Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. The movie will tell the story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Smith is already getting some early awards buzz for the role so Oscar-heads may want to check this one out.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Shannyn Sossamon has been cast in the lead role of the Fox drama pilot “The Cleaning Lady,” Variety has learned.
Based on the Argentine series “La Chica Que Limpia,” the show follows Reyna Salonga (Sossamon), a whip-smart Filipina doctor who comes to the U.S. in hopes to get a medical treatment for her critically ill son. Willing to do anything to save her son, Reyna walks the tightrope of morality, breaking the law for all the right reasons — and eventually forges her own path in the criminal underworld.

"Sonny, are you going to turn on me?!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie crime thriller now titled Obsession, the latest from Croatian filmmaker Goran Dukic (of Wristcutters: A Love Story). This has gone under a few other titles including Ruthless or American Dream, but now they're releasing it this fall with this Obsession title. The film is about an out-of-work mechanic, played by Mekhi Phifer who, after saving an older man and befriending him begins to fall for his mysterious wife. The older man has plans to build a motor sports park, and his wife puts together a plot to murder him and rob him of his riches. Also starring Elika Portnoy, Brad Dourif, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and Kerry Cahill. Looks like an old school love affair crime caper, with a racetrack heist and murder and everything thrown in. Before the North Dakota oil boom (as witnessed in Jesse Moss’ The Overnighters), a good century back, there was the another type of boom. Commonly associated with the West, North Dakota was home to a short lived gold rush. Sabyn Mayfield will tap into the reserves of two up-and-comer players for what will be his directorial debut as THR reports that Boyd Holbrook and Rachel Brosnahan will topline Boomtown alongside Jocelin Donahue and newcomer Tyler Riggs. Holbrook is set to play Jt’s childhood best friend and Brosnahan plays a local bartender in the oil town.
Gist: Co-written by Mayfield and David Newbert, this follows Jt Turner’s (Riggs) journey across the country to Williston, North Dakota, home of the modern day Gold Rush. In an effort to make ends meet, the main character leaves his family behind to pursue a grueling, yet highly coveted, job in a now booming oil industry.

Shannyn Sossamon became something of an "It Girl" in the early noughties with roles in films including "A Knight's Tale," "40 Days and 40 Nights," the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation "Rules of Attraction" and "The Order" (her second and final film with the late Heath Ledger, whom she called "a very special spirit" but was otherwise reticent to talk about in a short-form interview), but after giving birth to her son Audio in 2003 she all but disappeared from the spotlight. Since then, Sossamon has popped up in everything from well-received indies ("Wristcutters: A Love Story") to big, star-studded Hollywood com-coms ("The Holiday") to TV series (the cult single-season CBS vampire drama "Moonlight"), though recently her resume is heavy on so-called "genre" work, from the 2008 J-horror remake "One Missed Call" to the 2011 post-apocalyptic thriller "The Day" to this year's buzzy summer series "Wayward Pines" and now "Sinister 2," the sequel to the sleeper...

When Shannyn Sossamon first hit the scene in the early 2000s, she was one of the Hollywood It Girls. With roles alongside some of the hottest heartthrobs around -- including Heath Ledger, Josh Hartnett and James Van Der Beek -- she quickly made a name for herself in films like "A Knight's Tale," "40 Days and 40 Nights" and "The Rules of Attraction." Now 36 and a mother to two children -- Audio Science, 12, and Clayton, 3 -- those days are a bit blurry to the actress. "I don’t remember anything," she tells toofab's Brian Particelli when asked what it was like to gain notoriety during such a wild time in Hollywood. "I always say that I wasn’t really ready when I started to do movies and so I learned as I’ve been going. It was fun, but I was definitely a little reckless being when I was younger, so I don’t remember much!

Back in January, Trish Bendix wrote a piece on the UK series Mistresses becoming a Us series, which will star Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim and Rochelle Aytes (who I previously had never heard of but is supremely attractive). Trish got the inside scoop on the character Josslyn, played by Jes Macallan, who will eventually find herself with a lady lover.
Josslyn's character is described as "free-spirited and capricious" and in half of the promo shots on ABC's website, she's wearing a tiara, so I like her already.

I won't lie, when I first heard there would be a queer relationship on this show, I was rooting for it to be Alyssa Milano's character, Savannah. Alas, it's her younger sister.

You probably recognize her striking looks and effortless charm from films like A Knight's Tale, 40 Days and 40 Nights, and Wristcutters: A Love Story. With the release of her new film tomorrow, Friday, March 1st. we sat down with Shannyn to discuss being "quirky", chemistry, and shooting her first lesbian love scene. Before becoming the iconic, gruff Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, Nick Offerman was in plenty of offbeat indie comedies like Wristcutters: A Love Story and Harmony and Me. Offerman is back working with Harmony writer-director Bob Byington on Somebody Up There Likes Me. The film co-stars Megan Mullally, Kevin Corrigan, Keith Poulson, Jess Weixler, and Friday Night Lights' Stephanie Hunt. It's perfect if you've ever been like, "I wish Ron Swanson were more twee and wore wire-frame glasses."...

This story first appeared in the Jan. 25 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Although indie filmmaking might be one of the least lucrative endeavors in showbiz, producers continue to search for a way to beat the odds by assembling features with the potential to turn a profit. Jonathan Schwartz is one producer who has cracked the code, creating a business model that marries art house sensibility with profitability. Violent, witty and peppered with references to past pop culture, Tarantino's film-making style has its own dictionary entry. Do any other modern directors have the same clout?
Tarantinoesque (adj) – referring to or reminiscent of the work of the American film-maker and actor Quentin Tarantino (born 1963), known for the violence and wit of his films.
No one these days, not even the Collins English Dictionary, doubts how influential Tarantino has been over his 21-year career. Any lippy thriller featuring pop culture-fried dialogue and flip violence in the wake of Reservoir Dogs – 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag, The 51st State, the works of Guy Ritchie – were branded you know what. And, impressively, it cemented into an enduring idiom: Joe Carnahan was still painting from the palette in 2007's Smokin' Aces, and reviewers were handing out the Tarantinoesque badge, a touch dog-eared now, as late as this Christmas gone, to Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths.

This year, the battle for the “Best Actor” category is fierce. However, one of our favorites is John Hawkes. Is brilliant performance in “The Sessions” may garner him the coveted Oscar. Soon we will find out. John Hawkes has been working non-stop since his critically acclaimed performance as Teardrop in “Winter’s Bone,” the role which earned him an Independent Spirit Award win and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Hawkes can be seen in Ben Lewin’s “The Sessions,” the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined – at age 38 – to lose his virginity. He also recently completed production on “Lincoln,” “Arcadia” and “The Playroom.” Hawkes’ additional film credits include “Higher Ground,” “Contagion,” “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” “American Gangster,” “Miami Vice,” “Identity,” “The Perfect Storm,” “Small Town Saturday Night,” “Hardball,” “Wristcutters: A Love Story,” “The Amateurs,...

James Ponsoldt’s Smashed saw its world debut at Sundance at the start of the year, and leading lady Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s performance has been Oscar-buzzed ever since.
The film won the Special Jury Prize at the festival, and just last month, Winstead’s performance was recognised once more when the Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced, nominating her for Best Actress.
It opened in a limited release in the Us back in October, and has been continuing its expansion over the weeks since then, and will now be released in the UK this Friday. Sony have released the UK variant of the trailer, and though it is essentially identical to the first trailer we saw in September, it’s nice to know for 100% certain that it has secured the UK release it deserves.

The Oscar buzz has been surrounding Mary Elizabeth Winstead for her performance in Smashed all year, since the film debuted at Sundance back in January, where it jointly won the Special Jury Prize.
I absolutely loved the film when it continued its festival circuit at Tiff, and with the film currently in limited release in the Us, Sony have finally announced that they’ll be releasing the film here in the UK on 14th December.
Winstead stars opposite Aaron Paul, with the leading duo playing a functioning alcoholic couple, and when the former realises what a mess her life has become, her path to sobriety is not an easy one.
“Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter . . . and getting smashed. When Kate’s partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something’s got to give.

James Ponsoldt’s Smashed debuted at Sundance this year and came away not only with an award in hand, but also with a substantial level of critical acclaim, and early buzz for the coming Oscar season for its leading duo of Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) – very impressive, given that the film screened at the festival before this year’s Oscars had even taken place.
Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing the film next month, and with the film screening at Tiff this week, Yahoo Movies have debuted the first trailer and poster, and they are both exactly as brilliant as we expected.

Starring Lukas Haas (Inception) in the lead, Crazy Eyes is due out in the Us this summer and has had its first trailer debut tonight.
Adam Sherman (Hapiness Runs, producer of Wristcutters: A Love Story) returns behind the camera for his second film, and Apple have debuted the first trailer ahead of its July release in the Us.
Though it won’t be topping the box office (going up against The Amazing Spider-Man), it looks promising and will hopefully find its audience.

A dark, realistic character study that isn't for the easily offended.
Director: Adam Sherman
Writers: Adam Sherman, Dave Reeves, Rachel Hardisty
Stars: Lukas Haas, Madeline Zima and Jake Busey
Of all the films screening at SXSW this year 'Crazy Eyes' was one of the first to get cut from my schedule. At first glance it was easy to assume I'd seen too many of these types of films before. You know the type: guy can get any girl he wants but wants the one he can't have. Still, at the last minute I decided to take a risk and catch the premiere screening. As soon as the credits rolled I knew I had found my festival favorite.
Synopsis: Zach, a wealthy, alcoholic divorcee and father, is torn between his past love and present infatuation. His obsession for Rebecca, who he affectionately calls Crazy Eyes, seems to be driving...

Hellacious Acres: the Case of John Glass is not a movie for everyone. It is a movie for those of you embrace the absurd, enjoy a little arthouse in your science fiction, or watch the SyFy channel’s Saturday night movies. If you’re the sort of person who might tune in for one of those offerings, then this is a movie you should try to track down.
The basic premise is that a man—John Glass, he is told—awakes in a barn, alone, in a suit he can never remove and only the prerecorded words of a computer program to tell him who he is, where he is, and why he is. His mission? To help begin restoring the world by activating three different checkpoints to tell whomever might be listening that someone is alive on the surface of the world. His assets? This week sees the release of "Paul," Simon Pegg & Nick Frost's outrageous comic road movie where they play two British sci-fi nerds in America who help a rowdy alien (Seth Rogen) get back to his home planet. Over the course of their journey they inevitably get their minds blown in many ways, although Paul's love of super-strong Mary Jane is definitely involved at one point.

To the avid movie fan and even some of my fellow Pajibans, the Academy Awards telecast is akin to the Superbowl. Hours of pomp and circumstance over the best movie costumes and sound editing, fussing over the clothes people wear to a bloated ceremony and speech upon speech upon falsely modest speech. But for those of you who aren't into all that, you need a little something to distract you for a moment or two and I consider it an honor and a privilege to give you this distraction (which if you're lucky, will get you through exactly that amount of time). Hopefully the list will at least provide you a chuckle, a quizzical expression upon your face and a few ideas for naming your next child, pet or blow-up friend; whatever the case may be. After all, according to the media, we--the regular people--enjoy doing everything we can to...

Really, you should be listening to music every day, but thanks to Twitter, Monday has become the best day of the week to discover new songs, show some love to the tune currently dominating your iPod playlist and quietly judge the listening habits of your closest friends. Amy Seimetz swears her long of credits from some of the most important movies of the last few years is just a fluke. "It might look more impressive than it actually is," she says of a resume that includes festival favorites Tiny Furniture, The Myth of the American Sleepover, Wristcutters: A Love Story and Gabi on the Roof in July. "I did a lot of small parts, and that's like two days of my life." But that argument falls apart when it comes to The Off Hours, an indisputable starring role for Seimetz in which she plays Francine, a waitress at a diner in rural Oregon who has been spinning her wheels for the last ten years of her life, rooming with her foster brother (Monsters's Scoot McNairy) who has a crush on her and staying up too late at rock shows. A chance encounter with a truck driver who...

Wristcutters: A Love Story Dir. Goran Dukic (2006) A slight digression: musician and sometime actor, Eugene Hutz, best known for his work as Gogol Bordello's frontman and as Alex in the film version of Everything is Illuminated, must have the charisma of 1000 suns. Or the type of charisma that inspires people to become obsessed with him. There's a documentary on him, The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, and Madonna's debut as a director, Filth and Wisdom, is mostly centered around Hutz. Wristcutters: A Love Story, has a central character of Eugene, a Russian musician played by actor Shea Whigham, who is based on Hutz. Imagine how charismatic and interesting Hutz must be to inspire so many people's art... Mindboggling, right?
