Malou Reymann’s “Unruly” won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at Göteborg on Saturday. At Sek 400 000, the Award’s cash prize is one of the largest prizes in the world.
Jurors Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Sofie Gråbøl, Antonio Lukich and Matti Bye praised the film for telling a “universal story about human spirit against the oppressive system” with “great sensitivity and power.”
“Although it is rooted in the past, it transcends time and borders, and speaks strongly to our time, our minds and hearts,” they stated.
The Danish director – also behind semi-autobiographical “A Perfectly Normal Family” – decided to go all the way to the 1930s in her sophomore feature, unravelling dark secrets about the real-life Sprogø Women’s Home.
“I am very pregnant and very out of breath, and very touched” said Reymann, accepting her award.
“This film is based on an actual place for women who were seen...

Slamdance Film Festival has revealed the winners of its annual Sparky Awards, with “Waiting for the Light to Change” and “Where the Road Leads” taking home the narrative feature grand jury prize and audience award, respectively.
Directed by Linh Tran, narrative feature grand jury prize winner “Waiting for the Light to Change” is an “exceptional act of patience, restraint, courage and authenticity,” according to the jury. “Filmmaker Linh Tran paints a remarkably honest portrait of vulnerability that breaks open the heart of its audience, demanding sincerity and drawing deep reflection of the fractured nature of ourselves and the complex, human spaces between each of us.”
The Agbo Fellowship, which includes a 25,000 scholarship and mentorship from Slamdance alumni Joe and Anthony Russo, was awarded to Tij D’Oyen. He presented his narrative short film, “Lollygag,” during the festival.

Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin stories were a celebration of tolerance, curiosity and the power of imagination. This Easter weekend a new animated Moomin series premieres on Sky One and Sky Kids. The opening episodes begin a series of 13 22-minute episodes.
HeyUGuys attended a preview screening of episodes 1 and 10 and a Q&A with co-creator/director Steve Box, actress Akiya Henry (who voices Snorkmaiden) and Tove Jansson’s niece Sophia Jansson, the creative director of Moomin Characters Ltd.
Many of our readers will have fond memories of Moomintroll, Little My and Snufkin. After a successful crowdfunding campaign helped support its return, Sky and Gutsy Animations are hoping Moominvalley will find a place in your hearts again and enchant a new generation of viewers.

With the Scandinavian market becoming increasingly divided between blockbusters and indies, mid-budget films are left in limbo and struggling to get financial backing.
“The polarization starts at the funding stage,” says Hakon Overas of Norway’s 4½ Fiksjon, the production company behind Hans Petter Moland’s “Out Stealing Horses,” in competition for the Golden Bear in Berlin. “[The Norwegian Film Institute] won’t give money to those films ‘in the middle,’ the ones we used to make.”
Moland’s business partner Turid Oversveen agrees. “We used to focus on quality art films, but today we are forced to include blockbusters and more commercial films or we are out of business.”
For Torleif Hauge, Project Advisor at the Nordisk TV and Film Fund, the investors’ risk-averse attitude is down to consumer behavior: “People still go to the cinema, tickets are selling like never before, but more money is going to blockbusters because that’s what people go to see.

In 2009, animation studio Filmkmompaniet released the first Moomin feature titled Moomin and Midsummer Madness. which was based on a cartoon which was created by novelist and comic strip author Tove Jansson. The first film on the cute creatures was a bit of a disappointment considering it was cut together from footage of the stop-motion television show but that isn’t stopping Filmkmompaniet from continuing with the series, this time in a much bigger way.
There was news late last year that the studio was working on a stop-motion, 3D animated feature based on the Moomins titled Moomin and the Comet Chase and now some more information has surfaced on the project.
The new film will feature the voice talents of Stellan Skarsgård as Moomin Papa, Alexander Skarsgård (of “True Blood” fame) will voice Moomintroll and the fabulous Peter Stormare will be the voice of Snufkin (Moomintroll's best friend). If that’s not awesome enough,...

The director says they'll be collaborating on a 40-minute, 3D musical
Björk and film director Michel Gondry have started collaborating on a film, Gondry has revealed. The pair are devising a "scientific musical", which they plan to screen in museums.
"We have a very ambitious project," Gondry said as part of a panel at SXSW. "A 40-minute IMAX project in 3D." While he offered no further details, at least he was more forthcoming than the first time the project came up. "It's very undefined," he told Entertainment Weekly last month. "It's hard to give more precision.
Gondry and Björk are certainly no strangers to one-another. Music videos for Army of Me and Joga were some of the main ways Gondry broke into filmmaking, and he has directed a total of seven clips for the Icelandic singer. The most recent was 2007's Declare Independence.

It seems only right that children, whose appetites are so often voracious, enjoy devouring stories full of victuals. What sticks in your mind from the food and drink in your childhood reading?
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is released today, the latest adaptation of Lewis Carroll's books. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are packed with descriptions of food: treacle wells, wine that doesn't exist, jam you can have tomorrow but never today (so you never actually get to eat it) and the Bread-and-Butterfly, which lives on nothing but weak tea with cream in. If it can't find any, it will die. ("'But that must happen very often,' Alice remarked thoughtfully. 'It always happens.'")
There's much to learn from food in children's books. Starvation was all too often inevitable in Victorian society, even if your diet wasn't limited to weak tea and cream. Plus...

This is one for fans of Calvin and Hobbes or Studio Ghibli, and if you found Where the Wild Things Are's sweet melancholy too much to resist, then there's a good sprinkling of that feeling to be found here too. The Moomins were the creation of Finnish novelist and comic strip author Tove Jansson and, according to legend, she drew the first one to scare her brother. That cute thing? Scary? Maybe it was one of the Moominland monsters she drew, such as The Groke, the Antlion or the Hattifatteners? As a child I devoured the Moomin books and sat rapt, five days a week, watching the Moomin stop-motion TV series. A more recent series produced by hand-drawn animation was less successful artistically, but perhaps better known internationally. This year the Finnish animation studio Filmkmompaniet completed their first Moomin feature film, Moomin and Midsummer Madness. It was made by...
