"Avast me Hearties"

John Astin guest stars in this Bonanza episode as an old sea faring friend of Michael Landon's home after 17 years. That's longer than the run of the Bonanza series up to this point.
The old sailor has returned to dig up some money he buried 17 years ago if he can find it. He and Little Joe follow the directions he laid out years ago to the burial spot. The problem is that it is on the property of the widow Emmaline Henry and her son Russell Schulman and her mother the sharpshooting Irene Tedrow. These three have a smallpox epidemic cooked up to keep the wolf away who is the banker with the due mortgage.
Henry also has the idea that what's on her property is her's and she's got Momma to back her up. It all sounds like the perfect formula for a roving man to settle down.
Astin is his usual weirdsmobile self in the part. One of those Bonanza stories laced with humor and for once not at Dan Blocker's expense.
