Brilliant script

You're got Archie at a black party, Mr J, Mammy J, and mixed color in-laws. What a perfect comic scenario. CC didn't have to dominate. Just chime in some great lines here & there. What a powerful humorous flow. One great bit after another. Archie & Mr J clashes are always classic. Even funnier when they agree on things.

Archie and George find some common ground
gcanfield-297276 September 2020
All three Willis characters were originated by different actors than those who would become associated with the roles. To be quite superficial, I think Lynne Moody and Kim Hamilton were both prettier than the actresses who replaced them. On another note, an interesting point is made here, but not really followed up on. Archie, for all his bigotry, actually wants to attend Lionel's engagement party. He even tells Louise how much he likes Lionel, after she assumed Archie wouldn't want to go to the party. The friendship between Archie and Lionel is underplayed. The second half of the episode focuses on George's obvious reaction to the Willis' mixed marriage. George Jefferson was, for all purposes, a black version of Archie. This point is made, at the end, when Archie and George both question "what the world is coming to."

Little did anyone know what the future would bring with this episode. It broke a lot of ground and opened up all kinds of doors.

George Jefferson meets Lionel's future in laws

Lionel is engaged and hasn't revealed something about his fiancée Jenny's parents to his father George.

Hilarious episode that starts with Archie mistakenly believing he is invited to Lionel's engagement party. Louise then has to invite him making George furious. The party scene has a lot of laughs, as we first meet George's sharp tongued mother (Zara Cully), who Archie calls "Mammy"! We also find out Jenny's parents are a white man(Charles Aidman) and a black woman(Kim Hamiliton), throwing George into a rage. The father Mr Willis diffuses the situation by asking Louise to dance. Archie tells George "Ya see what mixed marriages lead to, mixed dancing!" Then in one of the best scenes in the series history, Archie and George get together at the bar and George says "Bunker, what is the world coming to?" Archie replies "Beats me Jefferson, but here's to yesterday." And the two bigots toast each other. One of the very best episodes
