For four seasons stretched across six years, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan infuriated and dazzled lovers of mind-bending sci-fi in equal measure with "Westworld." Some would have you believe the pair's extremely loose small-screen re-imagining of Michael Crichton's 1973 "Westworld" film and its sequels peaked with its first season ... and they'd be right, so far as when it came to telling a twisty, layered story about the nature of consciousness and what it even means to have agency as clearly and cohesively as possible. But as guilty as later seasons were of being needlessly convoluted in order to stay one step ahead of viewers, it's also hard not to (perhaps begrudgingly) admire a show that not only respected its audience but actively goaded them into trying to solve the increasingly baffling puzzle boxes it threw at them ahead of time.

The near-constant rotation of villains in the seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided ample opportunity for guest stars, and some of these roles went to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Sitcom star John Ritter is a killer robot in the season 2 episode "Ted," Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar" plays the victim of a cursed beer in season 4, and "Enchanted" star Amy Adams is featured as Tara's estranged cousin in an episode of season 5. But even in that star-studded milieu, some of the most unforgettable performances in the series were given by breakout actors and indie darlings, like SAG Award-winning multihyphenate Clea DuVall.
You might have forgotten that DuVall made an appearance in "Buffy" — in fact, the actor's character didn't appear very much on-screen at all. In "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," DuVall plays Sunnydale High School student Marcie Ross, a girl who is so shy she turns invisible,...

Hip-hop has something for everyone. That’s the beauty of the genre — but in some instances, it reflects ugly realities. Future’s I Never Liked You and Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss are two 2022 rap albums that lean on misogynistic tropes, in their marketing and lyrical content, to great success. Future fully leaned into being the “toxic king” on his project, amplifying the late, controversial relationship expert Kevin Samuels and lacing the album with glimpses of chauvinist tyranny. Similarly, Her Loss was defined by Drake’s hypermasculine posturing,...

It's been over a month since HBO's "Westworld" was canceled, leaving four seasons of occasionally convoluted prestige TV storytelling unresolved, but we're still getting details about what went on behind the scenes and what the show's streaming fate will be. The latest news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which cites anonymous sources indicating that "Westworld" could have possibly continued with a lower budget and on a different streaming platform than HBO Max.
According to THR's sources, showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan passed on the idea of producing "Westworld" season 5 on a reduced budget for Warner Bros. Discovery's Fast (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) platform. The ratings for "Westworld" had declined precipitously from an audience of 1.8 million, when its first season aired, to about 0.03 million viewers for the fourth season, and it seems Warner Bros. Discovery decided to cut its losses and leverage the show as a Fast tax write-off.

One has to imagine that a robotic host in HBO's "Westworld" would receive the news of the show's untimely cancellation, one season ahead of its planned ending, with the words, "Doesn't look like anything to me." On "Westworld," hosts were programmed not to see things that would hurt them, and for the show's main cast, at least, doing that in real life might be a little easier thanks to the fact that they will still reportedly get paid for the unproduced season 5. Just superimpose dollar signs in the millions over their walking papers and they might not look so bad.
Citing unnamed sources, a new report from Deadline indicates that the core "Westworld" cast — which includes Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris and Aaron Paul — had negotiated pay-or-play deals for season 5. A pay-or-play contract ensures that an actor will still be paid even if the production does...

"Pom Poko" is as much a war movie — with casualties on both sides — as "War for the Planet of the Apes" is, except it passes the Six Laugh Test as a comedy and centers on shapeshifting raccoon dogs with occasional parachute scrotums. If that sounds like a recipe for something special, it is.

No, she’s not playing a superhero (unless you are a lifelong Tanglewood member) but Cate Blanchett is heard describing how she can stop time in the new, strange trailer for “TÁR,” the mysterious upcoming feature from Todd Field.
It’s been 16 years since Field’s last film, “Little Children,” for which Kate Winslet received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, as did Jackie Earle Haley for Best Supporting Actor and Field himself, shared with Tom Perrotta for Best Adapted Screenplay. Prior to “Little Children” was 2001’s “In The Bedroom,” which accrued five Oscar nominations: Sissy Spacek for Best Actress, Tom Wilkinson for Best Actor, Marisa Tomei for Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay for Field and Robert Festinger, and Best Picture.
Field has spent the years since his awards-heavy films not-quite-getting projects off the ground, like a television adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s “Purity” and a movie version of Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian.

In many ways, the 2002 premiere of "The Wire" on HBO helped signal a shift in how the medium of television was perceived. Sure, crime dramas had long existed and had been taken seriously when David Simon's Baltimore-set drama was released. However, "The Wire," not unlike its HBO contemporaries "The Sopranos" and "Carnivàle," took an accessible idea and injected it with much more philosophical and mythical themes.
In the case of "The Wire," the Greek tragedy was a major inspiration and guiding force of the show. While not an adaptation of famous tragedies such as "The Iliad" or "Antigone," the central structures of these theatre...

Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is basking in the acclaim for cricket epic “’83,” an account of the Indian men’s cricket team wining the World Cup in England in 1983.
Directed by Kabir Khan, “’83” follows the journey of the Indian team, rank underdogs having won just a single game in the previous two World Cups, as they upset reigning champions the West Indies to lift the trophy. Singh plays team captain Kapil Dev who motivates the team to victory by both words and personal heroics on the field.
Singh, who is the NBA brand ambassador for India, prepared for the role by initially watching archival footage of Dev. He then went to Delhi and stayed as Dev and his wife Romi’s (played by Deepika Padukone in the film) guest in their home for two weeks, during which time he closely observed the champion sportsman. “They were so warm and welcoming,...

The world is one big carnival, and we’re all just suckers — or “marks,” in the parlance of the traveling grifters so effective at fleecing those poor rubes who are not with it — in Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.” A perfect match of material to auteur, William Lindsay Gresham’s pulpy 1946 novel and the shockingly dark studio picture it inspired give the helmer, hot off his Oscar win for “The Shape of Water,” a chance to go full-film noir, resulting in a gorgeous, fantastically sinister moral fable about the cruel predictability of human nature and the way entire systems — from carnies and con men to shrinks and Sunday preachers — are engineered to exploit it.

Back in the early 2000s, Nick Stahl was Hollywood’s “It” boy. The brooding young actor with the deep-set blue eyes had achieved a career trifecta, starring in an Oscar-nominated indie hit (2001’s In the Bedroom), a cult HBO series (the supernatural Carnivàle, which ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005) and a blockbuster franchise (2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, in which he took over as Skynet Resistance leader John Connor).
But Stahl also had a secret. One that would, in a few short years, consume him and come close to destroying everything he’d achieved. “...

Italy’s Lux Vide, which has been pushing into the U.S. and international markets with high-end shows such as “Medici” and “Leonardo,” recently appointed former Warner Bros. Italy senior exec Barbara Pavone as its chief marketing and sales officer.
As part of her job Pavone, who is attending Mipcom, is dealing with Lux’s international co-productions and partnerships. Not surprisingly, one of her biggest challenges is retaining IP when she negotiates with streamers such as Netflix.
“It’s a privilege to work with global streaming platforms,” says Pavone who recently helped seal Lux’s first deal with a major streamer, details of which are being kept under wraps.
“For Lux it’s a priority to really act as a media company and retain as much as possible [of] the rights,” she notes.

Bollywood star Ranveer Singh and filmmaker S. Shankar are teaming for a Hindi-language remake of 2005 Tamil-language blockbuster “Anniyan.”
Shankar is known for his big-budget extravaganzas including “Sivaji” (2007), “Enthiran” (2010) and its sequel “2.0” (2018), all starring superstar Rajinikanth, and “Indian” (1996), starring actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan. The “Anniyan” remake “will be mounted on a gigantic cinematic canvas,” say the makers.
“Anniyan” features one of Shankar’s pet themes, that of an everyman taking the law into his own hands to fight a corrupt system. The original was dubbed into Hindi and released as ‘Aparichit” in 2006. It had the actor Vikram donning a variety of disguises and personalities, which suits Singh, known for his flamboyant personas including Sultan Alauddin Khilji in “Padmaavat” (2018) and Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev in the upcoming “83.”

The creative team will shortly begin pitching potential U.S. partners.
Executive producer of NBC’s “The Blacklist” and creator and showrunner of HBO’s “Carnivàle,” Daniel Knauf is attached as “The Rising’s” showrunner.
Lux Vide CEO Luca Bernabei and Davis serve as the series’ producers.

New Delhi, March 13 (Ians) While scaling superstardom is often about signing one film at a time, this year many of our actors are ditching the policy to try and flood the market with as many good roles as they can sign up.
With Covid lockdown having kept actors off the big screen for months, many actors are returning with renewed vigour, and lining up multiple releases for the months to come. The likes of Yami Gautam, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Sanon, Rajkummar Rao have five to nine projects each.
Here, a list of Bollywood's busiest:
Kriti Sanon
She has, as of today five projects. While the shooting of Mimi is complete, she is coming close to wrapping Bachchan Pandey. The actress has already started with her supernatural film Bhediya alongside Varun Dhawan. She will also be seen in Ganpath and Adipurush
Taapsee Pannu
Taapsee is literally living out of the suitcase.

Mumbai, March 9 (Ians) Hit director-actor combos are all set to be back in business this year. From Rohit Shetty-Ranveer Singh to Salman Khan-Prabhudheva and from Taapsee Pannu-Anurag Kashyap to Ranbir Kapoor-Ayan Mukerji, there are a host of teams lined up in some of the biggest projects, which have spelt magic at the box office in the past.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh feels this is always a boon. "It is always better to repeat 'jodi's. It doesn't matter if it is actors working again with each other or directors reuniting with actors. The expectation of the audiences increases and there is a curiosity. But, yes, at the end of the day it all depends on content. That has to be good," he said.
Talking about working with Abbas-Mustan again after eight years, in the upcoming film Penthouse, actor Bobby Deol said...
