It's Eric Braedon....so you know he has to be mega-evil!
planktonrules16 July 2021
Certain character actors tended to play villains again and again and again on 60s and 70s TV shows. One of these is Eric Braedon...who even managed to play an evil character on "The Mary Tyler Moore" show! Now THAT'S evil!!

The show begins with Hans (Braedon) being cornered by his old partner...a guy who Hans left to the police and ran off with all the loot. But Hans is a sweet-talker, and manages to convince Hans that he is his best bud...and then only moments later kills him. Why? Well, it turns out a famous collection of porcelains were stolen long ago, and Hans has the Habsburg collection.

Soon a British secret service agent (Bernard Fox) arrives at Barnaby's office...asking Barnaby's help in locating the Habsburg collection and soon they are on Hans' tail. What's next? Well, considering what a cold and vicious character Hans is, you can pretty much bet on some more murder!

This is a pretty standard episode of "Barnaby Jones" and little to distinguish it one way or the other....which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Enjoyable, though the ending seemed a tad abrupt.

Unexplained elements and plot holes
helpert17 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
One near plot hole is how the Raven ( Eric Braden) has such a beautiful wife and such a steady and successful American lifestyle when he was in Europe as a double agent just a few years earlier. Why is nobody already onto him?

Unexplained elements! Where did Sinchek's dead body go!?! What did the Raven use to get fellow (excellent) guest star John Anderson's body out onto a road to look like an auto accident? Look, I know it's an hour long show and they cannot visualize everything but they could have quickly had the Raven make a phone call to some henchman to get down to his house immediately to move a corpse immediately.

On other matters. Bernard Fox as the visiting Colonel is a little stereotypical! No matter how realistically and believably they tried to play it and him!

THE BRITISH ARE COMING!
tcchelsey22 December 2023
This was the only episode written by Carey Wilbur, who specialized in westerns, and he did a super job in creative writing with this one. It's a shame he didn't do more stories for the show.

Bernard Fox, of BEWITCHED and HOGANS HEROES fame, turns more dramatic here, playing the very British Colonel Redford who teams with Barnaby to get the goods on a notorious international thief and killer called the Raven (best played by Eric Braedon).

Barnaby and the colonel make an ideal team, and actually Bernard Fox should have returned for an encore performance in later episodes, he is that much fun to watch. He was an actors actor. Same goes for Eric Braeden, really getting into his role as a master thief, the prize being rare porcelain vases. The story actually begins with Hans, alias the Raven, killing his former partner to get it all. He is positively ruthless, but also quite the refined gentleman!

There's also a lot of truth to this episode as porcelain remains a rare property, made with kaolin, a special clay, which is difficult to find. The price goes up and up!

John Anderson, yet another fine dramatic actor co-stars, who likewise played some distinguished baddies.

A one of a kind episode you do not want to miss, and especially to see Barnaby close in on the crafty Raven.

Nearing the end of SEASON 3, EPISODE 23 remastered CBS dvd box set.
