armstrong’s first script. “I was in no doubt that it would become a benchmark.

ESPN has launched a sports betting initiative in 17 states in an attempt to contend with other sports betting services like and its $9 billion U.S. online sports betting monopoly. The sports network, backed by Disney, made a deal earlier in August with Penn Entertainment for a $2 billion deal that rebrands its gambling company Barstool Sportsbook. Existing Barstool accounts will transfer to ESPN Bet. Penn bought Barstool in February from Barstool Sports founder David Portnoy, and the technology behind ESPN Bet comes mostly from Penn’s $2 billion 2021 acquisition of Canadian gaming app theScore, according to the Financial Times. Barstool operates over 40 casinos nationwide, such as the Tropicana and M Resort in Las Vegas, and intends to invest $150 million a year into marketing ESPN Bet. Due to varying gambling laws nationwide, ESPN Bet permits wagers only when users are physically present in a state where the app is licensed for sports betting.

Brian Cox became a familiar face all over the world thanks to playing Logan Roy in the hit HBO series “Succession,” but there have been some consequences. The actor is a veteran with some 240 credits to his name, but it is “Succession” that made him a household name.
“I’ve lost my anonymity and I’ve realized that that was what was important to me. I haven’t ever experienced anything like this,” Cox told The Guardian. “I mean, you ask for success in your work, and you get it, and then you have to deal with the consequences. I’ve always valued my privacy, but that’s gone. I’ve been very lucky that I’ve had it for so long. You know, I’ve been doing this for over 60 years. And finally it’s over.”
Cox also turned down roles in “Game of Thrones” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

Hip-hop found me before I even knew what it was. I was about 4 years old when I first heard Lauryn Hill spitting rhymes on The Fugees's "The Score" and "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." Although I was too young then to understand the meaning behind her raps, I knew Hill's lyrics were unlike anything I'd ever heard from a woman. They were strong, confident, honest. My young, curious mind wanted to hear more.
In the following years, I discovered more femcees like Lil' Kim, Missy Elliott, and Queen Latifah, who rapped unapologetically about their power - whether they were embracing their sexual prowess through "pussy rap," bragging about being "super duper fly," or demanding respect and "U.N.I.T.Y." Their bold and brave efforts showed me all the ways women could take up space in hip-hop, even amid rampant sexism and misogyny. In my eyes, they were hip-hop queens who fought valiantly...

Lauryn Hill and The Fugees may have canceled their highly anticipated reunion tour last year, but that didn't stop the former group members from hitting the stage together at the 2023 Roots Picnic this weekend. Hill, who served as the festival's June 3 headliner, surprised audience members that evening when she brought out her bandmates for a brief performance of some of their greatest hits.
Per Variety, the trio - made up of Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michél - treated the Roots Picnic crowd to rhythms and rhymes from their 1996 Grammy-winning sophomore album, "The Score," starting with the title track plus other songs like "How Many Mics," "Zealots," "Ready or Not," and "Killing Me Softly With His Song." They ended their six-song set-within-a-set with a grand finale of "Fu-Gee-La."

Grian Chatten, lead singer of the Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C., has announced the release of his debut solo album Chaos for the Fly, due out June 30th on Partisan Records. Chatten also shared “Fairlies,” which you can listen to below.
The announcement comes just one week after Chatten released his plucky, acoustic-driven debut single “The Score.” Meanwhile, “Fairlies” gives off Conor Oberst-type energy — vocally subdued and monotone, and instrumentally going back and forth between strongly struck chords, and accented sweeps of violin and tambourines. Watch the music video, animated by Callum Scott-Dyson, below.
According to a press release for the debut, Chatten said he wrote the track in the midst of “intense heat” in Spain and LA before the band went on tour. “It was a quick write, and I believe I celebrated each line with a beer,” he joked.
Chatten will be hitting the road with the rest of Fontaines D.

Fontaines D.C. vocalist Grian Chatten is going solo. The Irish musician has shared “The Score,” his debut single under his own name.
If you’re expecting more of the type of twisted post-punk that Fontaines D.C. showed on their 2022 album Skinty Fia, “The Score” will likely disappoint you. But the song is transfixing in its own right, as Grian Chatten sheds his more menacing vocals in favor of a subtler, but equally evocative murmur.
Over fingerpicked acoustic guitar, Chatten appears to explain to a love interset why they should leave their current partner: “You know the score/ It ain’t limited to your knowing looks and touches anymore,” he sings, as the folksy tune incorporates a tinny beat towards the latter half. “You see your heart’s been tethered/ To a sinking stone.”
“‘The Score’ is a heavyweight bated breath of lust,” Chatten says in a press release.

We hear a lot of stories about method actors going so far with their process that they become a total pain on set, ranging from Dustin Hoffman on "Marathon Man" to Jared Leto on "Morbius" and "Suicide Squad." Of course, there are plenty of method actors who aren't an irritant or a menace on set. Most of them are like that. We just don't hear about them because the stories aren't as weird as sending a rat to your co-star.
But then you have the grandaddy of them all, the man responsible for changing what film acting is: Marlon Brando. For as dynamic and groundbreaking an actor as he was, few actors have garnered as big of a reputation as him for being a really unpleasant co-worker. You have the truly horrific stuff that occurred on set for "Last Tango in Paris," but you also have things like not wanting...

If you’ve lurked on the internet in recent months, you might’ve noticed Celine Dion’s name more often than usual. First was the singer’s saddening news about an illness she’s been facing. Second was the discourse around Rolling Stone’s Greatest Vocalists of All Time list, which weirdly omitted Dion. Dion’s exclusion left many angry at the publication, especially given how storied her career has been. Throughout the decades, she has cemented herself as one of the biggest voices of her generation and has earned countless accolades. Warner Bros. Discovery will be releasing “Mickey 17,” an original sci-fi melodrama from Bong Joon Ho, on March 29, 2024.
The next feature from the filmmaker of “Parasite,” which became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020, stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo. It is produced by Dooho Choi, Boon Joon Ho, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner.
While no official logline has been offered, the film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7,” which concerns n expendable — and employee on a human expedition sent to colonize an ice world. After one version dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. The brief teaser offered below by Warner Bros. sees Robert Pattinson as, presumably, Mickey7 or Mickey19 being brought back/rebuilt/etc. after a fatal calamity. Watch a teaser for the film at the top of this post.

Danny DeVito's 2002 dark comedy "Death to Smoochy" is an odd animal indeed. Caustic, misanthropic, and surreal, "Death to Smoochy" came at the tail end of the peculiar wave of cultural hatred directed at Barney the purple dinosaur.
"Death to Smoochy" takes place in a world where children's entertainment hosts are the most watched and venerated position one can hold. The once-successful Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams) recently lost his venerated position as the genre's unchallenged king after accepting bribes and for being a crass alcoholic. Positioned to replace him is Sheldon Mopes (Edward Norton), aka Smoochy the Rhino, a seemingly honest man who is full of legitimate wonderment and an earnest need to entertain children. The bulk of the film's comedy stems from Randolph's attempts to sabotage Smoochy's show. Eventually, the mob gets involved.
"Death to Smoochy" was widely hated upon its release, although not for lack of ambition.

Government advice is that cinemas can stay open during official mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II.
The majority of UK-Ireland cinemas will remain open this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, with distributors moving ahead with new releases.
Government ‘formal guidance’ for the period of mourning was sent by the UK Cinema Associationto its members yesterday shortly before the Queen’s death was confirmed. The guidance states there is “no expectation” for businesses – including cinemas – to close unless they wish to.

Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean staged a Fugees reunion at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans on Friday, July 1. Jean surprised fans when he brought out Hill during a piano performance of "Killing Me Softly" to perform four of the Fugees classic songs, as reported by Essence. The crowd went wild as the former bandmates went on to sing "How Many Mics," "Fu-Gee-La," and "Ready or Not."
Hill and Jean's reunion comes after the band, which also includes Pras Michel, canceled their planned 2021 reunion tour due to the pandemic. Ultimately, they played one show in New York City in September 2021 before canceling the rest of the tour. The historic show marked the first time the trio had performed together in 15 years. While they originally hoped to reschedule for 2022, they released a statement in January confirming the reunion tour was officially off.

"What are you doing here, Gloria?" "Waiting for something better to come along..." Gravitas has revealed the official US trailer for a film from the UK titled The Score, which is playing in theaters now and out on VOD next week. This premiered at the 2021 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last year, where it initially grabbed my attention. From the producers of Yesterday, The Score boldly combines real time heist-thriller suspense with offbeat romance and a killer soundtrack; starring and featuring the music of Johnny Flynn, alongside Naomi Ackie and Will Poulter. Two small time crooks, Mike & Troy, are on a mission – the "score" – that they both expect will transform their lives. At a roadside café, as they wait for a rendezvous hand-over, Troy falls in love with the waitress, Gloria, and begins to question his life choices... with a threat of real danger on the way. Also stars Lydia Wilson,...

As Troy (Will Poulter) muses on the car ride out-of-town to meet with “professional criminals” and exchange 20 grand for unspecified goods, “score” is one of those words with multiple meanings. Film score. Settling scores. Scoring on the soccer field. Scoring in bed. While it’s as much a monologue to explain writer-director Malachi Smyth’s decision to title his film The Score as it is the set-up to an as yet-to-arrive punchline during the denouement, the real reason for its existence is to let audiences in on the central dynamic. Where Mike is all business, Troy cannot help himself from living life no matter the stakes, consequences, or his companion’s annoyance.
The reason is simple: Troy is only adding “criminal” to his “amateur” title because his brother Derek forced his hand. Derek is the one who helped Mike secure that cash and Derek’s the one who ended up...

Will Poulter’s acting career so far has undoubtedly been diverse. The British actor stars in everything from Oscar-winners like “The Revenant” to YA Sci-Fi like “The Maze Runner” films, to auteurist fare like Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit.” Up next for Poulter? A musical crime drama, “The Score,” where Poulter stars alongside Johnny Flynn as a small-time crook whose chance encounter with love makes him question his life choices.

Cymande was an early ‘70s group of Black British musicians who released three albums, split in 1975 and largely faded from view — until years later when, in a now-familiar story, their records began being sampled by hip-hop, house, drum n’ bass and other DJs and producers. The Fugees’ “The Score,” Wu-Tang Clan’s “Problems,” De La Soul’s “Change in Speak,” Epmd’s “U Got Shot” and many others have used elements from their songs.

The film stars Kate Bosworth (“Force of Nature”), Thomas Kretschmann (“The Pianist”), Lucien Laviscount (“Emily in Paris”) and Martin McCann (“The Survivalist”).
