“Sherlock Holmes 3,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, has been selected by the California Film Commission to receive a conditional $20.8 million tax credit for shooting in California.
Other feature films announced Monday include a Warner Bros. remake of “Little Shop of Horrors” with a $9.6 million credit; Will Smith’s “King Richard” with a $7.5 million credit for Warner Bros.; Universal’s “Purge 5” with $6.4 million; Atlas Entertainment’s “Janis” with $2.5 million; “American Pie Presents: Girls Rule” with $1.1 million; and four other projects with a $2.5 million credit — “Cherry,” “Macbeth,” “Pandora” and “Untitled Atomic Monster Film.”
The commission said the 10 projects will generate an estimated $310 million in qualified spending (defined as below-the-line wages and payments to in-state vendors). The “Sherlock Holmes” project alone will generate an estimated $106.8 million in qualified expenditures — the second highest project spending to date for Program 2.0 behind the $118 million in qualified expenditures for “Captain Marvel.”

Upcoming slate includes new films from Steve McQueen, Mike Leigh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ben Wheatley.
Film4 boss Daniel Battsek last night confirmed that the division has secured a £25m budget for 2017/18 for the second year in a row.
The funding boost once again gives the broadcaster a significantly increased war chest on the £15m it was previously allocated and the £10-13m of BBC Films.
The division’s funding was increased to the record £25m in 2016 under the stewardship of former director David Kosse.
Speaking at the company’s annual pre-Cannes bash, Battsek, who took over from Kosse last July, praised outgoing Channel4 boss David Abraham for his commitment to Film4 and lamented the departure of Film4 head of creative Rose Garnett who is departing to lead BBC Films.

Unlike the beating he took for his stage to screen translation of God of Carnage with Carnage, Polanski’s Venus in Fur, a film that was scheduled so late in Cannes Film Festival’s Main Comp that in many respects became an end of fest delightful surprise (see our festival wrap-up) has found a home (potentially beating out Spc) in the U.S. via Sundance Selects. We expect some added fall film festival showings (possibly Telluride or Tiff) before it secures an end of year slot.
Gist: Set in modern-day Paris, Venus In Fur follows writer-director Thomas (Amalric) and a pushy, foul-mouthed actress named Vanda (Seigner) who bursts into auditions in a whirlwind of erratic energy. Vanda’s emotionally charged audition for the gifted but demanding playwright becomes an electrifying game of cat and mouse that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, and ultimately, attraction and obsession.

Filmmaker Magazine's 15th edition of their annual "25 New Faces of Independent Film" has landed. On the list are 37 up-and-coming directors, screenwriters, actors, producers and cinematographers. The magazine notes the trend of increased international filmmakers, cross-pollination between film and the visual arts and Us filmmakers going overseas to find their stories. The mag's editor-in-chief, Scott Macaulay, states that the list "has always favored those whose creativity shines in not just their films but in the ways they begin their careers,..[those on the 2012 list] demonstrate enormous ingenuity as they find new ways to establish themselves and connect with their audiences." Notable alumnae of the list include Lena Dunham (on fire with her "Girls" Emmy noms), Sean Durkin ("Martha Marcy May Marlene," the upcoming "Janis"), Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine," "The Place Beyond the Pines"), Hilary...

Exclusive: After recently winning the Tony for best actress in a play for Venus In Fur, Nina Arianda will make her screen-starring debut playing 1960s rock icon Janis Joplin. Joplin, a film that looks back on the final six months of the singer’s life with flashbacks to her early career, will be directed by Sean Durkin, whose feature debut Martha Marcy May Marlene won him a slew of festival acclaim including Best Director at Sundance. Joplin will be made for a budget under $20 million, with production to start early next year, said producer Peter Newman, who with his partners have spent the last 12 years trying to put an indie film together with rights that include exclusive use of 21 of Joplin’s best-known songs. He said Arianda will sing Joplin’s tunes in the film, and that she has the chops to do justice to Joplin’s signature gritty sound.

It could have been Renée, it could have been Zooey, but now Amy Adams looks set to play Janis Joplin. Priya Elan hopes it doesn't Jormp the shark
In Hollywood, the Janis Joplin story is a cinematic mirage. Like On The Road, Atlas Shrugged, and the remake of Barbarella, it's been a cornerstone of "Development Hell", chewed over so much that many wondered if it actually existed. There was the unauthorised Piece Of My Heart, which was to star Renée Zellweger or Brittany Murphy. There was The Gospel According To Janis which Penelope Spheeris was down to direct with Zooey Deschanel or P!nk. Thirdly there was an untitled flick, thought to be an adaptation of Laura Joplin's off-Broadway play about her sister (Laura Theodore, the show's star, was attached).
So it came as some surprise when Amy Adams was announced as starring in a new Joplin project. Directed by Fernando (City Of God) Meirelles,...

Elf actress Zooey Deschanel has replaced singer Pink as Janis Joplin in the biopic Gospel According To Janis. The singer pulled out of the Penelope Spheeris film earlier this year and, after much speculation, Deschanel was eventually selected to take over the role. The script has gone through several revisions and now focuses on former Rolling Stone writer David Dalton, who was once assigned to write a cover story comparing the troubled Joplin to Judy Garland. Dalton accompanied the singer on a long tour and his adventures have become the central plot for the film. Deschanel has spent the past four months working with a vocal coach to help her mimic Joplin's gritty vocals, and she will sing all of Joplin's songs featured in the film. According to producer Peter Newman, it has been a struggle to find an actress who could sing or a singer who could act. He says, "Zooey is the first we found who excels at both." Filming will begin on November 13 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the film is scheduled for release in 2008. Oscar winner Renee Zellweger is attached to another film about Joplin's life, but it is currently on hold at Paramount Pictures while the script is reworked.

Zooey Deschanel has beaten Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Scarlett Johansson to the coveted role of Janis Joplin in the forthcoming movie biopic of the tragic singer. Pop punk Pink was originally director Penelope Spheeris' first choice to play the late rocker, but pulled out, blaming the movie's producers for turning the casting process into "some circus pop contest - who's the 'it' girl who wants to play Janis." However, Almost Famous beauty Deschanel, 26, has signed to play Joplin in The Gospel According To Janis, which starts filming in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in November. "Piece Of My Heart" hitmaker Joplin died of an heroin and alcohol overdose in a Hollywood hotel room in October 1970 at the age of 27.

Penelope Spheeris has found her Pearl. According to Production Weekly, Zooey Deschanel has been tapped to star in the director's planned biopic The Gospel According to Janis Joplin. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy girl will portray the raspy-voiced rocker who took the late '60s music scene by storm with such hits as "Piece of My Heart" and "Cry Baby" before dying from an overdose at the age of 27. Musician Pink was once considered for the role, while Reneée Zellweger also mulled over starring in a rival Joplin project. Filming for the Spheeris-helmed flick is scheduled to begin this November in Philadelphia.
