Jon Hamm is getting his own Apple show — finally!
The Emmy-winning Mad Men grad, who previously “begged” Apple for a show of his own in a tongue-in-cheek ad for the streamer, will star in and exec produce the straight-to-series Apple drama Your Friends and Neighbors. The role marks Hamm’s first starring role in an ongoing drama series since AMC’s Mad Men wrapped its seven-season run in 2015.
Your Friends and Neighbors, based on an original idea by Jonathan Tropper (See, Warrior, Banshee), revolves around Coop (Hamm), a recently divorced hedge fund manager who, after being fired, resorts to stealing from the wealthy residents in his tony upstate New York suburb in order to keep his family’s lifestyle afloat. The petty crimes begin to reinvigorate him until he breaks into the wrong house at the wrong time.
Tropper will serve as showrunner and exec produce via his overall deal with Apple.

Freida Pinto took a break from her jury duties at the Red Sea Film Festival to talk to Variety about her career and her hopes for the future.
The Indian actor shot to world fame for her starring role in Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) and remains committed to the breadth of cinema. “I’ve always looked at cinema globally,” she tells Variety. “After ‘Slumdog,’ I could have easily played all the Indian roles, the girlfriends and sidekicks, or just gone and done something only in India.”
Instead, she sought out challenging roles, often playing non-Indian characters such as Iranian or Arab women, for example a Palestinian girl in “Miral,” a choice that she recognizes is now controversial.
“I know it’s not okay these days, because the world has opened up and there’s so much talent,” Pinto says. “But — and I don’t mean this in a pompous...

What would you do if you couldn't remember the day you almost died?
The new Apple TV+ drama series Surface aims to answer that question.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a woman named Sophie who is left with severe memory loss after falling into the ocean.
Everyone wants her to believe she tried to kill herself, but Sophie has questions.
“But if my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?” she wonders.
It's a logical question, and if the trailer is any indication, this will be a big psychological thriller with more questions than answers.
According to the description, Sophie is "a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt."

Carol Burnett has lined up a return to the small screen.
The beloved star has joined the forthcoming Apple TV+ comedy series, Mrs. American Pie.
The series is described as "a story about gorgeously impossible people" and follows Maxine Simmons' (played by Kristen Wiig) attempt to secure her seat at America's most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society.
As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Mrs. American Pie asks the same questions that still baffle us today:
"Who gets a seat at the table?"
"How do you get a seat at the table?"
"What will you sacrifice to get there?"
Set during the powderkeg era of the early 1970s, Mrs. American Pie is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance at superficial greatness.

In June 2020, amid the global Black Lives Matter movement, a three-page open letter began circulating across the U.K. film and TV industry with four commands from its signatories: Banish your weak excuses, be more demanding, expand your vision and empower Black and brown independent producers.
Modeled after a letter to Hollywood issued by New York’s Black TV & Film Collective, the U.K. dispatch was bold and unapologetic, ultimately garnering 5,010 signatures from the likes of Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michaela Coel, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Colin Firth, Florence Pugh and other top talent.
It was, as Mbatha-Raw puts it, “so un-British.” In a good way.
The U.K. had its own reckoning with race following the murder of George Floyd on May 25 in America, and the local film and TV industry was quick to make declarations of allyship and engage in untold commitments. The letter presented a framework for the missing link: accountability.
