Two of Hasbro’s most popular toy lines are set to be combined onscreen as the Transformers and GI Joe franchises are all set for a crossover movie.
A movie crossover between Transformers and GI Joe has been on the table for a long, long time. We first heard it mooted all the way back in 2016 when Hasbro pulled together a writers’ room to hash out a cinematic future for its action-centric toy lines.
In the years since, both franchises have faced waning interest so to Hasbro and Paramount, it looks like sticking them together to try and reinvigorate interest in both properties seems like as good an idea as any other.
In fairness, the comic book histories of both Transformers and GI Joe have a rich history of crossover stories. There was one in the 1980s that fans really enjoyed, while one more recent tale that transplanted the robot...

The official trailer has been released for Sony’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” the children’s book adaptation from director Carlos Saldanha starring Zachary Levi and Zooey Deschanel.
Following the storyline of the 1955 children’s book from author Crockett Johnson, the film chronicles a man named Harold, played by Levi, who can create worlds with the help of his imagination and a purple crayon. In addition to Levi and Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery, Ravi Patel, Camille Guaty, Tanya Reynolds and Pete Gardner round out the film’s cast.
Saldanha’s directing background has largely taken place in the animated space, spearheading prominent children’s films such as “Ice Age,” “Rio” and its sequel “Ferdinand,” “Robots” and more. “Harold and the Purple Crayon” is set to be the director’s first live-action feature.

When Chris Wedge's animated film "Ice Age" first came out in 2002, it was considered novel and striking for many reasons. It was set in prehistoric times yet eschewed dinosaurs in favor of megafauna living in the Pleistocene Epoch. The three main characters were a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), a smilodon named Diego (Denis Leary), and a mammoth named Manfred aka Manny (Ray Romano), and they were engaged in a great migration to flee the oncoming Ice Age. The plot of their first movie apes John Ford's 1946 Western "3 Godfathers," as the three animals discover a human infant that they must keep safe and deliver back to the then-evolutionarily-novel homo sapiens living nearby.
The design of "Ice Age" was striking, aiming for broad, stylized characters that were markedly different from the friendly, big-eyed protagonists of Disney pictures. It certainly helped that the "Ice Age" movies featured a character named Scrat,...

Peter Spellos, a star on the TV series American Dreams and a voice on the animated ‘Transformers’ series, died early Sunday of pancreatic cancer complications. He was 69.
He was at Francisca Hospice House in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to his friend and acting student, Jennifer Smith.
“It is with tremendous sadness that I must report the passing of my dear friend, Peter Spellos at 2:30am this morning,” wrote friend Fred Olen on Facebook. “Many of you knew Peter personally. He had more loving friends than there are stars in the sky. A gentler giant never existed. A talented actor, teacher and wise old owl. He always made me laugh. I cannot even recall how many movies we made together, but they would probably fill a book… maybe some day they will. Goodbye, pal.”
Spelllos voiced the character Sky-Byte on the Transformers: Robots in Disguise cartoon series. He played the role for 39 episodes.

Stories revolving around giant mechanical robots or mechs have existed since the earliest of sci-fi classics, most notably in H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, where Martians used mechanical ‘Tripods’ to lay waste to humanity. In later years, Japan’s obsession with mechs imparted more complex dynamics to the genre, which evolved into narratives concerning the relationship between human beings and sentient robots, culminating in some particular Gundam series and Transformers.
Netflix’s latest release, Mech Cadets, an adaptation of Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa’s Mech Cadets Yu, combines some of the best mech series out there, like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Pacific Rim, to present a vibrant, fresh take on the mech genre. While the lively 3D animation might hook some of the younger generation onto the series, for veteran fans of the genre, it fails to offer anything new or exceptional that hasn’t been done already.

If there were an award only for taking on as many jobs as possible, Anthony Hines and Casper Christensen’s Robot would doubtlessly win it. It’s not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi rom-com. While most rom-coms take their pick out of a list of minor conflicts to conquer by the end of the movie, Robots aims to address America’s hatred for immigrants and hopes to fix an insufferable man-child and an odd gold-digger at the same time. How does it fare? It depends on who you ask. First, let’s get your doubts cleared up about what goes down in Elaine and Charles’ lives when their advanced lookalike androids go rogue.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Summary: What Happens In ‘Robots’?
Here we are in the dystopian aftermath of what could’ve been the state of America if Trump’s dream of keeping Mexican immigrants out with a giant, unsightly wall had come true.

Plot: Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.
Review: Romantic comedies tend to be wholesome and enjoyable without any sort of pertinent social message. The same goes for the typical raunchy sex comedy. Rarely are these two sub-genres seen bundled together, least of all with a science fiction twist. The new film Robots, starring Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley, is both a sex comedy and a romantic one but with a sci-fi angle that is all packaged together into a relevant social message about the immigration reform in the United States. If that sounds like a heavy subject matter, rest assured that it delivers a coherent and funny message that may not be quite as strong as the filmmakers hoped. Nevertheless, Robots is a unique blend of styles that is heartfelt and funny.

We’re three weeks into the summer movie season, and it’s looking much like previous months where only one or two movies are doing well, while all else flounders. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This week’s high-profile release is “Fast X,” the 10th installment of the Universal franchise that began in 2001 with “The Fast and the Furious,” a surprise hit at the time, making stars of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Both of them returned in 2009 for the fourth movie “Fast & Furious,” directed by Justin Lin, who stuck around for three movies including 2021’s “F9.”
Lin left “Fast X” as director, to be replaced by Louis Letterier but Lin’s screenplay was used for what will be the first part of the finale for the entire franchise. Originally, it was meant to be a two-part finale, but Diesel recently stated it would actually be a three-parter,...

"Robots" is a new science fiction romantic comedy feature, written and directed by Anthony Hines and Casper Christensen, starring Shailene Woodley and Jack Whitehall, releasing in theaters May 19, 2023:
"...based on 'The Robot Who Looked Like Me' by Robert Sheckley, the new film is set in an era where advanced robotics have enabled humanity to utilize lifelike androids as servants and manual laborers.
"Affluent suburbanites 'Elaine' (Woodley) and 'Charles' (Whitehall) use android doubles of themselves to avoid the time constraints of dating.

Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and Jack Whitehall (Bad Education) play dual roles as a couple who are shocked to realize that their robot doubles have fallen in love in Robots. It’s really weird that Neon hasn’t done any advertising for Robots, given that it’s set for theatrical release on May 19, 2023. The trailer’s release less than a month out of the film’s premiere is probably the first time most people – other than diehard Woodley or Whitehall fans – will realize this sci-fi comedy exists.
Neon released this very basic synopsis: “Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.”
The comedy is based on a short story by Robert Sheckley and is co-written and co-directed by Anthony Hines (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) and Casper Christensen (Klown). Stephen Camel, Julian Favre, Cassian Elwes,...

"This is terrible! They've completely stolen our lives!" A perfect robo-couple on the run? Neon has revealed an official trailer for an indie sci-fi comedy called Robots, made by two comedy filmmakers named Casper Christensen (Klown) & Anthony Hines (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). This has shown up out of nowhere with a quiet summer release, which is an early sign that it's not very good. As the title indicates, it's actually about androids - or two robots - who go off on their own adventure. Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn to regain their humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves. Starring Shailene Woodley x2 as Elaine, and Jack Whitehall x2 as Charles, Emanuela Postacchini, Chelsea Edmundson, and Richard Lippert. This looks super awkward and not as funny as it should, coming across as a made-for-tv movie more than an indie comedy.

With the advancement of artificial intelligence and just how quickly technology progresses, it feels like we’re getting dangerously close to seeing the first real sci-fi robot. Not like some mindless machine that does preprogrammed tasks, but the type of robot that we saw in sci-fi films with thoughts of its own. Once we get there, who knows, maybe our dating lives will be similar to that of the film “Robots.”

Invisible City (Cidade Invisível) is a series directed by Júlia Pacheco Jordão and Luis Carone. It stars Marco Pigossi, Alessandra Negrini and Jéssica Córes.
The Invisible City is a very original fantasy and thriller series that knows how to swim wonderfully between the waters of the spiritual and criminal worlds, between the supernatural and the detective genre, and it also has an original aesthetic proposal.

A murder thriller that gets lost in local legends, in the world of spirits and magic, and then presents us with a message of environmental conservation.
Very entertaining, well handled and accomplished visual effects (CGI), achieving an attractive series on several levels and one that knows how to continue the successes of the first season in these five new episodes.

It handles the photography very well, and – without losing the fantastic “touch” – knows how to give us a good, entertaining thriller so...

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” took yet another top film prize at yet another awards show on Sunday. At the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards, the maximalist movie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won Best Edited Feature Film for Paul Rogers’ work that stitched together all those multiverses. On the drama side of theatrical film releases, “Top Gun: Maverick,” edited by Eddie Hamilton, took top honors.
Surprises were few among the film winners, with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” edited by Ken Schretzmann and Holly Klein, triumphing yet again. And “Fire of Love,” edited by Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput, followed up its recent DGA win with another victory in the documentary category.
In general, the Ace Eddie Award for film editing has been a fairly reliable predictor of Oscar success in the Best Film Editing category, with the two awards matching about two-thirds of the time...

The film, which will be released on Hulu, is set to star Cailee Spaeny. Though we don't have any information yet about what role she'll play or what the story of the film is, we do know that she'll have a co-star in Isabela Merced, according to Deadline.
Merced recently co-starred as Juliet Capulet in the comedy film "Rosaline," a re-telling of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" from the perspective of Romeo's former lover. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was the big winner at the 50th annual Annie Awards, winning five categories in the award show that honors the best in animation. Fellow Oscar-nominees “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” won three and two awards, respectively.
“Pinocchio” led all films with nine nominations and went into the ceremony as a strong favorite to win the top award. The dark stop-motion take on the “Pinocchio” story also came into the ceremony at a time when its distributor, Netflix, has been dominating the Annies. Last year, its film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was nominated in eight categories and won all eight, including Best Feature, while the eventual Oscar winner “Encanto” settled for three awards in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated. The Super Bowl teaser trailer for "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" served double duty as a Porsche commercial. That's because Mirage, one of the film's new Autobots, transforms into a silver-colored 964-Gen Porsche 911 with a blue racing stripe running down the middle. This car choice is era-appropriate -- "Rise of the Beasts" takes place in 1994, the year this Porsche model ceased production after debuting in 1989.
Prominently featured in both trailers so far -- they open with the Porsche, in fact -- it looks like Mirage will take over Bumblebee's usual role as the Autobot friend of the human lead. In this case, the primary human is called Noah and is played by Anthony Ramos ("In the Heights").
The trailers also indicate how the two meet. Noah stumbles on Mirage chilling in a New York City parking garage. After Noah enters the "car," it begins driving itself. The two are caught in a police chase,...

Jennifer Coolidge is a testament to what great talent, confidence, charisma, and wit can bring to the table in Hollywood. The entertainment industry has a long, tired history of misogyny and mistreatment of women, particularly older actresses, but Coolidge has defied the odds by continuing to shine into her 50s and 60s. Coolidge’s immense comedic skills have broken the mold for decades now.
Jennifer Coolidge’s most famous role is arguably her iconic portrayal of Stifler’s Mom in the cult classic American Pie films. Twenty years later, she received well-earned awards publicity with an Emmy win for ditzy dame Tanya McQuoid on HBO’s hit The White Lotus. Audiences will get to enjoy her presence in the second season of the show premiering on October 30, so we thought this would be a great time to celebrate the greatest roles of her career!

Hasbro’s entertainment studio Entertainment One is producing a new documentary on the classic tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, billed as the definitive take. Dungeons & Dragons writer and official ambassador Joe Manganiello has come aboard to direct with Kyle Newman (1Up), with the film to be released in 2024, as the game celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons was first published by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. in 1974, and has been distributed by Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast since 1997. The game, overseen by a player known as The Dungeon Master, sees others form an adventuring party that will embark on quests through fantasy worlds, in order to take their experience to the next level. More than 50 million fans have interacted with or played D&d — one of Hasbro’s key brands — since it was first published 48 years ago, including via videogames...

The first season of Prime Video's "Invincible" quickly established itself as one of the best superhero shows on the market, targeting adult audiences with its ultra-violent animated action and remarkably relatable coming-of-age story. A subversion of the genre, the series does not hesitate to divert from typical superhero fare through its mature storytelling. It also produces some of the funniest memes on the internet, a byproduct of the show's popularity and distinct personality. With a second season now in development, the animated series looks to up the ante in every way possible and reach new heights in popularity.
Based on the comic book created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, "Invincible" has a lot of source material to pull from. The first season only adapts a fraction of the comic book series, leaving volumes of stories ripe for a bigger, bloodier second outing. If you don't believe us, hear out Steven Yeun,...

Are you ready to find “Lost Ollie?”
The upcoming Netflix series, which debuts August 24, is based on a story by William Joyce, whose stories have been adapted into “Robots,” “Meet the Robinsons” and “Rise of the Guardians.” It follows a lovable, hopelessly lost toy rabbit named Ollie (voiced by Jonathan Groff) as he searches for his young owner (Kesler Talbot).
His search sees him traversing many dangers in a surprisingly naturalistic deep south, as he teams up with a clown doll named Zozo (Tim Blake Nelson) and a battle-hardened bear (Mary J. Blige). And you can watch the trailer (above).

Coming off of an Oscar win for his short-animated film The Windshield Wiper, Alberto Mielgo is continuing his exploration of the meaning of love and the many forms it takes in “Jibaro”, his latest addition to the Love Death + Robots anthology.
Netflix’s Love Death + Robots is a collection of animated shorts that surround three key subjects: love, death, and robots. The third season premiered in May of this year, and includes Mielgo’s return to the series after winning an Emmy for his 2019 episode, “The Witness”.
“Jibaro” follows the strange but deadly attraction between a siren and a deaf knight who is immune to her supernatural charms. The two become obsessed with each other for selfish reasons, which leads to disastrous results.
Instead of the traditional siren from Greek mythology, Mielgo based the siren on the folklore of many different countries. Rather than entrancing men with a beautiful tune,...

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.
