A little too long
cfglos11113 November 2006
A very original concept and usually entertaining, but at 2 hours it was a bit too long and repetitive. It could have come in at 90 min., or 100 min. at the most. Nonetheless, a good effort and I would watch it again (aired on TV One). It shows the ins and outs and ups and downs of being a small businessman/black entrepreneur, both from the salon and the promoter perspectives. It appeared that the documentary was filmed in 2002-03 but did not get released until 2005. Getting the financing for this film may be the subject of another interesting documentary! I also found it odd that some of the models gave attitude about how their hair was being styled, etc. Unless you are Naomi, Kate Moss, etc., I can't see that A MODEL should dictate his/her look. As the name suggests, your role is to model/show SOMEONE ELSE'S WORK. In all, a unique and enjoyable effort.

Tangles and Locks

Warning: Spoilers
This film was an eye-opening journey into the fabulous world of black-hair shows. I had no idea how much blood sweat and tears went into hair shows such as this. I have a new found respect for the people who make hair into art. It is rare to find a film, such as this, that can make you laugh and cry at the same time. Phil Paul Call brought to life the passion of this industry through the use of his camera, but more importantly, his imagination and vision. As the film delves deeper into the lives of each participant, one cannot help but feel a deep connection to each character. You truly do not get the full meaning and understanding of this film unless you see it two or three times. Tangles and Locks is a pioneer film of many more to come and I look forward to the next Call production.
