A special project
bkoganbing2 May 2016
After being paroled to Ben Cartwright after his invaluable help during the prison riot in the previous episode, Tim Matheson gets hired on at the Ponderosa. He becomes a special project for Lorne Greene and for David Canary who knew him back before he was in the joint.

Matheson does not adjust easy to life on the outside. Rough bunkhouse humor is not something he takes to at all. The word 'institutionalized' hadn't come into usage yet, but that's what Matheson is.

And of course a new ex-con in town is the first one suspected of a robbery taking place in Virginia City. Deputy Bing Russell comes to the Ponderosa on that case.

You know it works out for Matheson as he became a series regular in that last Bonanza season. You'll have to see how on your own though.

Welcome Aboard Griff

This episode picks up with ending of the previous one. The line of the prison worker is reminiscent of the end of Caged. There is some humor in the early part of this one, making it less grim than other episodes from the final season. Still it's sad watching Griff try to adjust to the Ponderosa. Ronny Cox puts in a good performance. He's even drawn into a complex situation. Michael Landon is used sparingly. Mitch Vogel appears even less. Still he helps with the comic relief. It's a great episode for Candy. I've enjoyed watching Bing Russell play a deputy in the series. Russell has his share of trouble in this one.

Just like with every film or series he's in tim matheson manages to spoil the show ... he never changes and is always a self serving jackass which i knew from the first frat house picture he was in ... at least he gets put in his arrogant place in this episode.
