"If Memory Serves..."
jazzfi5 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
My favorites from the Bewitched series lean toward those in color, and wherein Endora put some sort of spell on Darren, or in this case, his watch..

Larry Tate suggests that Darren improve his memory to improve their customer relations (Larry true to form always needs to pick on Darren about something) and Darren finds a book on how to improve his memory.. Endora finds him reading said book and the temptation to improve his memory by way of a spell is too much to resist. It helps, at first when Darren pleases the client du jour by remembering his kids' names, but before long Darren is remembering every tidbit of every label, book, magazine article, album cover notes, etc. he has ever read, and is soon becoming the champion bore of the world. Naturally, the client, who happens to pride himself of being an expert on everything himself, is soon extremely annoyed by Darren stealing the spotlight, which is also annoying Larry to no end (so what else is new?) until Samantha can determine the source of the spell and restore order.

An excellent episode, which (for trivia fans) reunites Dick York and Dan Tobin (the client of this episode, whose name is Ed Pennybaker) who worked together famously in the classic Twilight Zone episode, "A Penny For Your Thoughts," with Tobin as York's boss.

What if... you remember everything?

Warning: Spoilers
This is arguably one of the funniest of the "Endora pranks Darrin" episodes. She endows him with a really superior memory after hearing him lament the lack thereof via a quick spell on his wristwatch. Every tiny detail suddenly emerges from the depths of his brain and soon he is overwhelming everyone he encounters including his secretary, Samantha and especially Larry and his knowledgeable client who is swamped by the tsunami of detailed information and fun facts that Darren churns out. Some good comes out of all this in the end as the client realizes what an talkative bore he is and amends his behavior.

Having a good memory doesn't equal being rude

I find the plot of this episode irritating, because the complications don't develop naturally from the situation. Endora puts a spell on Darren so that he will have a perfect memory and remember everything he ever learned. But just because he can remember things well doesn't mean that he would lose the capacity to know when to shut up, or that he would fail to recognize when he was angering the client. Yet Darren proceeds to become a long-winded know-it-all, constantly showing off his knowledge and rudely one-upping his client. It simply doesn't make sense within the context of story.
