Longtime friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal spent a decade crafting “Blindspotting,” a story of their dynamic and dangerous hometown, Oakland, California. An opening-night competition entry from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the screenwriters’ debut feature, which they star in and produce, now has its first trailer. Dropped Wednesday, the clip demonstrates how the city can treat men from the same class, with the same job, and the same interests as polar opposites — if they happen to have different skin colors. “You monsters got me feeling like a monster in my own town,” chokes Diggs’ character before eliciting a scream.
Well-intentioned Collin has 72 hours left on his probation, but little compassion from Miles (Casal), his reckless pal with gold grillz. For instance, Miles neglects to tell Collin that a chat with an Uber drive is a secret shopping spree for guns. Trouble still finds Collin when he’s alone,...

One of the breakout films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival is the sharp, electric and vital Blindspotting. An impressive blend of stylish comedy and powerful drama makes this a remarkable directorial debut for filmmaker Carlos López Estrada, but it’s the presence of Hamilton star Daveed Diggs giving a breakthrough performance that really drives this […]

Andrew Garfield in "Angels in America"
Oscar fanatics have it easy. Each year roughly 300 movies are eligible for the Oscar race and those same titles (with very few exceptions) are also eligible for all the other movie awards on this continent. They're even (with a few more exceptions) the same slate of movies that are eligible Across the ocean at the other major English language film awards (the BAFTAs). Not so with theater!
Theater awards, a nichier beast altogether, are ultra territorial and when there is crossover it can feel accidental or play out like an echo rather than a harmonic convergence. The Olivier Awards, for example, just honored Lin Manuel Miranda's blockbuster "Hamilton" which the Tony Awards honored two years prior but the only real crossover for this year's Tony Awards is likely to be Angels in America which just transferred here with most of its London cast intact.

The Tony Awards have lined up two past nominees — composer Sara Bareilles and actor Josh Groban — to host the 72nd annual edition of these top theater honors on June 10. The three-hour kudocast will air live on CBS from New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Bareilles lost her 2016 bid for Best Score for “Waitress” to Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Hamilton.” Groban contended last year for his lead role in the tuner “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” but was bested by Ben Platt (“Dear Evan Hansen”).
Bareilles has headlined her Broadway show twice in its run, playing both times to capacity crowds. She recently starred as Mary Magdalene in NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”

In many ways, Clive and Doug Davis are just like any other loving father-son pair: they travel together, celebrate holidays and, since they are both in the music business, collaborate on various industry-related projects such as Clive’s 2013 autobiography “The Soundtrack of My Life” and its companion documentary, “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” for which Doug produced the premiere opening night party at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, a fete that included a screening of the film for 6,000 people and a live concert featuring Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Carly Simon, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
“When I see Sony come up on my cell phone, I don’t know if it’s real business and I should answer or if it’s a sneak attack from my dad,” jokes Doug of their close relationship.

At first blush, some of Marvel Entertainment’s most successful blockbusters and Madison Avenue’s well-known brands might not seem to have much in common. But in the latest episode of the new Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Mindy Hamilton, senior VP of global partnerships and marketing at Marvel, reveals the delicate art of how she pairs consumer products and her studio’s productions to achieve maximum promotional power.
The partnerships Hamilton engineers with blue-chip brands are an increasingly important part of marketing mix that allows content companies like Marvel to reach additional audiences that exceed the grasp of traditional staples like billboards and 30-second spots.
But it’s not as simple as just jamming as many product plugs as you can into a two-hour movie, Hamilton told Variety co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein.

Broadway box office dipped 9% during the week ending April 15, totaling $37,729,078, compared with $41,151,034 in the same week in 2017, according to figures from the Broadway League.
This past week featured 36 shows, compared with 40 in the year-earlier period. In another tough comparison, the 2017 period included Easter and Passover and vacation for New York City area schools, while this year’s week did not.
Carousel and Children of a Lesser God were the week’s major premieres as Tony season continues to pick up speed. The revival of Carousel delivered receipts of $1.054 million for the week, down from $1.190 million in its prior-week previews. Children tallied $230,396, down from $375,274 the week before.
Many of the juggernauts from past weeks, if not years, continued to set the overall pace. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child took in $1.7 million after shattering records for a play debut the week before, at more than $2.1 million. A front-page account of the...

Shortly before “Hair” opened at Broadway’s Biltmore Theater on April 29, 1968 — 50 years ago this month — Variety reported, “The musical is vehemently anti-establishment and pro-dissenting youth.” Before then, most plays, films and TV shows had avoided antiwar protests and the sexual revolution, or mentioned those topics as a way of reasserting middle-class values. Variety reported another radical aspect: The show “includes a scene of total nudity, with several men and femmes facing downstage.” Police raids and arrests were common with nude shows, though “New York City authorities have adopted a hands-off policy re sexually extreme legit fare,” Variety said. While “Hair” was safe in Gotham, it was vulnerable in other cities: In Mexico, the show was shut down after one performance and the cast album was banned in some countries.

The road to movie stardom for Dwayne Johnson is one of the unlikeliest in recent memory. A third-generation professional wrestler known the world over as “The Rock,” Johnson nabbed a supporting role in 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and made such an impression that he starred in a successful stand-alone film, “The Scorpion King,” the very next year.
As his film career progressed, it became evident that, despite his success in action films, Johnson had a distinct flair for comedy, which he began to show off in such films as “Be Cool” (2005), “Central Intelligence” (2016), “Moana” (2016) and in his biggest-grossing film, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017).

Lin-Manuel Miranda is finally going to be in the room where it happens, “it” being the Emmy-nominated DuckTales. The Hamilton creator will make his debut as Gizmoduck (aka Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera) in a new DuckTales episode set for Friday, May 11.
“I’m really excited that a new generation of kids will be growing up with DuckTales,” Miranda said. “As a huge fan of the original series, I love that I can share this new version with my sons.”
The Miranda-voiced Fenton, says the channel, is “Duckburg’s preeminent hero who has Latin roots,” a “brilliant young scientist” that marks a “reimagining” of the character by executive producer Matt Youngberg and co-producer and story editor Francisco Angones.
In Miranda’s debut episode, titled “Beware the B.U.D.D.Y. System!,” Fenton is recruited by Launchpad (voiced by Beck Bennett), who is feeling menaced by tech genius Mark Beaks’ newest invention. See the trailer above.

Leslie Odom Jr. and Katharine McPhee will announce nominations for the 2018 Tony Awards next month.
Odom Jr. won a Tony in 2016 for his performance as Aaron Burr in “Hamilton.” McPhee, a former “American Idol” contestant who turned theatergoers’ heads as one of the leads of NBC’s Broadway-centric series “Smash,” is currently appearing in the lead role of the musical “Waitress.”
“The Band’s Visit,” “Mean Girls” and “Frozen” are among the season’s new musicals eligible for Tony nominations this year, with “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “Junk” and “Farinelli and the King” in the mix for the new play award. Following the accidental omission of UK theater titan Peter Hall from the In Memoriam section of Sunday’s Olivier Awards, event organizer the Society of London Theatre (Solt) has taken action. Not only have they issued a statement apologizing “unreservedly for this serious error,” they have also taken the decision to rename the Olivier Award for Best Director the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director from next year’s ceremony.
Solt, which came in for some strong criticizm following Hall’s omission, said it had taken the decision “in recognition of Sir Peter’s phenomenal contribution to British theatre over many decades, and in close consultation with the Hall family,” who include actress Rebecca Hall.
Solt also said that it was “reviewing the process by which people are included in the In Memoriam segment for future ceremonies” and the body has updated the In Memoriam video, which you can view here.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child set a Broadway record in previews with $2,138,859 gross for the week ending April 8, pacing overall box office for the week as Tony season kicks into gear.
Even with 300 seats at every performance selling for $40 or less, the two-parter at the Lyric Theatre became the top-grossing play in Broadway history. Two years after sweeping the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical “Hamilton” did the same at the British equivalent, the Olivier Awards, on April 8. It won seven of its record 13 bids, including Best Musical. While that haul matched that of another tuner, “Matilda,” it fell two short of the benchmark set last year by the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”
On the play side, the big winner was Jez Butterworth‘s “The Ferryman,” a dark drama about the Irish troubles, which is set to come to Broadway in the fall. It only won three of its eight races but they were biggies: Best Play, Best Director (Sam Mendes) and Best Actress (Laura Donnelly). Bryan Cranston claimed the Best Actor prize for the stage version of the 1976 Oscar-winning film “Network.” Peter Finch had won the Oscar for playing Howard Beale, a TV anchor gone mad.

Last fall, Paramount Pictures revealed that the Terminator franchise would be back in 2019, and while the newest movie in the franchise was initially slated for a July 26th release, it has now been pushed back a few months into November.
According to Variety, the sixth Terminator film (expected to follow the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day) is now scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on November 22nd, 2019, which would bring Skynet back to theaters the weekend before Thanksgiving in the United States.
It was reported in March that Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049, Halt and Catch Fire) is in discussions to join the cast of the new Terminator movie, which is also set to star Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger, likely as a killer T-800 (or other model) robot. Paramount has pushed the sixth “Terminator” movie back three months.
The studio said the move is not related to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s open-heart surgery last week.
The studio made the announcement Friday that it was changing the release date of the untitled movie from July 26, 2019, to Nov. 22, 2019. Paramount said that the date change had been in the works prior to his undergoing the emergency procedure at a Los Angeles hospital.
Schwarzenegger’s spokesman said on March 30 that the 70-year-old actor said “I’m back” on waking up from the procedure and was in good spirits. Schwarzenegger, who served as governor of California from 2003-2011, was attached last year to return to the “Terminator” franchise for the sixth film in the series.
Linda Hamilton will be returning as Sarah Connor, with Schwarzenegger also on board to reprise the role of his iconic cyborg. The sequel will be produced by Skydance and series creator James Cameron.

Interestingly enough, during NBC’s special broadcast of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” (116,217 ERs), the character Judas (portrayed by Brandon Victor Dixon) drove more conversation than Jesus or the star who played him (John Legend). Much of the discussion was positive, with people talking about how good Judas was and how his songs were some of the best of the night — and there were more than a few shoutouts to his costumes.

And now, it turns out, crossword-puzzle author. “Eat It” singer Yankovic co-wrote Wednesday’s edition of the New York Times crossword puzzle, and as you might expect from someone who brought the world songs such as, well, “Eat It,” the resulting work has its share of food puns. The Geffen Playhouse will honor Dick Van Dyke and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its 16th annual “Backstage at the Geffen” fundraiser on May 19.

In the theater industry, “secondary market” used to be dirty words, conjuring images of price-gouging brokers and risky, potentially fraudulent transactions on a street corner. But not anymore.
A new partnership between the ticket reselling giant StubHub and the Roundabout Theater Company, one of the biggest nonprofit theaters in the country — and supported by a broader pact between StubHub and a major software provider for nonprofit performing arts organizations, Tessitura Network — shows just how fast the secondary market’s rep is improving.
In ticketing-jargon terms, the new deal will see StubHub become Roundabout’s premier secondary ticketing partner, with StubHub offering seamless integration and the data insights and consolidated inventory management made possible by its multichannel distribution capabilities. But beyond the nuts and bolts, the pact looks a lot like an endorsement of the secondary market as a valuable way to reach and track customers — and not just a predatory...

Damon J. Gillespie is no stranger to the theater versus football conundrum his character Robbie Thorne faces on “Rise,” NBC’s new drama from Jason Katims.
“I grew up with theater and sports at the same time. So it was very easy to tap into Robbie,” Gillespie says.
The actor who embodies Stanton High’s resident star quarterback-cum-thespian grew up doing musical theater, appearing on Broadway in shows including “Aladdin” and “Newsies.” He even previously portrayed “Spring Awakening’s” Melchior — the role his “Rise” character inhabits in the show-within-the-show — on stage at a local theater in his home state of Tennessee.
“Just jumping into this type of production in general, it’s still a little unreal to me. I’m still like, ‘Okay. This is the good part of the dream, so I’m destined to wake up at any time,'” Gillespie says.

NBC’s live April 1 production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” came with the combined star-wattage of A-list musicians John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene and Alice Cooper as King Herod. But the story on Monday morning might be Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus and stole the show out from under him too.
While Legend, Bareilles and Cooper are best known for their work in recording studios, Dixon is best known for his performances on the stage. He made his Broadway debut as Harpo in the original production of “The Color Purple,” which ran from 2005-2008. He was nominated for his first Tony for that role, Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 2006, though he lost to Christian Hoff for “Jersey Boys.”

NBC’s Easter Sunday production of “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” was, as the young people say, doing the most.
This musical threw together glitter, sequins, leather, writhing hotties, a few big performances pitched to the last row, and camerawork that often felt as though it was hopped up on too many lattes. Actually, the ragged edges of a unifying concept did emerge over the course of the NBC musical’s two-hour-and-20-minute running time: If its philosophy could be summed up in one word, “excess” would just about cover it.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But this live show was a lot.
The musical was intensely earnest, often endearingly so. The entire cast, a multi-cultural tribe who looked as though they just left a loft party at 3 a.m. hungry for more adventure, was as energetically sincere as they could be almost all of the time.

Leave it to Jesus to bring the house down.
John Legend’s big moment in NBC’s broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar Live came in the Act II number “Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say),” in which Jesus wrestles with the reality that his death is close at hand.
“I only want to say/if there is a way/take this cup away from me,” he sang as Jesus starts to doubt whether his cause is worth the suffering ahead. “For I don’t want to taste its poison/feel it burn me/ I have changed/ I’m not as sure as when we started.

At first, the WB & DC logos and the voiceover make it all seem legit. However, after 25 seconds, it cuts to retro footage of the Shazam! TV series from the ’70s set to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.” You have to admit, Sandberg punking us with this fake teaser trailer is funny even though you can feel the excitement of fanboys and fangirls deflating with groans and disappointment

If you were thinking the recent trend of live TV musicals meant you were going to be watching “Hamilton” from the comfort of your own home in the next few years, guess again. Fans of “The Room” and “Hamilton” unite! Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced that he will be adapting Tommy Wiseau’s infamous film for Broadway.
Just kidding.
The songwriter posted a fake announcement of the news to his Twitter account Sunday in honor of April Fool’s Day.
“This is all Very premature,” he wrote, alongside a retweet of a TheaterMania “exclusive announcement” of the gag song listing and official cast. “We’ll try it out of town in San Francisco.”
“Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tommy Wiseau’s The Room: The Broadway Musical” is the title of the production theater critics thankfully won’t have to review. The cast listing includes such titanic figures of Broadway as Patti LuPone in the role of Claudette, Lisa’s mother; Miranda himself and Javier Munoz as Peter/Steven, a psychologist; and Mark Rylance for the notorious Johnny, “an everyman.”
Selected song titles include “Half Canadian Bacon With Pineapple,...

Italian director and actress Asia Argento has fired back after French filmmaker Catherine Breillat gave a scathing interview on the podcast Murmur defending disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein and criticizing the #MeToo and French #BalanceTonPorc ("Denounce your pig") movements, as well as personally attacking Weinstein victims, including Argento.
Argento responded to the helmer of Fat Girl and Bluebeard, calling her out for her collaboration with David Hamilton, the late British fashion photographer who was accused by multiple women of raping them when they were prepubescents. French TV host Flavie Flament in 2016 accused Hamilton of raping her when she was just 13 and he...

Brandon Victor Dixon spent nearly a year on Broadway playing Aaron Burr in the hit musical “Hamilton,” taking over the role from original star Leslie Odom Jr. in 2016. So when he was cast in NBC’s Easter Sunday live TV musical “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Hamilfans everywhere were like “Yas!” But what does Dixon think about taking on yet another iconic “bad guy” — especially since this time he’s straight up charged with betraying Jesus (John Legend)? “I’m very moved by it,” Dixon told TheWrap in a recent interview. “The thing I love about this piece is breaking apart the mythology of these archetypes....
