CineSavant poaches on Greenbriar Picture Shows territory with a quick slideshow of photos from New Yawk, New Yawk, where once upon a time, any old film release might get a gigantic ‘your name in lights’ opening on the Great White Way.
This photo idea won’t be a trend at CineSavant, but it is a welcome break. It came about because long-time correspondent ‘B’ wanted to assure me that some movies I had described as marginal, actually opened big in New York. To prove to me that the Louis De Rochemont social issue movie Lost Boundaries wasn’t a micro-release seen by nearly nobody (which seems to be the fate of so many pictures today), “B” sent along this color photo of the gigantic electric billboard at the Astor Theater, presumably in early July of 1949.

Laurie Metcalf will give one televised acceptance speech, at least according to our latest Independent Spirit Awards predictions. While Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) has decimated the field since the televised awards started and is the favorite to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, our odds still have the “Lady Bird” star beating her for the Spirit Award.
Metclaf, the predicted champ since nominations were announced in November, holds an 8/13-odd lead over Janney (3/2 odds). None of the other nominees, Holly Hunter (“The Big Sick”), Lois Smith (“Marjorie Prime”) and Taliah Lennice Webster (“Good Time”), are predicted to win.
See Best Supporting Actress predictions: Who could beat Allison Janney at the Oscars? [Poll]
Metcalf’s tender, subtle performance in a film by indie darling Greta Gerwig checks a lot of boxes, but Spirit Awards voters also have no problem rubber-stamping an Oscar frontrunner if they’re on the shortlists. In 2014, all four...

L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse announced Monday that it has canceled plans to produce playwright-filmmaker Neil Labute’s play “Fat Pig,” which had been scheduled to begin performances this spring. The Geffen instead announced plans to mount the world premiere of actress-turned-playwright Amanda Peet’s “Our Very Own Carlin McCullough,” with performances to begin this summer. The move follows the decision by Off Broadway’s nonprofit McC Theater to end its longtime relationship with Labute and cancel an upcoming production of his new play “Reasons to Be Pretty Happy,” which had been scheduled to premiere this summer. Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) has been unstoppable on the circuit since the televised awards shows began, flipping the script on critical darling Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”). Metcalf is still giving chase to Janney for the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA and Oscar, but there will be one place she’ll prevail, according to our latest predictions: the Independent Spirit Awards.
Metcalf has 1/2 odds over Janney’s 5/2 odds, with seven Experts, three Editors and 18 of our Top 24 Users, who scored the best last year, picking the once and future “Roseanne” star. They’re both well ahead of “The Big Sick”’s Holly Hunter (50/1 odds), “Marjorie Prime”’s Lois Smith (66/1 odds) and “Good Time”’s Taliah Lennice Webster (100/1 odds), none of whom earned Oscar nominations.
Indeed, Metcalf’s quieter but no less superb performance is more in line with what the Indie Spirits usually recognizes. “Lady Bird” also has four nominations to “I,...

Every year needs a good action comedy, and that's just what we got with The Hitman's Bodyguard.
Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson make for a perfect pair in this film where Jackson plays an assassin who is being protected by one of the world's former best bodyguards (Reynolds). However, these two have a past, making their newfound friendship nearly impossible.
Here are five reasons to see this year's hit action-comedy, The Hitman's Bodyguard!
The Location
The Hitman's Bodyguard takes place across Europe, but most notably in Amsterdam. Watching Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson banter, fight, and go on crazy car and boat chases is already awesome, but set among the beautiful canals of this city, it's even better.

Mother-daughter relationships have always been the stuff of great drama. And the Oscars are no exception. Three decades ago the “Moonstruck” acting duo Olympia Dukakis and Cher both won gold for playing a strong-willed New York Italian mother and her feisty daughter. Six years later, as a mute Scottish teacher and her de facto interpreter in New Zealand, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin repeated that twofer triumph with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”
Onscreen mother-daughter conflict has resulted in other dual Academy Award nominations: selfless Barbara Stanwyck tricked Anne Shirley into marrying rich in tearjerker “Stella Dallas” (1937); Meryl Streep’s big mouth inspired a rebellious Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County” (2013); Piper Laurie was literally crucified by Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” (1976). At the start of this decade, Mo’Nique won an Oscar portraying the sexually abusive parent of fellow “Precious” nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Back in 1984, both Shirley MacLaine and...

If you’ve been wondering what fan favourite actor Steven Yeun has been up to since the infamous and brutal death of his character on The Walking Dead, wonder no more. Here he is, gloriously and deservedly front and centre in a new batch of photos for an upcoming action-horror movie about workplace frustrations, and how to work them out. It’s called Mayhem and is directed by Joe Lynch (Everly), from a script written by Matias Caruso (in his feature length debut).
If the pics below put you in mind of 2016’s The Belko Experiment, you’re not incorrect. Both focus their action around violence between people trapped in an office environment for an extended period of time. However, there is one important difference.

This season of Game of Thrones seems to be a bit polarizing from fans. On one hand, you have fans who Love the fact that they’re getting so many payoffs over so short a period of time. After six seasons of dedicated viewing, and hours upon hours of devotion to dozens of characters, it’s nice to see them all pay off in a meaningful way. Then, you also have some fans who understandably think that the pacing has gotten ridiculous. Events that would normally take a full season are now happening within an episode, and some argue it takes away from the meditative pacing of the book and the first five or six seasons.

All right, gang, I’m going to need for you to bear with me as I take an abrupt left turn for this month’s column. I’ve been wanting to do a John Carpenter movie for a while now, but the problem is that he doesn’t have many “B-sides” that people haven’t talked about ad nauseum. Our very own Patrick Bromley recently covered one of his more relatively obscure entries with Prince of Darkness, and Scott Drebit gave his take on that one with the William Shatner mask. So, to find new territory, I had to go back to 1979, a year after Carpenter released his breakthrough masterpiece, but just before he churned out a series of classics in the early ’80s that would cement his legacy as one of the greatest horror directors of all time. It’s at this tipping point that Carpenter directed a made-for-tv...

There are few directors who are as concerned with preserving and enhancing the cinematic experience the way Christopher Nolan is.
Constantly improving and finding new ways to tell stories, with Dunkirk, Nolan made the film using IMAX cameras for about 70% of the shoot (which is more than nearly any film before it).
Nolan's World War II film follows allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France who are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during an intense battle.
We're super pumped to see Dunkirk, especially knowing the visual spectacle it'll be. Our very own Tanner Zee visited IMAX to learn more about their technology and the immersive experience that they provide.

Eyes have been resting on Tom Cruise’s upcoming film The Mummy for some time now. Ever since Universal announced that they’d be using the film as a launchpad for a shared universe of films, it’s been a project that carried the weight of more than just your average blockbuster. It carried the name of the beloved baddies that graced the silver screen back in the 1930s.
The film hits theaters tomorrow evening in the U.S., and as of this morning, the embargo has officially lifted for the film, and the consensus is…not great. Sad, I know. We always hope that when a universe like this gets kicked off that they do so on the wrong foot, but as of this writing, the majority of critics don’t seem to be on board with what Universal offered in this particular outing.

While it was always unlikely that Chris Pine would ever show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that he’s got a starring role in Wonder Woman, it’s probably safe to say that he’s now going to be DC exclusive for the rest of his career. That’s because while doing press for Patty Jenkins’ aforementioned film, the actor used the opportunity to voice his thoughts on Avengers: Infinity War, taking a small but gutty jab at the blockbuster.
Admittedly, what he said isn’t going to cause too much of a fuss, but it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t agree with the route Marvel’s headed down. Speaking to Screen Slam, the actor praised Jenkins for being able to inject a sense of humanity and empathy into the film, as that’s not something you really see in comic book movies these days. comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of May 14, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
The numbers are in, and it’s only mildly surprising — not necessarily in the order in which the films placed in for the weekend, but in how much lower the openings were for two films that opened this weekend. But before we get into that, let’s take a look at this weekend’s victor.
In a move that surprises no one, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has taken first place yet again. Given that its biggest competition were another iteration of King Arthur and a mid-budged comedy, there was little holding it back. It fell an admirable 57% from its first weekend, taking in $63 million. Pretty solid numbers, and bringing the film nearly to $250 million domestically. The film has nearly hit $650 million worldwide,...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of April 30, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
It’s no huge surprise, but Fate of the Furious came out on top yet again for its third weekend in a row in North America. The only films it was up against were the comedy How to be a Latin Lover, the new tech-thriller The Circle, and the indie magic-centric film Sleight. Given the mass appeal of the Furious series, none of these other films stood much of a chance. The film only dropped 49.5% from its second weekend, taking in $19.4 million, adding up to its current cume of $1.06 billion worldwide.

Back in 1989, Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone starred in a little gem titled Tango & Cash. In less than two weeks, we'll see Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2... And Stallone in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2... Do the math! I'll admit, every time I write about Stallone in relation to Vol. 2, I can't help but bring up Tango & Cash. Every time. It now appears that I am not alone in my thought process.
Our very own Nancy Tapia attended a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 junket, where Stallone was asked if he lobbied to share any on-screen time with his Tango & Cash co-star, Kurt Russell:
"As for Tango and Cash, listen, I can't stand Kurt Russell, so if you keep him away from me the happier I will be. So, I lobbied to stay out of his scenes. If you believe that then I have...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is only two weeks away from release! The sequel is again written and directed by James Gunn, who recently also announced he would return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Though Gunn has never directed a sequel before, he did write both 2002's live-action Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monster Unleashed. I am unable to speak to the quality of that sequel though, as I've never seen it.
Our very own Nancy Tapia attended a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 junket, where James Gunn was asked about his approach to sequels in a world brimming with many that are uninspired retreads of the first:
"I wanted to continue the film from the first movie. You know, so many sequels are not good. The primary reason is, in studying them, seemed to be that so many of them just kind of do the...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of April 02, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend turned out to be quite the head-to-head between two family friendly assailants. After two weeks of being large and in charge, Beauty and the Beast lost out on first place at the domestic box office to Dreamworks’ The Boss Baby. It was a close match, but the latter film came out on top oh-so-barely with its haul of $49 million over Beauty and the Beast’s admirable $47.5 million in its third weekend.
First let’s talk about The Boss Baby. Our own box office guru, the Weekend Warrior, predicted a softer opening at around $36.6 million, which is higher than some other projections. Yet, even he fell short by a substantial margin. Despite the negative reviews, The Boss Baby seems to be off to quite the solid start.

This weekend in theatres, Dax Shepard and Michael Pena star in the new comedy Chips!
The movie is based on the original 70's TV show of the same name and is about Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) who have just joined the California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles but for very different reasons.
We are hoping these two have the same dynamic and hilarious chemistry that Bill Hader and Seth Rogen had in Superbad.
Our very own Tanner Zipchen interviewed the Chips stars in NYC -- so watch the fun interview below and check out Chips when it hits Cineplex theatres this Friday the 24th!

This weekend sees the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year. Sure, we get handful of big superhero blockbusters every year now, but with Beauty and the Beast, we are seeing a remake of a beloved classic that many are, surprisingly enough, rather optimistic about. Usually, remakes like this are met with nothing more than pessimism, but given the strength in casting and the strong visuals, it seems like many are willing to bypass their normal jaded nature — this writer included.
The enthusiasm sure seems to be carrying over to the box office, as evidenced by Thursday’s numbers. According to Box Office Mojo, the film took in $16.3 million in its Thursday previews alone. For comparison, Batman v Superman took in $27.7 million (and ended its opening weekend with $166 million), and The Hunger Games took in $19.7 million (and ended its weekend with $152 million).
So what does this...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of March 12, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw Kong: Skull Island sprint out of the gates with a solid $61 million opening. This defied certain projections, which saw the film taking the cake in the $40-$50 million range. Our very own Edward Douglas, however, was much closer to the mark in his own projection of $58.3 million (though his initial projection was even closer, at $61.6 million). Given how much lower projections were, this is quite the auspicious start for the film, but it’s important to note that it’s still a far cry under Godzilla’s own $93 million opening, and that film was made for $20 million less, and it went on to only net a profit of around $52 million.

Our very own Edward Douglas was able to catch an advanced viewing of Logan, and according to his review, it is fantastic. One thing that I did wonder, were how the post-credit scenes would be done, and if there were any at all. The critics did not get to witness any bonus scene but Steve "Frosty" Weintraub at Collider is not only giving our Joseph "Jammer" Medina a run for his nickname, but he also has confirmed that there will be a post-credit scene at some point during the credits.
"While the version of the film screened for critics had no such thing, over the past few days word has begun to spread that Logan might have a scene added after the credits when it hits theaters. Forget about the rumors…I can confirm it’s true. When Logan is released on March 3rd it’ll have a post-credits scene.

Koei Tecmo has outlined some post-launch plans for Team Ninja’s action RPG Nioh today, including providing tentative release dates for new difficulty and player-vs-player modes.
As reported by Siliconera, those who are currently finding William’s adventures in Japan to be a little too easy will have new challenges to confront by way of a higher difficulty level for existing missions as part of a free update in March. Following that, in April, a dedicated PvP feature will arrive, finally enabling players to decide between themselves who has crafted the most powerful character build.
While there’s currently no competitive component available as part of Nioh‘s existing suite of multiplayer options, players are able to invite each other to their respective worlds in order to indulge in a spot of co-op. For all intents and purposes,...

Our favorite redhead had a few things to say last night at the 2017 British Academy Film Awards. Now let's hold up, this will not be "spoil Game of Thrones time," however we can confirm her future role in X-Men. Our very own Mfr pointed this out a few days ago in one of his pieces, but this is solid confirmation. Sophie Turner had this to say.
“We’re about to start shooting the next X-Men, we’ve just finished shooting Season 7 of [Game of] Thrones, and I’ve got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to Season 8.”
We all think that the next iteration of X-Men will indeed be a Dark Phoenix story, which hopefully will be done properly. This is something that interests most of us here immensely, especially me. So will this upcoming movie get murdered like X-Men 2 or X-Men 3? I highly doubt it.
