Brandon Harris — whose insightful, politically sagacious and ruefully funny blend of memoir and criticism has graced the pages of the New Yorker, n+1 and Filmmaker, where you’ll recognize him as a Contributing Editor — has just released his debut book, Making Rent in Bed-Stuy, a cultural memoir on neighborhoods, race, millennial culture and filmmaking. Appropriately, he has also programmed a series of relevant films this weekend at New York’s Metrograph Theater. Running through the 12th, the films include Spike Lee’s Crooklyn (next to Do the Right Thing my favorite 40 Acres joint, actually), Jay-z: Fade to Black, and Sebastián Silva’s […]...

It’s highly possible that you don’t know that Hillsong United exists. The band members themselves confess this in “Hillsong – Let Hope Rise” — a new concert-based documentary from director Michael John Warren (“Jay-z: Fade To Black”) — when guitarist Jad Gillies explains, “We’re the biggest band you’ve never heard of. My own neighbors have no idea what I did last night.” What Gillies “did last night,” to be clear, is sell out an arena like The Forum in Los Angeles. And before that, the Hollywood Bowl. And before that, the O2 Arena in London and other very large concert.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.
Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

American Horror Story: Coven Season 3 Episode 11: Protect The Coven
The battle between the witches and the witch hunters shook down in “Protect the Coven” and it was over before it started. Fiona (Jessica Lange) and Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) managed to arrange a meeting with Harrison Renard (Michael Cristopher) and his firm at a posh executive conference room. Sitting across from Renard and flanked by four of his goons, they offered the witches a 100-year truce with no hunting during that time – a laughable insult to the Supreme and her new bestie.
Their counter-offer of an indefinite cease-fire, plus mansion and private jet service were disregarded quicker than you can peel-and-eat a Louisiana crawfish, prompting the Axeman (Danny Huston) to make short work of the conference room. It was one of the goriest scenes you’ll see this winter–and it was such a guilty pleasure play out. Seriously,...

Usually weddings are the stuff of sweeps weeks and seasons finales. Not on last night's Nashville, where Teddy taking Peggy's hand in marriage was about as sentimental as Trace Adkins' hick-hop hit "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," probably because Teddy is a terrible mealy-mouthed bore and Peggy is an unsympathetic kook.
Not even Teddy seems excited about his nuptials. Making this even more of a headache for Nashville's fine mayor, he has to twist his own "daughter's" arm into providing musical entertainment at the reception (because it's hard to find musicians...

World War Z. Jurassic Park III. Seven. The Lion King. How were these and others originally planned to end?
The path from screenplay page to cinema screen is seldom a straight one, and it's frequently the case that a movie can change quite a lot during the process of production. Now and again, though, history throws out examples of movies that could have ended very differently.
For numerous reasons, the films featured here were all rewritten or reworked before they arrived in cinemas. Some endings were changed due to budget constraints. Others were down to the concerns of studio bosses.
In this selection, we've gone for endings that were written or storyboarded, but never shot in their entirety - last year, Nick brought us an exhaustive tour through 50 alternate endings, many of which were actually put before a camera.

Los Angeles -- Beyonce will be the halftime performer at next year's Super Bowl, we learned this week when the AP broke the news. This got me thinking about the multi-talented multi-hyphenate's movie performances. The R&B superstar has appeared in a lot of films over the past decade, with some decidedly high-profile roles. And while she shouldn't quit her day job just yet, she does have a radiant screen presence.
So here's a ranking of Beyonce's film work – although her greatest role of all may be that of the now-defunct Sasha Fierce persona she created to give herself the confidence to be wild and sexy on stage.
_ "Fade to Black" (2004): Admittedly, this choice is a bit of a cheat. Beyonce wasn't exactly acting here, per se. This was the documentary that captured the 2003 Madison Square Garden concert that was supposedly Jay-z's last. By the time the film came out,...

As was rumored, Imagine Entertainment partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer will film Jay-z’s Budweiser Made In America music festival, September 1-2 in Philadelphia. The feature will be released next year. Translation CEO Steve Stoute will be co-producing alongside Grazer and @radical.media, and Howard will direct. Jay-z headlines the festival and will share exec producer role with Paul Chibe, Anheuser–Busch’s U.S. Marketing vice president. The two-day festival will feature artists such as Pearl Jam, Run-dmc, Drake, Skrillex, Rick Ross, Miike Snow, Odd Future, and Janelle Monáe, all who speak to a new generation of fans. “This will not be a concert film; it’s a reflection of the fabric of what it means to be Made In America – what the festival represents, why Jay is doing it and how he relates to each artist,” Howard said in a statement. Grazer and Stoute previously collaborated in...

Although they are linked with Ridley Scott‘s American Gangster, the news that Ron Howardwould be directing a documentary on Jay-z was a bit peculiar. Nonetheless, things are moving ahead to capture the hip-hop icon at his Made in America music festival, which kicks off on September 1st in Philadelphia and includes acts like Pearl Jam, Passion Pit, Dirty Projects, Odd Future, Drake, Run-dmc, Skrillex, Rick Ross, Janelle Monáe, Chris Cornell and more.
More details are now coming together thanks to producer Brian Grazer. Speaking with Rolling Stone he added that the film will include may elements of the star’s personal journey, from “overcoming a rough upbringing” to “transforming himself into a successful rapper and businessman.” He said, “I think that’s what I’m gonna do. There’s sort of a creation element.” But it will still focus heavily on the music and the specific event, saying he...

"If you don't know my name, I'm not working hard enough." That's been Harlem rapper Donny Goines' mantra since 2006, when he first decided to pick up a microphone. His inspiration, as with so many other up-and-coming MCs, came from Jay-z. After watching his 2004 concert film Fade to Black (two years after it was initially released), he took on a reworked version of the name of famed novelist Donald Goines and hit the studio.
It may have taken him some years to get here, especially considering the pace at which new-gen rappers release music online, but he insists that he is in it for the long haul.

Clinty, Clint, Clint, Clint. Er, I should say, Mr. Eastwood. I owe you that respect. I have watched you over these many years, admired your work as an actor and been blown away by the films you've directed. From Play Misty for Me to A Fistful of Dollars to Two Mules for Sister Sarah; through all the Dirty Harry movies and even those goofy (sorta dumbass, but still kind of funny) "Right turn, Clyde," Every/Any Which Way... things, I have loved you. Your young scowl turned me on and let me believe that there was always someone out there, meaner than I was. I have marveled over artists' renderings of you and endured a boyfriend that probably loved you more than he did me. I even went on that twisty turn you took with Meryl Streep (Bridges of Madison Country) and trust me, that shit was weird. As the years have gone by,...
