France TV Distribution has acquired “Furcy,” an epic film inspired by the true story of a slave in a French colony who was able to achieve legal emancipation prior to the definitive abolition of slavery.
“Furcy” is directed by Abd Al Malik, whose debut feature “May Allah Bless France!” won the Discovery prize at Toronto Film Festival and was nominated for a Cesar Award.
The part of Furcy is played by Makita Samba, who had a lead role in Jacques Audiard’s “Paris 13th District,” which competed at Cannes. The rest of the cast comprises Romain Duris (“The Animal Kingdom”), Ana Girardot (“The House”) and Vincent Macaigne (“Bonnard: Pierre & Marthe”). The script was written by Etienne Comar (“Django”), based on the book by Mohammed Aissaoui.

French film exports generated 91.4M euros ($103.6M) in 2021, a 5.5% increase on the previous year’s provisional figures, while admissions were up 8% to 14.8M. Comparatively, French films within France sold 39.2M tickets during the year. The figures were announced during the annual Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema which is taking place in Paris this week — one of the rare international gatherings in the current landscape that’s being held as a physical event.
Today’s numbers are provisional estimates and will be higher when they are trued up in the fall. For example, when originally announced in January 2021, the 2020 receipts were 86.6M euros, ultimately jumping to 101.7M euros when recalculated in November; a decline of over 60% versus 2019.
Interestingly, China in 2021 overtook Russia to become the leading overseas market for French titles in terms of admissions, partly owing to the fact that its cinemas recovered more quickly from Covid than elsewhere. Over...

Several Parisians try to figure out life, love and sex in the moodily shot black-and-white drama Paris, 13th District (Les Olympiades: Paris 13e). While the logline might sound like quite a few other French films out there, the names behind this project are perhaps a little more unexpected. In fact, The Sisters Brothers and A Prophet director Jacques Audiard has turned three short graphic novels from Sacramento-born, Brooklyn-based illustrator Adrian Tomine into a single feature, adapting their U.S. setting to the unusual Parisian location of his title, a mixed neighborhood full of 1970s high-rises.

“Overlord” is one of the best video game movies ever made, and it’s not even based on a video game.
Filmmakers have been struggling for decades to adapt an actual video game story into a great movie, but many films have already successfully adapted the storytelling style of video games to the big screen. Take a look at the checkpoint gameplay mechanics of “Run Lola Run,” and the point-and-click problem solving of “Cop Car.” Consider the daredevil side scrolling of “District B13,” and the destructive fighting-game avatars of “Colossal.”
And now, check out “Overlord,” the ultimate Nazi zombie movie. The genre goes back at least as far as Ken Wiederhorn’s “Shock Waves,” which starred Peter Cushing as a mad scientist building an undead reich on an uncharted island, but it really came to life (pun intended) in video games. By the time the “Wolfenstein” games introduced Mecha-Hitler as a level boss,...

"Watching someone take everything from you, it turns you into somebody else." Stx Entertainment has debuted the first trailer for an action movie titled Peppermint, which is currently set to open in theaters in September at the beginning of the fall season. Peppermint is the latest from French director Pierre Morel and is about a fierce momma who becomes an assassin. Peppermint is a revenge story centering on a young mother who finds herself with nothing to lose, and now going to take from her rivals the very life they stole from her. Jennifer Garner stars, with John Ortiz, John Gallagher Jr., Juan Pablo Raba, Method Man, Tyson Ritter, and Annie Ilonzeh. This looks as expected from Morel - heavy on gritty action, a bit cheesy but still entertaining, and kind of badass. Here's the first trailer (+ teaser poster) for Pierre Morel's Peppermint, direct from Stx's YouTube: Peppermint is...

Exclusive: Deal marks company’s first foray into the action genre; film set to shoot in Athens in September.
Paris-based Memento Film International (Mfi) will kick-start sales at Cannes on UK director Jonathan English’s Athens-set action-thriller Dias, which is due to shoot in the Greek capital in September.
The film revolves around the city’s elite police motorbike force, the Dias, consisting of four-person squads travelling two-by-two on high-powered vehicles. The force was created in 2010 in response to a rise in petty and organised crime after the debt crisis threw the country into chaos.
The story will follow energetic young recruit Theo, who quickly becomes a pivotal member of the force as it presses on with its work of eradicating the city of violent crime gangs but in the end becomes their target too.

That resulting thud you hear is the disappointing opening weekend numbers for Allegiant, the third part of the four part adaptation of the Divergent trilogy. Its arrival coincides with Lionsgate’s release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 as a Blu-ray Combo Pack. The commercial demands that the final book of a series be broken into two films made sense for the final Harry Potter novel but certainly not for Mockingjay as witnessed by the poor critical reception Part 1 received in 2014.
Now we have the finale and while stronger, continues to lend credence to the argument it didn’t need to be two separate films (and the year’s wait, in retrospect, was probably a mistake).
The bloom may be off the Ya Dystopian rose as the films rushing to the screen in the wake of The Hunger Games’ well-deserved respect failed to measure up. What many of...

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

Whenever a franchise offers up its last installment, it’s a bittersweet moment. Fans gather to rejoice in the completion of a story while also mourning this last momentous occasion shared this way. “Mockingjay Part 2” marks the end of “The Hunger Games” as a theater experience.
Fans are going to the movie, it’s currently winning the box office race, but compared to the previous movies, it’s not grossing as highly as the others. It’s not for lack of quality, nor for lack of excitement on the part of fans. Thanksgiving weekend isn’t quite over, and I think surprises are still in store with regard to those numbers.
Certainly, there are going to be people who won’t want to go see “Mockingjay Part 2” right away because they know you can only see it for the first time once. It’s the kind of movie you need...

This is Part 4 of a 4 part series leading up to the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, each looking at an individual film in the series and it’s legacy. Read Part 3 here.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is angry, dark, and hopeful. This is the end, the final chapter in a franchise that has worked so hard to make its world one of consequence. The Hunger Games series works with ideas of humanity, violence, politics and skepticism. Mockingjay-Part 2 brings the rebellion that has been promised since Katniss pulled her trick with the berries in the first film. It offers a conclusion, a resolution. What it doesn’t do, though, is make things easy.
Mockingjay – Part 2 is message moviemaking. It’s interested in its ideas more than it is in its entertainment value.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2
Written by Danny Strong and Jon Kilik
Directed by Francis Lawrence
U.S.A., 2015
The anticipation that comes with the release of the final installment of a massively popular and beloved film franchise is always palpable. The Return of the King, Revenge of the Sith (Star Wars fans, at the very least, were still excited in 2005, and they are numerous), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2; each franchise had the respective studio behind it bombastically announcing the arrival of the final chapter. How would the storyline conclude? Where would characters that audiences had come to love see their journeys end? Here we are once again, this time with the concluding episode of the Hunger Games series, one that has, it should be noted, proven to be refreshingly consistent with respect to the quality of its entries.

So here we are. After four years, Katniss Everdeen is ready to hang up her bow as The Hunger Games series comes to an end (for the time being at least, if all those rumours of sequels and prequels are to be believed). It’s being quite the ride, with the success of the first movie igniting Hollywood’s current obsession with Young Adult adaption, as well as setting Jennifer Lawrence on the path to becoming a bona fide star. But what of Mockingjay Part 2? Is this a fitting send off for the uber popular franchise? The answer is, mostly, yes. As was laid out for us at the end of Mockingjay Part 1, Panem is in grip of all out war, with the rebels of District 13 on the verge of raiding the Capitol and putting an end to the reign of despot President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss is still being used a figurehead,...

The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games. At a recent press conference taken place on halloween, this is what director Francis Lawrence and the cast had to say about their final chapter of the Hunger Games saga.
Jennifer how was it playing Katniss for the last time and Josh how was it playing duel Peetas?
Jennifer Lawrence: I feel I had two final endings with Katniss.

To Kill a Mockingjay: Lawrence Brings Ya Franchise to Inevitable Denouement
The last tony gasp of Suzanne Collins’ celebrated Hunger Games franchise is steered, at long last, to a close courtesy of director Francis Lawrence, who has been responsible for three film entries in the quartet. In the tradition of several other series, the final novel was split into two separate films released a year apart in order to capitalize on the popular momentum of the property, a trick which only does a severe disservice to the longevity of this Ya dystopia.
Familiar and recycled themes and ideas aside, it is one of the more moderately intelligent mainstream machines, but that’s not saying much. While the memory of 2014’s Mockingjay: Part 1 is left in the hazy dust of its unnecessarily elongated exposition, the final sequence fares better as a piece of entertainment thanks to some minor moments of tension...

Julianne Moore, Oscar winner and part-time president of District 13, appeared on The Late Show on Tuesday night to finally settle the debate over whether or not her red hair has rendered her soulless. "How do you feel about the myth or the rumors that gingers have no souls?" Stephen Colbert jokingly asked. Julianne revealed, "I have complicated feelings about it, about being a redhead in general. Because people have expectations that somehow your hair has something to do with your personality. You're either feisty or you're sexy." Although the whereabouts of Julianne's soul still remain unknown, watch the rest of the video above, and check out some gorgeous photos of her at the Chanel Mademoiselle Privé event!

Together, they leave District 13 to liberate the citizens of war-torn Panem and assassinate President Snow, who's obsessed with destroying Katniss. What lies ahead are mortal traps, dangerous enemies and moral choices that will ultimately determine the future of millions.
We made it, we finally reached the last chapter in the Hunger Games cinematic saga. Was it worth the trip? Well, that would depend on how invested you are in the story. For someone with a mild (at best) investment in the series, this film felt like a task in patience.

Panem is at war. Four movies deep and at last, Lionsgate’s Ya franchise is on the verge of hitting its crescendo with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and today’s all-new TV clip showcases that it has no intention to go out on a whimper.
Arriving in tandem with a slew of new images for the conclusive sequel, today’s teaser is designed to ramp up the core conflict between Jennifer Lawrence’s returning heroine Katniss Everdeen and President Snow (Donald Sutherland), the power-mongering tyrant she’s destined to overthrow. From grand sweeping shots of Panem on the brink to the more heartfelt moments between Katniss and Prim, Mockingjay – Part 2 also harbors a lot of emotional beats amid its parade of CG-laden effects, and we’re hoping that shines through in the final feature.

One of the smartest and most enthralling Sf film series ever breaks more new ground as it ends on notes as emotional and provocative as they are explosive. I’m “biast” (pro): big Sf geek; love the book series; love Jennifer Lawrence (and much of the rest of the cast); crave female-centered stories
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (and I love it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There are many ways in which the Hunger Games series of movies has been groundbreaking. It has given us a female world-changing heroine in the mold of the countless boys and men Hollywood has cast in such a role, and showed the caricature up by depicting her as more human than most of them: more conflicted, more unsure, more afraid yet also more brave for overcoming all that… and also simultaneously more principled and more selfish.

With the recent cinematic release of the latest installment of The Hunger Games series, Mockingjay- Part 1, it seems to be the perfect time to look into some of the more predominant themes and allegorical references in this wildly popular franchise. Being that these films have been adapted from Suzanne Collin’s trilogy of bestselling novels geared toward the younger adult crowd, they have come to be some of the most anticipated blockbusters of the last few years, bringing in massive box-office success. Despite the well-defined financial achievement and reverberant hype of the saga, the series of films, soon to conclude with next year’s Mockingjay- Part 2, has not done particularly well with critics. Some reviews suggest that the Battle Royale storyline turned moody propaganda display is becoming rather thin, gratuitous as well as underdeveloped. Yet what does seem to keep audiences returning to the theatres, year after year? It most...

This is Part 3 of a 4 part series leading up to the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, each looking at an individual film in the series and it’s legacy. Read Part 1 here, and Part 2 here.
The Hunger Games series is interested in human costs. This series is devoted to the idea that the horrors it depicts should be felt by both characters and viewers. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire create a sense of violence as it actually is; quick, brutal, and traumatizing. Mockingjay – Part 1 is interested in what can be done with these moments of violence. It’s interested in what it means to take human moments and repackage them, turning them into tools.
Mockingjay – Part 1‘s premise is full of this kind of aggressive re-branding. It suggests that Katniss, who has now become a figurehead for revolution, must take to the nation’s airwaves to...

After a long wait, the final part of The Hunger Games is here. Will Katniss and co get a proper send-off?
This review contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
Brace yourself. The end of The Hunger Games is nigh, and it’s gonna hurt like hell.
At the end of Mockingjay Part 1, we left Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) tearfully watching her sometime lover Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) thrash against his restraints. District 13 had rescued the captive rebels from the Capitol, but weeks of torture had left them weak, confused, and even dangerous. President Coin (Julianne Moore) was gearing up her army for a new strike against the tyrannical President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) regime, but actually winning the war looked like an impossible dream.
It was a bummer of a place to leave the story for a year, and it’s still a bummer when...

Lionsgate has released the first brief clip from the final instalment in the incredibly popular Hunger Games saga, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. In it, District 13’s symbol of rebellion, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), wows to cease all of the grand speeches and finally put an end of President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
She shares this information with Jena Malone’s Joanna Mason – a fan-favourite character who was largely absent from Mockingjay – Part 1, but is expected to play a much larger role in this final film.
Will Katniss and the rebels follow through with their plan? If you’ve read the book you know of course, but the rest of us have to wait until November 20th. In the meantime, you can have a read of the official synopsis below.

Analysis: The question on a lot of people’s minds going into Spectre will no doubt be “is it going to be as good as or better than Skyfall?” Skyfall was certainly an awesome Bond movie, but if there is one thing we can take away from oh say Quantum of Solace, it’s that we should take each Bond movie as a single experience and try not to compare them with each other. That’s what I do anyway and it really takes away from the expectations and makes for a more enjoyable time.

A new Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 trailer is out and shows Katniss' journey throughout the first three films. Take a look.
We are now less than a month away from the "Epic Finale" of the Hunger Games series. As such, the good people at Lionsgate wanted to give us a brief trailer encapsulating the journey we've been on over the last few years.
Toward the end, though is where the real meat of the trailer is. Officially this trailer is entitled, "Epic Finale". That's no mere flashy title. In the book, Mockinjay, the battle for the capital gets insane. So much happens and you're left shocked, in the end. From what I've seen from this trailer and its predessecor, Mockingjay Part 2 may just surpass what the book was able to accomplish.
Many people were unsatisfied with Mockingjay Part 1. Don't despair, though, that's much like how the book went. The first half was slower,...
