Transporting a lauded Broadway play to the screen is a mixed bag. Among those that hug the yellow section of Metacritic are “Phantom of the Opera,” “M. Butterfly,” “Evita,” “Nine,” “For Colored Girls,” “The Producers,” “Rent,” “Carnage,” and more. Too often, a script’s theater origins condemn a film adaptation to the curse of being “stagey.” It’s a transition that requires real skill — and Denzel Washington has it.
In his third directorial outing (“The Debaters,” “Antwone Fisher”), Washington skirts the hazards of “opening up” a play by chasing honest emotions. A two-time acting Oscar winner, Washington knocks ’50s Pittsburgh drama “Fences” out of the park, both as director and disgruntled former baseball player Troy Maxson. Viola Davis as Rose Maxson, and Mykelti Williamson as her husband’s brain-damaged brother Gabriel, are also likely supporting Oscar players. Kim Kardashian West took to her newly launched website on Wednesday to post a first-person essay about her experience with Caitlyn Jenner's years-in-the-making transition.
In the essay, the expectant mom opens up about the time she found Jenner (then known as Bruce) dressed up like a woman 13 years ago.
On the two-part Keeping Up with the Kardashians special titled About Bruce that aired in May, Kardashian West had mentioned the incident, which occurred when she was 21. Now 34, the reality star says she kept the secret for more than a decade.

While Miss America hasn’t bred any headline-stealing celebrities recently, beauty pageants were once a place where future stars got their start. Oprah was Miss Black Tennessee; Halle Berry was Miss Ohio. Vanessa Williams made it all the way to the top, nabbing the Miss America title in 1984.

In a somewhat unexpected pairing (at least to me), Oprah Winfrey and Diablo Cody are teaming up for an HBO comedy, which will be based on an upcoming book by Dr. Julie Holland, titled Moody Bitches. HBO’s logline for the show says that it “exposes the truth about the drugs you’re taking, the sex you’re not having, the sleep you’re missing and what’s really making you crazy,” which also happens to be the subtitle of the book by Dr. Holland - a psychiatrist and author of the best-selling autobiography, Weekends at Bellevue: Nine years on the NIght Shift at the Psych ER. Diablo Cody will write the pilot episode adapted from Holland's...

Beverly Hills, Calif. — Nine-year-old Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis toted a plush, dog-shaped purse with jeweled handles as she rubbed shoulders with Oprah Winfrey and Alfre Woodard.
The star of best-picture contender "Beasts of the Southern Wild" was among the honorees Thursday at Essence magazine's sixth annual Black Women in Hollywood awards luncheon.
Standing on a step so she could speak at the podium, Quvenzhane thanked God, "Beasts" director Behn Zeitlin and "my baby sitter that was on set."
Quvenzhane is the youngest best-actress nominee in Oscar history and one of only 10 African-Americans ever recognized in the category.
Winfrey was teary-eyed as she took the stage after being introduced by the graduating class of her namesake Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.
"I am humbled by this day," she said. "There's nothing better than being honored by your own."

You can conclude a lot about the mood of a commercial network by how it stages its upfronts presentation.
My abiding memory of Ten’s event last year was watching them handing out portable televisions from the back of a lorry. In the style of an episode of Oprah, everybody who attended got one as they left.
Watching drunk media types wandering into the darkness of Sydney’s Hickson Road with electrical goods tucked under their arms, the image that popped into my mind was of the looters at the London riots a week before.
This year’s event from Ten was a less over-the-top, slightly more considered breakfast affair.
Meanwhile Seven’s was the over-the-top one this year – complete with indoor fireworks.
Nine had a small event this week around its in-house branded entertainment and integration operation Powered. But its main TV season preview is still a few weeks away.

Australia.s Global Television is part of the joint venture company that has won the host broadcaster gig for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The news was made known on Thursday morning Scottish time at a breakfast event hosted by games organising committee Glasgow 2014, by the First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond and the Glasgow 2014 chair Lord Smith.
The host broadcaster contract is the largest associated with the games, Salmond said during the announcement, and the games are expected to reach an estimated one billion people worldwide.
This is the third time Global Television has covered the Commonwealth Games on behalf of broadcasters around the world but the first time it has formally worked with sports broadcasters Sunset+Vine.
Global Television and Sunset+Vine (Svgtv) will provide multi-camera high definition coverage of 17 sports from 19 venues, plus the opening and closing ceremonies, after designing and setting up a broadcast centre at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Forbes may not consider her the most powerful celebrity on the planet (that honor was recently bestowed to Jennifer Lopez), but whenever Oprah Winfrey does anything, it's definitely a big deal.
And when the billionaire media mogul makes a completely unexpected move--like getting personally involved in a central California election and donating $10,000 to a 21-year old underdog yet to graduate from college--it's guaranteed to upend virtually every corner of said contest.
The race in question is for the seat on Stockton's city council representing the southernmost district of the 300,000-person metropolitan area. The position is currently held by incumbent 52-year old Republican Dale Fritchen, but is being contested by Stanford senior Michael Tubbs.
The Stockton Record reports:
Tubbs said he gained Winfrey's attention in April when she visited Stanford University, where Tubbs will graduate in June. During a luncheon, somebody mentioned to Winfrey that Tubbs is a City Council candidate back at home.

Now that Oprah isn’t at the helm of a daily talk show anymore, she’s busy doing other stuff. Her network, Own, is allegedly tanking, so while she isn’t busy trying to fix that problem (p.s. everyone should be watching Oprah: Behind The Scenes), she has reportedly chosen to take up teaching. In fact, Oprah will teach a class called Life 101 — a course in “the stuff [Oprah] wished someone had told her about how the world really works” — to the 12th grade students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa. We’ve already got a rundown of Oprah’s lessons plan for the curriculum she plans to put into action for her students. We've seen celebrities come out of the closet in memoirs, sitting across from Oprah Winfrey, and on the cover of "People" magazine... but with an announcement on a t-shirt?
"Glee" star Dianna Agron set the social media world abuzz on Saturday night when she wore a t-shirt proclaiming "Likes Girls" for the "Glee" Live Tour's stop in Toronto, On. We're guessing that she wore the t-shirt in support of Glbt rights, not to make a public proclamation about her own sexuality, but we're not surprised that the move has fans talking.
Fans of the TV show will remember a scene in the "Born This Way" episode where each character wore a t-shirt emblazoned with something that makes them feel different from their peers.
On the tour, the cast has been wearing the same shirts to perform this number. Cory Monteith's reads "Can't Dance," Chris Colfer's reads "Likes Boys,...

Jonathan Franzen's having a good week. Nine years in the making, his new novel Freedom: A Novel grabs rave reviews, the cover of Time ("The Great American Novelist") and is acquired by producer Scott Rudin (who bought his last book, National Book Award-winner The Corrections, which has yet to be turned into a movie; David Hare and Stephen Daldry were once attached). The Corrections also churned up a lot of press, much of it misreported, like the Oprah Winfrey book-club incident (she fired Franzen, not the other way around), which only served to boost sales. Upon its publication, Salon's Andrew O'Hehir wrote: Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" arrives amid so much fanfare--most of it surface noise for which the author himself cannot be held responsible--that it's hard ...

Will the season-nine champ be a Kelly Clarkson or a Taylor Hicks?

"Oh my God. I don't know. This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything," Lee DeWyze said late on Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale. And thus, a new champion was born into the world.
As he heads straight to his career as a professional recording artist, the most obvious question is: Will he be as successful in the music biz as he was on a reality-tv competition? MTV News studied the history of "Idol" winners for clues about how the ninth-season champ's career might turn out.

Disney's latest animated film takes the top prize, while 'The Blind Side' remains strong in second place.

Box-Office Top Five
#1 "The Princess and the Frog" ($25 million)
#2 "The Blind Side" ($15.5 million)
#3 "Invictus" ($9.1 million)
#4 "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($8 million)
#5 "A Christmas Carol" ($6.9 million)
Disney's return to hand-drawn animation proved a royal success as "The Princess and the Frog," the House of Mouse's latest feature-length cartoon, easily won first place at this weekend's box office.
"The Princess and the Frog" earned $25 million in its first weekend in wide release, combining with two earlier weeks of limited-run engagements for a cumulative domestic take of $27.9 million. The film — which features the vocal talents of Terrence Howard, John Goodman and Oprah Winfrey, among others — cost Disney $105 million to produce, so the less-than-$30-million total isn't quite as lucrative as the studio may have hoped for.

David Letterman returned to the air Monday night with his first new show since Nov. 25, and he cautiously took a few swings at Tiger Woods. "Boy, it looks like that Tiger Woods is havin' some trouble, huh?" he opened. After 24 seconds of silence (unless you count the audience's laughter), he spoke again: "You know what, I was thinkin' if this thing happened three months ago, I'd have material for a year." That begs the question: Will Letterman's personal experience dealing with "transgressions" publicly ultimately help or hurt his monologue as Tiger Woods continues to dominate the news? Last night, I'd say it helped.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is the story of an overweight 16-year-old who is physically and emotionally abused. I know, it sounds like an after school special, not a potential Oscar-winning film. Lee Daniels (Shadowboxer) directs his second film which stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. As always, it’s better to read reviews if you are planning on seeing this film. With all of the “said” articles, nothing is off limits. Plot spoilers, big twists and the ending are all fair game for us to talk about. Harrowing drama Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire has been given a massive Oscars boost - the film will be honoured with the Stanley Kramer Award at the 2010 Producers Guild of America prizegiving.
The film’s producers, including Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, will be honoured with the award at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on 24 January at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
The Stanley Kramer Award was established in 2002 to honour "a motion picture, TV series, studio, network, producer, executive or other individual entity whose work illuminates provocative social issues in an accessible and elevating fashion".
A statement from PGA Awards co-chairmen David Friendly and Laurence Mark reads, "Precious is truly a film that... tells us quite eloquently that it isn’t what happens to us that defines who we are, but rather what we choose to become."
The film joins Nine, The Hurt Locker and Invictus among the early Oscar favourites for Best Film.

We shall begin with Amelia, a film I wrote about on Monday as it became the talk of the town with hardly a review in sight and a mere five days until its release. Well, that's all changed as I saw the film early Tuesday morning and it seems most everyone in Los Angeles and New York saw it for the first time as well. While I won't be joining David Poland on the train to completely disembowel Mira Nair's film of the famed aviatrix (and it seems Kris Tapley will also be doing the same), I will admit it's not a very good movie and would agree with Justin Chang's take at Variety when he says the film "offers snazzy aerial photography and inspirational platitudes in lieu of insight into Amelia Earhart's storied life and high-flying career."
