Among the issues that have plagued development of The Hobbit in recent memory: financing troubles [1] due to studio bankruptcy; a major directorial change [2] after years of delays; actors boycotting the production [3]; a thankfully avoided [4] location change from New Zealand; the firey destruction [5] of one of Peter Jackson's workshops; and most recently, a perforated ulcer [6] that cost the director a trip to the hospital and the film its February start date. It's with all this in mind that it gives me great pleasure to announce that finally, at long last, cameras are set to begin rolling on The Hobbit in March. (Rejoice.) Read some quick, hopeful words from director Peter Jackson, along with a full list of the confirmed cast, after the break. Many wondered whether Peter Jackson's recent health troubles would cost the films their planned December 2012/2013 release dates, but fear not. His surgery may have caused "a...

Peter Jackson is slowly gathering Lord of the Rings veterans for The Hobbit. First there were [1] Cate Blanchett and then [2] Elijah Wood. Now we know that Andy Serkis will definitely be back in a mo-cap suit to reprise the role of Gollum. Update: And so will Ian McKellan. More after the break. Deadline [3] reports that a deal is locked for Andy Serkis, and says that sources say Ian McKellen is working on his deal to return, Christopher Lee is in talks to play Saruman once more, and Ian Holm is likely to return as the older version of Bilbo Baggins, who will be played in most of The Hobbit films by Martin Freeman. (Edit: Just after we published this story, THR [4] announced that the deal for Ian McKellen was done, so he's locked.) Mr. Serkis, of course, will once again play Gollum, the man who was twisted into a creature...

But when they're accidentally left behind, it's up to Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the toys to create a Hawaiian paradise right in Bonnie's room. According to Deadline, Cate Blanchett is reprising her role as Galadriel in at least one of the two Hobbit films. It has been reported that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and even Guillermo del Toro (before quitting the director’s chair) would be making necessary changes to the story in order to include a couple of established characters from the original film trilogy.
Jackson said: “Cate is one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films.”
After New Line Cinema announced Cate Blanchett’s return to Middle Earth rumours have spread that
Orlando Bloom will likely be the next original cast member set for an encore. According to another report from Deadline, he’s near a deal to return as Elven archer Legolas in what might be more than a cameo.

Another group of actors has been added to the cast of Peter Jackson's two-part adaptation of The Hobbit, and it includes a familiar face.
It's being reported that Cate Blanchett will return to the role of Galadriel, the Elvin Lady of the Wood she played in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The character never appeared in J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit, but as it goes with adaptations, Jackson has decided to use her in some aspect of the story.
Of Blanchett's return, Jackson said "Cate is one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films."
Other newly cast actors include Ken Stott (King Arthur, Charlie Wilson's War) as a Dwarven Lord named Balin, Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who [1987-1989]) as a wizard named Radagast the Brown, and Mikael Persbrandt (Day and Night,...

File this under 'expected:' Cate Blanchett, who played the elf Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and provided the opening narration for The Fellowship of the Ring, has joined the cast of The Hobbit. She'll reprise the role of Galadriel in at least one of the two Hobbit films, though we don't know which, or if she'll be in both. In addition, more casting has been announced and/or confirmed, and the info is all after the break. Fans of The Hobbit are probably asking how this could be expected, given that Galadriel isn't in the book. But we've known that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro (who co-wrote before vacating the director's chair) would be including material from J.R.R. Tolkien's other supplemental tales of Middle Earth, and possibly reworking The Hobbit a bit to include a couple of established characters. And while it...

Cate Blanchett is returning as Galadriel in The Hobbit, which Peter Jackson directs in February. Jackson has also set Ken Stott (Charlie Wilson's War) to play Dwarf Lord Balin, Sylvester McCoy (Dr. Who) to play the wizard Radagast the Brown, and Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt (Day and Night) to play shape-shifter Beorn. Ryan Gage (Outlaw) will play Drogo Baggins and Jed Brophy (who appeared in the original The Lord of the Rings) will play the dwarf Nori, and William Kircher will play the dwarf Bifur. On Blanchett's return as the ethereal Lady of Lothlorien, Jackson said: "Cate if one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films." Jackson--who wrote the script with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro--previously announced that Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins.

It was 5 a.m. and I was jet-lagged, having just flown from Heathrow Airport in my hometown of London to JFK Airport in NYC. New York!! "Be careful what you wish for. It might come true!" my dad once said to six-year-old me when I mentioned my ambition to move to the States—to New York City in particular—and become an actress. Of course, I listened to his comments but did not understand. Sixteen years later, though he is no longer alive to churn out these pearls, he would be proud of me. I was now there, in New York studying at Stella Adler, waiting to discover whether that 'dream come true' was a warning or a blessing. A taxi took me from the airport to a youth hostel in midtown. As I paid the man and jumped out at the corner—my suitcase on wheels dragging behind me...

Nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Nominations were announced this morning with How to Train Your Dragon coming away as the top nominee with 15 noms including Best Animated Feature alongside Despicable Me, Tangled, The Illusionist and Toy Story 3.
Of course, you should probably note that Walt Disney Pictures withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood earlier this year with Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull telling Variety, "After more than a year of discussions with the Asifa board, we have regretfully decided to withdraw from the organization and no longer participate in the annual Annie Awards... We believe there is an issue with the way the Annies are judged, and have been seeking a mutually agreeable solution with the board. Although some initial steps have been taken, the board informed us that no further changes would be made to address our concerns."

Cartoon Brew has debuted the list of the thirty-three films up for consideration in the Best Animated Short category for the upcoming 2011 Oscars and I have done my very best to find a video for each and every one. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything for Rao Heidmets's Inherent Obligations or Don Hertzfeldt's Wisdom Teeth so if anyone out there can help find video for those either let me know in the comments or shoot me an email.
Otherwise, spend some time over the next three pages to preview some really cool videos. I had a chance to preview a few of them while putting this article together, but have yet to check them all out. So let me know which ones are your favorites and which ones don't really do it for you.

All over the exclusive Michael Jackson gloves in the world won't be of much use to you without music to move them to. That's not an issue with "Michael Jackson: The Experience" after today, though, because Ubisoft has shared the complete lists of Mj tunes that are slated for playability when it comes out for the Wii, PSP and Nintendo DS on November 25 and the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with Move and Kinect support in early 2011.
A total of 27 tracks made the cut for "The Experiece," which is enough for a double disc greatest hits collection, but not overly generous in the scheme of music titles. Ubisoft may just be banking on the overall difficulty level of the moves required to play this game being hard enough to take as much time to conquer as the average dance game. They are all Michael Jackson songs, though, as you can see:

For Dancing with the Stars's 200th episode, celebrities from past seasons rejoined the cast and either mentored team dances, or sat in with the panel and judged one of the new contestants. (Did you see our girl Erin Andrews sitting with Evan Lysacek and Jake Pavelka?) Sixth-season winner Kristi Yamaguchi helped coach three of the remaining dancers in a swanky routine set to Michael Jackson's "Working Day and Night," which would've been an innocent task if it didn't seem like she purposely picked the worst team ever.

Toy Story 3 Quick Thoughts:
I feel as if I have now seen Toy Story 3 the way it was meant to be seen... in 2D. The fact these films are released in theaters in 3D with a massive marketing blitz and then delivered to Blu-ray and DVD with absolutely no mention of 3D is proof positive no film needs or benefits from 3D. Is anyone going to argue Toy Story 3 is less of a film in 2D? Based on the marketing of the theatrical release one would expect the studio to feel that way, but good luck getting them to trash the cash cow that is the DVD and Blu-ray release of one of 2010's biggest films. Best of all, this film doesn't need gimmicks to prove it's great, because it's just that... great.
I'm not going to go too in-depth on the film itself because I think...

"Dancing with the Stars" celebrated its 200th episode on Monday night, November 1, and challenged its remaining contestants to perform an iconic dance from the show's history vault as well as to compete in a team. Coming out sizzling after both of performances was "The Boy Is Mine" hitmaker Brandy.
The 31-year-old continued to impress the judges with a foxtrot number to "Fever". Len Goodman dubbed it "the most fantastic foxtrot all season," while Bruno Tonioli described it "sizzling with sex" and Carrie Ann Inaba called it elegant and beautiful both in character and in technicality. Guest judge Gilles Marini chimed in, "I felt goosebumps all over my body. That performance was unreal!"
With all the praises from the judges, Brandy collected a score of 37. The individual dance number wasn't the only one she delivered on the special night. Joining forces with Kurt Warner and Jennifer Grey in a team coached by former champion Apolo Ohno,...

While they're perpetuating popular hardcore franchises like "Splinter Cell" and "Assassins' Creed" on the Xbox 360 and PS3, Ubisoft's quietly established a successful micro-niche of choreography dance games on the Wii. "Just Dance"--the first of these games--emerged as a best-seller when it came out last year and followed by "Dance on Broadway" this year, which gave players the chance to do routines from classic musicals "Guys & Dolls" and "Hair." Now those titles are being joined by "Michael Jackson The Experience."
The game lets players dance (and sing, in the PS3 and Xbox versions) to the late superstar's choreography. I had a chance to check out the Wii version of "Mjte," the baby brother of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 offerings. Those games have been delayed, leaving the Wii game the only one still scheduled to arrive this holiday. (There's also a handheld version on the Nintendo DS, which plays very similarly...

DVD and Blu-ray details have been revealed for both Toy Story 3 and the Cars spin-off set Mater's Tall Tales. While a few things you might expect to see are missing (there's no DVD short on Toy Story 3, for example) there are a few possible good features, like the first look at Cars 2. UpcomingPixar pulled these features from Amazon. First up are the DVD and basic Blu-ray features for Toy Story 3, then the Blu-ray exclusive features for the same film. After that, you'll find the features on Mater's disc. All releases hit on November 2. One of the weirdest things to come out E3 this year was Ubisoft's surprise announcement that they'd be releasing a Michael Jackson game for the Xbox 360 Kinect motion-sensing camera.
This week, the Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany marks another occasion for companies to trumpet the next stage of their marketing messages. It's basically a German E3 that services all of the Euro nations. Given that the King of Pop was planning his comeback tour across the pond, it's fitting that Ubisoft's chosen Gamescom as the next place to reveal a tiny bit more about "Michael Jackson The Experience."
Their virtual tribute to the Gloved One will involve technology that projects the player onscreen into a simulated stage. You'll be learning the same choreography used by Mj and his dancers, as well as singing along to his impressive solo back catalogue.
And that leads us to the most important aspect...

With the release of "Toy Story 3," the toys were definitely back in town to the tune of nearly 0 million. The biggest animated movie of the year is being released on Blu-ray and DVD in November.
"Toy Story 3" is heading home on November 2nd in standard DVD-only sets, as well as special Blu-ray editions. A 2-Disc Blu-ray edition and a "combo pack" featuring the 2-Disc Blu-rays, DVD, and Digital Copy editions of the movie will both be available, as well as a special "gift set" edition to be announced later.
The adventures of Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, and Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, continued in "Toy Story 3" as their owner Andy is all grown up and getting ready to head to college. Day And Night
Directed by Teddy Newton
Don’t be getting the name of this short confused with the future box office hit Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz… This probably has a lot more credibility, but I’m not judging, of course.
Day and Night sees the tale of two blob shaped characters with the adorable Disney eyes and movement giving away their personality. But what’s different about these little critters is that they express themselves through nature’s noises and images. With a black screen and only these two characters showing how they feel through, for example, images of ducks quacking to show laughter, the imagination gone into this is incredible.
It’s completely an original idea and stands miles ahead from the other loveable Pixar Shorts we so look forward to when we go and watch a new Disney film.

Apparently on a rampage of releasing goodies, Pixar, on top of releasing early Sunnyside Daycare art yesterday, has dropped a fun Easter Egg involving their latest short-form masterpiece that ran in front of Toy Story 3. The short Day and Night stars two characters who are essentially windows into the same world, only one shows that world during the day, the other night. The two meet and constantly try to outdo each other, each showing off activities or events that make one time of day better than the other. In the image below (found on their Facebook page), Pixar shows off its Disney bona fides by fully referencing the classic 101 Dalmatians for the drive-in scene. Not many beyond the large group of somewhat creepy Disneyphiles would have caught on to something like this, so it.s cool that they let us in on their little secret. You.ll notice that...

Here’s a nice little Easter egg from the short which sites in front of Toy Story 3, called Day and Night.
If you’ve not seen Day and Night, it’s rather a hard one to explain but basically has two characters who are have translucent bodies, one shows all things day, and one all things night. When they meet, they show one another the highlights of what it’s like to be a day, and a night! At one point, Day watches an open air , night-time cinema and Pixar have released a still frame fmo the short which shows a bunch of Cars (or Cars 2 in this case as a nod to their movie coming out next year) watching a film.
Pixar have revealed (on their official Facebook page) that the film they are watching is another nod to the same TV show that the 101 Dalmatians watched back...

This Sunday July 18 at 10pm, Monday at 7 and Wednesday at 10:15, we’re playing a film called Daddy Longlegs. You may not have heard of it. That’s ok. You’re here now, and you can thank us after you see this film that has been wowing audiences at the prestigious Cannes, Sundance, and Vienna film festivals. It’s a remarkably powerful and beautiful film, the kind of wonderful piece of art that comes to the cinema once every few years. This limited, Austin exclusive engagement could be your only chance to see what many are calling the best film of the year.
The film centers on a father, played by underground filmmaker Ronald Bronstein, who has a few weeks visitation time with his two sons. Michael Phillips for the Los Angeles Times tries to describe the character: “Scrambling through his own life like a human incarnation of Godard’s Breathless,...

Well, guys, I finally saw Toy Story 3 — right on time as usual. Of course I loved it, and of course I had to remove my 3-D glasses twice while bawling as Andy said goodbye, and of course I had a nightmare wherein my beloved yet physically terrifying and possibly Nsfw baby doll, ‘Carwie,’ had developed a terrorist agenda similar to Big Baby’s. What I didn’t expect was that I would love the Pixar short shown before Toy Story 3, “Day & Night,” even more than TS3.

Anyone who’s seen Toy Story 3 knows that it opens -- as Pixar films typically do -- with a delightful animated short film. This one is called “Day and Night,” and it’s a personification of, unsurprisingly, “day” and “night” as vaguely human-shaped blobs moving about the natural world. Day, for instance, wakes up in the morning and takes a deep breath, and we see that as wind blowing through trees. It’s pretty earthy (no pun intended): As Day has a morning pee, we see and hear a rushing brook. The juxtapositions of nature and what we would consider human behavior is surprising and amusing and unexpected... Until there comes a moment when Day gets all wound up at the sight of a girl in a bikini sunbathing (it being a bright sunny day and all: this is the kind of thing Day might expect to see...

About: When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other's unique qualities--and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world—the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective. Running time: 6 minutes Teddy Newton (Director): Newton came to Pixar in July of 2000 to work on Pixar’s sixth feature film, “The Incredibles,” and has since contributed his considerable character design skills to many of Disney•Pixar’s award-winning feature and short films, including “Ratatouille,” “Your Friend the Rat” and “Presto.” He was also instrumental in the creation of the End Titles of “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” and is frequently cast as a voice in Disney•Pixar films, including the role...

Toy Story 3 Directed by: Lee Unkrich Written by: Michael Arndt, John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich Starring: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris Sequels, remakes and reboots... like it or not, this is the stuff that summer movies are made of. Fortunately, no matter how tired and formulaic things might get, there has always been one thing we could count on to keep our spirits up: a new movie from Pixar. After 15 years, they are still the one company that has never really put out a bad movie, never failed to exceed expectations, and never stopped challenging themselves to push animated movies to new heights. But what do you do when Pixar suddenly decides to join the pack and start churning out sequels like everyone else? You pay to see it anyway, that's what you do. Although there has...

As I entered a random Midtown IMAX theater earlier tonight I noticed a gaggle of teenaged kids sitting behind me. Usually I take that as a cue to use my tune-out powers, but as I sat there various bits and pieces of their conversation pricked up my ears.
“So what’s this about?”
“Who’s that character again?”
“You haven’t seen the first or second movies?”
My god. These kids were 16. Which meant they weren’t even alive when the first Toy Story came out. I was. Which meant I was old. And so there I sat, a geriatric old crank, depressed and alone as the lights dimmed in the theater. And then Toy Story 3 started playing. And I was a kid again.
Well, that’s not entirely how it went; Pixar always starts their films with a fantastic short, and Day and Night is no exception to that rule.
