My guest for this month is Herb van der Poll, and he’s joined me to discuss the film he chose for me, the 1992 American-British satirical mockumentary film Bob Roberts. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly.
Show notes:
The cast is seriously insane, with Tim Robbins, Giancarlo Esposito, Ray Wise, Gore Vidal, John Cusack, Peter Gallagher, Alan Rickman, and Susan Sarandon Oh and also James Spader, Helen Hunt, Jack Black, Jeremy Piven and his sister Shira, and Bob Balaban Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already know we have an election happening The film shows some strong parallels to the presidency of George W. Bush Ray Wise, of course, was famously Laura Palmer’s dad on one of my all time favorite shows, Twin Peaks In this film, he and Alan Rickman play Dick Cheney and Karl Rove type figures Folk music is often in the service of liberal causes,...

Blessed with good looks, a winning smile, hippie parents, and a sunny California upbringing, life has been relatively easy for Logan Wood so far. After nearly four decades of coasting along through countless women and random jobs, he now teaches yoga to the hot moms, trophy wives and aspiring celebrities of Santa Monica and Venice Beach.
But when Logan breaks up with his successful older girlfriend Amanda (Paget Brewster), who happens to be the owner of the yoga studio, things start to get complicated for the first time.
Down Dog is a satirical comedy pilot written by Robin Schiff (Are You There Chelsea?) that stars Josh Casaubon (I Just Want My Pants Back), Lyndsy Fonseca (How I Met Your Mother), Will Greenberg (Halt and Catch Fire), Andrea Savage (The Life and Times of Tim), Amir Talai (American Dad), Alysia Reiner (Orange is the New Black) – with Kris Kristofferson (Lone Star...

As Netflix continues to assert itself as a major television company with such acclaimed series as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Amazon Studios is racing to catch up by ordering series it hopes will be equally well-received. So far, Amazon has scored one big hit in the form of Jeffrey Tambor-led dramedy Transparent, and it hopes to find some more in the new lineup of pilots, which will be made available for viewing as part of the company’s first pilot season of 2015.
Enclosed are descriptions of all seven pilots, courtesy of Deadline. The talented involved on all of them is impressive, to say the least. Mad Dogs comes from Cris Cole (The Bill) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), while The Man In The High Castle hails from Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files). Carlton Cuse (Lost, The Strain) and Randall Wallace (Braveheart) are behind Point Of Honor,...

Who says TV programmers have run out of ideas?
Why, just in the last week, the trade papers have announced deals and casting for as many as 15 new reboots spinoff series and specials. Some sound like familiar shows, others like mutant Frankenstein hybrids of familiar shows. We'll leave it to you to decide which of these programs sound like must-see-tv and which sound like much-skip-tv.
"Care Bears and Cousins." Fuzzy is the new black at Netflix, which is reviving the candy-colored kiddie cartoon series but adding some new characters. No, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are not going to have a threesome with one of them.
"Cheerleader Death Squad." The CW has ordered this series, from the showrunners behind "Desperate Housewives" and "Under the Dome" (that'd be Marc Cherry and Neal Baer, respectively) about an elite prep school where the pep squad is made up of spies-in-training. Dan Truly ("Blue...

He’s the Chief Executive, the Chief Legislator, the Commander-In-Chief, the Chief Diplomat, and just about the Chief Everything. The President of the USA is one of the most symbolic and fictionalised figures in the world.
Barack Obama is inaugurated this week. Will he be able to sort out Iraq? Fix the economy? Restore faith and pride into a divided America? No one knows, but what we can do is look back at some of Hollywood’s offers of President of the United States, and see how they sized up to mighty challenges.
These are the Top Ten Movie Presidents to ever grace our screens.
10. President “Unknown Name” - Henry Fonda (Fail Safe)
In a movie that is practically the serious drama version of Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove; Henry Fonda plays a president on the brink of nuclear destruction. After an accidental breach of Russian security, a missile is launched and is heading for Moscow,...
