“Broad City” has already made its feelings about which way it leans in the political spectrum.
After all, this Comedy Central series about two liberated young women in New York even had an episode in which its co-creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson work for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Clinton herself made a cameo in the episode.
Glazer, who stars in the comedy “Rough Night” with Scarlett Johnasson, Kate McKinnon and Zoe Kravitz, spoke to USA Today about the upcoming season of “Broad City.”
27 TV Shows Created by Woman Starring Women
“We wrote [Season 4] being like, ‘Here we go! Hillary for president!'” Glazer said in the interview. Obviously, history did not play out according to that scenario, and Glazer added that after “this game-show host became president of our country, we rewrote a lot.”
Rewriting the show doesn’t mean giving equal airtime to the President though.

Cannes will be hit with a huge dose of handsome next month, as Deadline reports that Timothy Olyphant, Lee Pace, and Jason Sudeikis are set to star in a movie about the FBI’s real-life sting on car designer John DeLorean. Sudeikis and Olyphant will team up, Catch Me If You Can-style, with the former playing a con-artist-turned-informant who helps Olyphant’s FBI agent get his man. Pace will play the Dmc founder, who, in addition to working on cutting-edge automobile designs, tried to save his failing business by trafficking cocaine. The FBI set up a sting to catch him handling 59 pounds of coke, but the organization’s efforts were just interpreted as entrapment at DeLorean’s trial, and he was found not guilty. The film is set to begin filming in Puerto Rico this September.

You needn’t be gifted or amazing, just follow this advice.
Whatever your opinion of his Amazing Spider-Man movies, there’s no denying Marc Webb’s proficiency as a director. He’s been filming in some capacity since he was a kid and spent many years after college honing his craft helming music videos (regular clients included Green Day, Ashlee Simpson, and My Chemical Romance) before making his feature debut in 2009 with the hit romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer.
Now, following his two Spidey installments, he’s back to directing smaller movies, two of which arrive this year: Gifted, which opens in theaters on Friday, and Amazon’s The Only Living Boy in New York, which first hits cinemas in August. In the following collection of tips to aspiring filmmakers, he shares advice on working on different scales, making mistakes, the importance of collaboration, and giving actors freedom.

Syfy Films continues to expand into the theatrical arena with their new feature, Atomica, a character-driven science fiction drama about three people who are unsure if they can trust one another as they attempt to get a futuristic power station back online. With Atomica now out in select theaters and coming out on VOD and digital HD beginning March 21st, Daily Dead recently caught up with director Dagen Merrill for our latest Q&A feature to discuss realizing his vision on a budget, how to find hope within a bleak depiction of the future, and more.
Could you give a bit of background on how you came to be involved in the project? Was this something that came to you or were you part of developing it? What about Atomica made you want to tell this story?
Dagen Merrill: I had an investor approach me about making a low-budget film.

On the phone from his Copenhagen kitchen the week before Cannes, Nic Winding Refn knows the drill. He’d already brought two violent underworld thrillers starring Ryan Gosling to compete at Cannes, and served on the jury. Los Angeles-set “Drive” was a global hit, while “Only God Forgives,” set in Thailand, was more divisive and controversial.
So as soon as Refn finished his latest film, horror story “The Neon Demon” (which had already been acquired by his “Drive” distributor Bob Berney for Amazon Studios release, one of five in the festival), he submitted it to Cannes. “Then you hold your breath as long as you can,” he told me. “I was lucky I didn’t have to hold it for too long. The word masterpiece is thrown around a lot these days. Hell, I’m as guilty of maybe having a little bit of hyperbole in my reviews as anyone. However, when one is ostensibly slapped in the face by one of the true titans of cinema history, there are few better words to describe it.

There are few filmmakers working today quite like Mia Hansen-Løve.
Starting off her career as an actress working with filmmakers like Olivier Assayas, Hansen-Love jumped behind the camera in 2007 with her debut writing-directing gig, Tout est pardonne. Evolving into one of today’s most interesting voices of human drama thanks to masterpieces like Goodbye First Love, Hansen-Love is a filmmaker unlike any other, not only becoming one of today’s great female voices, but one of the most interesting auteurs world cinema currently offers.

Jk Simmons seems like a pretty inspired choice to host “Saturday Night Live,” with his acting versatility baked into his lengthy track record in both the most serious of dramas and silliest of comedies. He’s been in seemingly everything, but his recent award-winning turn in “Whiplash” is getting him the kind of attention not often bestowed upon him. Look for at least one sketch tonight parodying that film, and at least one or two others that reference one of his many, many, many roles. I’m primarily curious tonight about the show’s focus. After a bad episode with Blake Shelton, and the fortieth anniversary show right around the corner, how much attention can really be on this episode? The worst case scenario is that there are a lot of half-formed ideas that don’t really reach fruition. But the upside could be that this could be a weird,...

The Visual Effects Society (Ves) announced on Tuesday (January 13) its nominees for the 13th Annual Ves Awards, set to take place on February 4 in Los Angeles.
Nominees were selected by Ves members via events hosted by its nine sections: Australia, Bay Area, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, New Zealand, Toronto and Vancouver.
As previously announced, the Visionary Award will be presented to Jj Abrams. Due to a change in his production schedule, Ridley Scott will not receive the Lifetime Achievement Award on the night. Ves executives said they would find another occassion to honour the film-maker.
“Visual effects in and by themselves are nothing unless they serve the story,” said Ves chair Jeffrey A Okun. “This year, more than ever, we are seeing amazing work that not only serves the story but tells the story in a manner never before seen.

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:15 Pm: The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies dropped some gold coins on its way to the bank today to deposit its actual results. The finale of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy was off 1.7% from its Sunday five-day estimate of $90.6M, for a current reported cume of $89.1M. That figure still beats the first five days of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug ($86.1M).
The Warner Bros./New Line/MGM film wasn’t the only one off from its Sunday: Sony’s Annie came in about $440K under today with $15.86M in third, while Fox’s Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb was down $200K.
Essentially, yesterday wound up not being as robust as expected for distribs with it being the last Sunday before Christmas. Warner Bros. projected $18.2M yesterday for Five Armies, but filed $16.73M, while Sony estimated $4.9M but came in closer to $4.5M.

After months of on-set reports, wild rumors, tweeted photos and cryptic interviews, Disney and J.J. Abrams have finally unleashed the very first teaser trailer for "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." Even after watching it 500 times (watch it again at the top of the page), fans still have questions about what they saw in the same way they did in for 1977's 'Star Wars" and 1999's "The Phantom Menace." With that in mind, it's time to turn back the clock to re-visit the ever-evolving teasers released in advance of all six films, to compare them to the new "Episode VII" teaser. But they don't make very good civil servants, as seen in the new video for "Blockbuster Night Part 1," from their recently-released free album "Run the Jewels 2." Driven by a typically brutal yet still melodic El-p beat, "Blockbuster" finds the duo cruising around the city as the world's worst Emergency Medical Technicians. In a playful and even darker spin on Martin Scorsese's 1999 film "Bringing Out the Dead," they get high on their on supply, abandon a kitten stuck in a tree, forget to pick up an accident victim, and ignore another one dying of a heart attack, while they sip their coffee and smoke cigarettes a few feet away. This Friday April 25th The Filadelfia celebrates its third annual edition with an impressive line up of the best of Latino film from Mexico to Chile to Colombia, The Us and even a film made with the youth of Philly. Opening night film will be the super 1943 classic ‘Maria Candelaria’ starring Dolores Del Rio. For those near the city of brotherly amor we’ve done ya homework and listed their films below!
Opening Night: Maria Candelaria (Mexico)
Starring Dolores del Rio and Pedro Armendáriz, Maria Candelaria was the first Mexican film to be screened at the Cannes International Film Festival, and the first Latin American film awarded the Gran Prix. Gabriel Figueroa, the film’s cinematographer, was nominated for an Academy Award for The Night of the Iguana, and is often referred to as “the Fourth Muralist” of Mexico.
A young journalist presses an old artist (Alberto Galán ) to show a portrait of a naked indigenous woman that he has in his study. The body of the movie is a flashback to Xochimilco, Mexico, in 1909. The film is set right before the Mexican Revolution, and Xochimilco is an area with beautiful landscapes inhabited mostly by indigenous people.
The woman in the painting is María Candelaria (Dolores del Rio), a young Indian woman who is constantly rejected by her own people for being the daughter of a prostitute. She and her lover, Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendariz), face constant struggles throughout the film. They are honest and hardworking, yet nothing ever goes right for them. Don Damian (Miguel Inclán), a jealous Mestizo store owner who wants María for himself, prevents them from getting married. He kills a piglet that María and Lorenzo plan to sell for profit and he refuses to buy vegetables from them. When María falls ill with malaria, Don Damian refuses to give the couple the quinine medicine necessary to fight the disease. Lorenzo breaks into his shop to steal the medicine, and he also takes a wedding dress for María. Lorenzo goes to prison for stealing, and María agrees to model for the painter to pay for his release. The artist begins painting a portrait of María, but when he asks her to pose nude she refuses.
The artist finishes the painting with the nude body of another woman. When the people of Xochimilco see the painting, they assume it is María Candelaria and stone her to death. Finally, Lorenzo escapes from prison )to carry María's lifeless body through Xochimilco's canal of the dead.
Bad Hair/Pelo Malo (Venezuela)
The third film from the filmmaker and plastic artist Mariana Rondón, Pelo Malo stars Junior, a 9 year-old with "bad hair". To Kill A Man/Matar A Un Hombre (Chile)

Read the Interview with Dir. Alejandro Fernandez Almendras
A thriller about a hardworking family man Jorge who is just barely making ends meet. When he gets mugged by Kalule, a neighborhood delinquent, Jorge's son decides to confront Kalule, only to get himself shot in the process. Sentenced to a scant 2 years in prison for the offense, Kalule, released and now intent on revenge, goes on the warpath, terrorizing Jorge's family. With his wife, son and daughter at the mercy of a thug, Jorge has no choice but to take justice into his own hands, and live with the emotional and psychological consequences.
Lines of class and masculinity ignite friction in this rugged thriller, adeptly shot with a discerning eye. Director Alejandro Fernández Almendras elevates raw grit to a new level with a tone that is both elemental and prophetic. Rife with unnerving tension, To Kill a Man is ultimately a surprising exploration of the heavy burden of what it takes to do what the title suggests.

Cesar’S Last Fast (USA)
Read the Review
In 1988, Cesar Chavez embarked on what would be his last act of protest in his remarkable life. Driven in part to pay penance for feeling he had not done enough, Chavez began his “Fast for Life,” a 36-day water-only hunger strike, to draw attention to the horrific effects of unfettered pesticide use on farm workers, their families, and their communities.
Using never-before-seen footage of Chavez during his fast and testimony from those closest to him, directors Richard Ray Perez and Lorena Parlee weave together the larger story of Chavez’s life, vision, and legacy. A deeply religious man, Chavez’s moral clarity in organizing and standing with farm workers at risk of his own life humbled his family, friends, and the world. Cesar’s Last Fast is a moving and definitive portrait of the leader of a people who became an American icon of struggle and freedom.

Forbidden Lovers Meant To Be (USA)
Working with talented high school students from North Philadelphia at Taller Puertorriqueño’s Youth Artist Program, filmmakers Joanna Siegel, Melissa Beatriz Skolnick, and Kate Zambon sought to capture the personal and artistic journeys of the youth through film. While facilitating collaborative film workshops with the students, themes of race/ethnicity, cultures, language, and identity emerged. Throughout this process of engaging in story development and visual representation, the students created a video of their own, while the filmmakers documented the process using metafilm techniques. The students' short film, Forbidden Lovers Meant to Be, highlights the talent and creativity of these youth. Forbidden Lovers Meant to Be was created by the spring 2012 Youth Artist Program participants: Amy Lee Flores, Ricardo Lopez, Michael Mendez, Zayris Rivera, Tashyra Suarez, Nestor Tamayo, Yoeni Torres, Karina Ureña Vargas, and Kara Williams.

The more Junior tries to look sharp and make his mother love him, the more she rejects him, until he is cornered, face to face with a painful decision.

Julia Stiles (the Bourne movie franchise) has been tapped for the lead in TNT‘s drama pilot Guilt By Association, from former prosecutor Marcia Clark, on whose book the project is based, and Dee Johnson. The project centers on Rachel Knight (Stiles), a talented, unorthodox and impulsive Deputy Da in the La County District Attorney’s office who sometimes operates outside the law in order to uphold it. Rachel relies on her cohorts — fashionable prosecutor Toni Lacollette (Rose Rollins) and tough-as-nails Detective Bailey Keller (Elisabeth Röhm) — for all things professional and personal. Driven by compassion but haunted by guilt, Rachel tackles the Special Trials Unit’s most difficult cases and does so with humor, an edge, and an “evidence is for pussies” attitude. When the suspicious death of a close colleague throws her own judgment into question, Rachel must rely on her connections and instincts to solve the case and clear her friend’s name.

With Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day falling on the same wintery weekend, the studios are betting that love sick couples and self-loathing singles will both be lining up for some romantic movies this weekend -- how else to explain the simultaneous release of an unnecessary "Endless Love" remake, an "About Last Night" redo, and "Winter's Tale," arguably the most "original" of the three V-Day offerings but still an adaptation of a 1983 novel written by Mark Helprin.
The film was written and directed by Akiva Goldsman, perhaps best known for his Oscar-winning screenplay for "A Beautiful Mind" (or, conversely, for running the Batman franchise into the ground with the script for "Batman & Robin"), and stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, and Russell Crowe. Update, 8 Am: After hitting its goal of 200,000 signatures on its petition calling for A&E Network to immediately reinstate Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson in just a few days, the organization that calls itself Faith Driven Consumers set a new goal of 250,000. Which it hit the night after Christmas. Christmas, not coincidentally is the day the extremely press-savvy Phil decided to illustrate one of his comments to GQ and a subsequent church group meeting that “If you’re a man, find yourself a woman. Marry them and keep your sex right there…Common sense says we are not going to procreate the human race unless we have a man and a woman. From the beginning Jesus said, ‘It is a man and a woman.’” In a photo tweeted Christmas Day by his granddaughter, Phil is seen pointing to an apparently new wedding ring on the finger of his wife, Miss Kay,...

As a 20-year-old film critic, one of the things I always look out for, and do my best to thoughtfully report on, is how filmmakers represent modern teenage life. Having been in high school only a few years ago, the lack of authenticity in cinematic representations of adolescence is a constant annoyance to me, albeit one I understand. Those who have progressed enough in their careers to actually get movies made are far removed from their teenage years, and if youth is a subject they want to tackle, they will either have to craft a period piece specific to their personal memories and experiences – which can turn out spectacularly, as both Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and David Chase’s Not Fade Away, for instance, took spots on my 2012 top-ten list – or work in a contemporary setting and risk seeming completely out of touch. While issues of language,...

The rumours have been circulating for a few months now, and Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Star Wars will be taking a leaf out of Marvel’s precedent-setting playbook.
We heard back in November that Simon Kinsberg (Sherlock Holmes) and Lawrence Kasdan (Return of the Jedi) had been hired to start writing scripts, which at the time we thought were for Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX.
Now the studios reveal that the two will be consulting on the upcoming new trilogy, but that they will each in fact be writing spin-offs instead, which was a possibility we heard soon after the news first surfaced.
So far, two spin-off films have been confirmed, but it’s likely that we can expect more in the years to come – both sequels to those spin-offs, and further spin-offs to expand the universe even further.

Dwight Henry was working nights in his small New Orleans bakery when Hollywood came calling. Now his film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, is up for four Oscars. But he's still manning the ovens
It's a way of life!" Dwight Henry says, thumping the table of his Buttermilk Drop Bakery and Café on a sticky December morning in New Orleans. He's rhapsodising about the city's cuisine, and how it's better than anywhere else in the world. "Music knits people together in some strange way. Same thing with food. We have seafood boils for any reason, just because it's a beautiful day outside."
He picks up a promotional pamphlet for Beasts of the Southern Wild, the film in which he stars as the volatile father of six-year-old Hushpuppy, who is finding her place in a remote corner of the Louisiana bayou. On one page his tiny co-star, Quvenzhané Wallis, is striking...

Tucked inside the news that Shailene Woodley is in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the news that director Marc Webb is also on the hunt for an actor to play Peter Parker’s best friend, roommate, and eventual arch enemy Harry Osborn.
The role of the troubled only son of mysterious and distant mega-conglomerate mogul Norman Osborn was, of course, played by James Franco in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies. Franco was cast as the rakishly handsome counterpart to Tobey Maguire’s nerdy everyman, but with the new Peter Parker played by the rather rakishly handsome Andrew Garfield,...

Talking with Collider while promoting his new movie People Like Us, Chris Pine talks about the highly anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. He discusses the pressure that the cast feels since the sequel's anticipation is so high, while also dishing on Abrams mashing a character driven story with plenty of action. Pine also shares his thoughts on filming with IMAX cameras (it was recently confirmed that the film will be released in IMAX 3D, and that key scenes were shot in IMAX). On Having Big Action In A Character Driven Story: Those big films are scary things. There’s so much money behind those things. There’s that hype. You enter a machine. I’m just happy that the people behind it were such good, welcoming types. J.J. [Abrams] runs that ship. J.J. is a wonderful guy. What they bring to this kind of film is a small character-driven story,...

Like the teenage thieves featured in the script, Sofia Coppola is wasting no time raiding casting lists for performers to join her latest film, The Bling Ring. Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock have all now signed on. Ripped from the headlines (albeit those of 2009), Ring will tell the story of a group of teenage girls arrested in La after breaking into the homes of celebrities including Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom. Driven by their desire to copy the jewellery-bedecked and bauble-happy types they saw in magazines and on reality TV, these pilfering princesses weren’t exactly Moriarty-level criminal masterminds.Emma Watson was cast just last week, with newcomers Chang, Pfister and Rock all set to play fellow members of the criminal gang. Broussard will be a thief who helps them out, with Farmiga as a schoolmate and Mann as the mother of two of the girls.

Many—maybe too many, looking at this bunch of bone-tired warriors of Av-virtue—were the travels the Ferroni Brigade embarked on all through 2011: oftentimes for festivals all over Europe, sometimes for visits to this archive or that as part of our programming arbeit (to be read with a Japanese drawl). During those months in the dark, we saw a lot—some of which chimed and rhymed with new works we encountered in this multiplex back home or that gallery abroad, on this collector's Steenbeck or in that producer's private projection room (they still exist).
On one of those trips, we were joined by our main Mubi-man, His Kasness a.k.a. the Kasest with whom we plunged one evening into a brainstorming on what The Festival would look and feel like (truth be told: it was more like a communal delirium—but what do you expect from folks sitting...
