An opera which is NOT soap and suds
hmsgroop4 October 2000
The acting of Rastorguyev, Buldakov and Drozdova is superb. Ostrovsky's play is as fresh as if Ostrovsky were our contemporary and the film is very entertaining and done "cum grano salis". The composer's work is also admirable, especially the tunes he wrote for Bessudny and the coachman, "Oy, smekh, oy, grekh" is also brilliant. Rastorguyev and Buldakov form an unforgettable duet. On the whole every character has been embodied on the screen in the best possible way and there is a veritable ensemble of actors in the film. The camera work is also unusual for Russian film-making: the colours are fresh, the frames are "yummy" and the film possesses the brightness of a good ad reel without its effect of annoying the viewer.
