Rather typical of very early films
planktonrules2 July 2009
This film is part of a DVD set entitled "Treasures III"--a set of four DVDs all about social issues and reform. The fourth disk (where you'll find this one) is about ethnic issues in particular.

In the late 1800s into the beginning of the twentieth century, most films consisted of everyday events being recorded with a stationary camera. When seen today, most of these things look amazingly mundane. However, they do also provide us with a time capsule--where we can see what life was like a hundred or more years ago. Because of this, films like EMIGRANTS LANDING AT ELLIS ISLAND are important films historically speaking. Fun to watch for most? No. But still very important. Here all you see are emigrants (mostly women) debarking from a boat. The only other image in an initial shot of a ferry moving people about and according to the audio commentary, this was actually an ad for this service.

The Boat Now Arriving...
JoeytheBrit4 May 2009
This is a pretty rudimentary two-shot movie that neither succeeds or attempts to transmit the emotions of the huddled masses as they take their first steps on the land of the free. The first shot shows the boat on which they arrive pulling into the port, and you can see the emigrants lining the boat as they survey their new home. The second shot has the camera positioned directly in front of the exit point from which the travellers disembark. In all honestly, apart from their clothes, they could just as easily be alighting from the 5.32 from Kings Cross, but I guess that's a sign that the era of stage-managing factual scenes was still a few years in the future...

Immigrants Landing at Ellis Island (1903)

*** (out of 4)

Edison film showing various immigrants getting off a boat at Ellis Island (just like the title says). This is an interesting early short as it's certainly showing a part of history but the Edison Company certainly didn't go out of there way to do anything special with the film. The cinematography is pretty lazy but it's on mark with everything thing else out there around this time. The DVD lists this as being filmed on Thursday, July 9th. The DVD also mentions that both Frank Capra and Edward G. Robinson arrived at the same port about six weeks earlier.
