Bee's Big Moments
adrian_heflin21 September 2017
Bee is upset because Goober won a pancake eating contest and Helen won a spelling bee? This is the same woman who had her own cooking show, won a Hollywood game show, and caught a crook through jury duty. My my, how soon we forget our accomplishments. Aunt Bee's facial expressions while flying are priceless. Goobers's need to mention those pancakes every five seconds becomes annoying.

Nice Message

We've all been in those storytelling situations with the one upsmanship. Here, Bee can't tell her own story. So she takes a chance, learning to fly. The cool thing is watching her gain confidence after many fits and starts. I really liked the guy who was her teacher.

Would Never Happen

I used to strongly dislike this episode; but I know nothing of what it takes to operate a small plane. Certainly it goes againt Aunt Bee's personality type: Extremely strong, in ways of family, and offering opinions, but flying a plane?!?!? Really. Yet, it bothers me more that ANYone with a grade school science class education could believe that a goat could explode...yet THAT episode is a favorite, as it has so many positive fac ets, such as great writing. Similarly, Frances Baviers' acting makes me root for her in this dream to accomplish something extraordinary to the common woman or man. You go Bee!!!

Airport location

This, too, was one of my favorite color episodes of TAGS. I think it's because of my love for flying and small engine aircraft.

After watching this episode for 35 years, I wanted to know where this place was.

After some research, I found that the smoke stacks in the background are located at:

9430 San Fernando Rd, Sun Valley, CA 34°14'20.63"N, 118°23'36.60"W

The airport is right down the street at Whiteman Airport 34°15'29.09"N, 118°24'44.98"W

Use these coordinates in Google Earth and you will feel like you're in 1968 and ready to fly with Aunt Bee!

Pacoima

I, too, have watched this episode several times and wondered where the airport was located. Since the episode was aired in 1968, and given the way the greater Los Angeles area has grown in the last 40 years, I thought the airport might no longer exist since it was so small.

After reading the initial question and the follow up comments, it appears you were correct about the airport being the one near Pacoima.

I am watching the episode right now and saw the smoke stacks in the background. I went on Google Maps, found the area, zoomed in a bit, and switched over to the satellite view.

The smoke stacks can be clearly seen. They are located east of the airport.

San Fernando Valley

Rumor says that the site was Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, California. It is a small airport in the San Fernando Valley and has been around for a very long time.

A co-worker saw this episode and mentions that a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Power Plant is in the background. He should know, as that is where we work.

As I have not seen this show yet, since hearing we are in the background I have started looking for it. If anyone is able to confirm this rumor, it would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, my own search for this episode continues.

Airport Filming location?
cvanloon14 March 2007
Does anyone know at which airport this episode was filmed? The background looks a lot like Cable Airport in Upland, or maybe like some airport in the San Gabriel Valley. There are four striped smokestacks in the background, too, so that might be a clue. This was a really sweet episode, with Aunt Bee deciding to take on a challenge so that she could have a big moment to share, like everyone else at a gathering at Andy's house. The pilot who took her up was played by an actor names John McLiam, who I've never seen anywhere else. The company he worked for was McDonald's Flying School (another possible clue? or maybe just a sign they made for that episode?) If anybody can tell me where this was filmed, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

It's possible.

The episode gets called out on how preposterous it is. Had a good comedic flow. How wild it was it still clicked. Each regular cast member told their own proud story. Bee's uptightness was justified here. We get a rare cute straight on camera view of Helen (Aneta Corsaut) spelling renaissance. Orange & green season 8 shirted Opie got in some good remarks being a pest. Why would a two-bit filling station be dropping off parts to an air field?

A very good acting performance by Frances Bavier. Seemed quite cold in SoCal during the shooting. Helen was dressed like an Eskimo for the solo. Looked like some amazing cookies.

Re: "Aunt Bee's Big Moment - location

Yes, i believe it WAS shot @ Whiteman Airport (WHP). Noticed just today that someone had posted some still photo shots of the episode while filming there back in 1968 at the airport.

Of course, all the stills don't show the eventual build-up of industry and businesses that are now lining up and down San Fernando Rd.

Someone has made mention of the "smokestacks" in the background.

Those are the "4-stacks" that pilots and controllers mention as a landmark around the airport area. (the 'four stacks' also are mentioned in the Sandra Bullock movie "the Net" - in which a friend of hers flies his Cessna airplane into the stacks after being 'off-course', due to a malfunction - which the audience is asked to believe can be done via computer. (it can't).

The four stacks (there are really six now), are just south of Whiteman Airport.

i've posted a copy of the Aunt Bee photo page here:
