Some squalid conditions
bkoganbing16 November 2016
As you would expect Ben Cartwright takes his new position seriously when he goes on an inspection of the state prison with the rest of his colleagues on the Prison Board. But he gets a lot more than he bargained for when there's a prison riot and he and the other board members are taken hostage.

The prisoners are living in some squalid conditions and the demands of the prisoner through their spokesperson Gregory Walcott are reasonable and real. But Walcott is killed by psychotic killer Marco St.John who just sees this as an opportunity to escape.

This episode introduced Tim Matheson as a Bonanza regular Griff King, a convict who Lorne Greene befriends and who helps save his life. Matheson didn't last long as the show was nearing its end.

Others notable in the cast are Denver Pyle as a weak and corrupt warden, Aldo Ray as a sadistic prison guard, and Barney Phillips as a more humane guard.

A good debut for Matheson, sorry that the engagement didn't last longer for him.

Inspection Time Uncovers Inhumane Prison

Ben Cartwright goes on a fact finding mission to see how prisoners are being treated. It turns out the conditions are so bad the prisoners have demands to change things. And they're willing to take hostages including sympathetic Ben. It turns out one of the level-headed inmates is Griff played by Tim Matheson. This is Matheson's introduction to the series. After being on the Virginian, Matheson is a welcome addition to Bonanza. Aldo Ray does a good job of playing a corrupt guard and Denver Pyle gets to play a feckless warden. The suspense is solid. And Joe and Candy are utilized for intense action scenes.
