School pranks

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching Getting Greg's Goat ages and ages ago, and upon reflection, I wonder if the plotline, where Greg steals a rival school's goat mascot, inspired the famous The Simpsons episode Homer Goes to College, which debuted in 1993, 20 years after Getting Greg's Goat debuted. In Homer Goes to College, Homer and the college "nerds" kidnap a rival college's mascot, a pig called Sir Oinkcelot. Anyway, I enjoyed reading Barry Williams's book about his Brady Bunch days, Growing Up Brady, and he gives a tell-all, and how he dated his on-screen mom, Florence Henderson (they went out on one date).

Classic sitcom hijinks

This is quality comedy writing. Classic sitcoms must have plots far beyond real life, otherwise it's just a drama. The characters here are also typical of great comedy; the stern vice principal using formal names, the over-reactive PTA mothers. This is what creates comedy. Nobody "mailed in" this episode. For a Brady Bunch episode, it's a solid 10.

Excellent.

This was one of the more hard edged story of the Brady Bunch episode. None of the other children had ever been shown to be in major trouble. Greg not only violated the school rule but the law. The Brady bunch episodes were thought to be saccharine but this one is not. I won't give away the ending for those who have not seen it but there are consequences for Greg's behavior. All the cast is priceless in this scene with their reactions to finding out about the goat stealing. Peter and Bobby think it is a person that Greg is hiding and Alice hears Greg talking through the closet and wonders if she is hearing things. All ends well. Robert Reed did an excellent job of directing this.

THE FAMOUS GOAT SCANDAL!
tcchelsey7 December 2023
Comedy writer Milton Pascal wrote this 10 PLUS episode, writer for such classics as THAT GIRL. If you were to put together a comedy reel of top Brady Bunch episodes, this would be at the beginning, the most outrageous.

It's the eve of the BIG football game between rivals Westdale and Coolidge High School, and comes the tradition of stealing school mascots. Westdale's bear cub has been stolen, so why not steal Coolidge's prize goat? Greg naturally has the honors of stashing the goat around the Brady homestead --and up she goes to his new attic bedroom, the perfect place?

I agree with the last reviewer, this episode is also a first, because it actually deals with a serious theme. Greg could have been arrested for hiding the goat.

The accent though, is comedy and it gets pretty wild. Peter and Bobby begin to think Greg has a secret gal pal stashed upstairs (because he's also talking to the goat).... Mike believes it's time to have one of those father and son chats with Greg. MEANWHILE... Carol holds a PTA meeting downstairs and the goat breaks loose. Perfect timing.

Great bit by Sandra Gould (BEWITCHED) playing very excited Mrs. Gould. It would have been a blast had she played Mrs. Kravatz instead. Look for stern vice principal George Wallace, best known for starring as COMMANDO CODY in the legendary movie serial. Super trivia question.

One of the absolute best, well directed by Robert Reed.

By the way. The real Brady Bunch house is sandwiched between North Hollywood and Studio City, actually a few miles from No. Ho. High School.

Must See TV. From SEASON 5 remastered ABC/Paramount dvd box set.

A Sheepish Plot
sd726676 October 2019
Since it was the last season when this aired, the writers obviously mailed it in with this script. Greg steals another school's mascot & that's about it. When Carol holds a PTA meeting at their house, the goat gets loose & a campy "Scooby Doo style" chase scene ensues. The neighbor from Bewitched Mrs Kravitz aka Sandra Gould & Variety Columnist Army Archerd's wife Selma Archerd appear as PTA parents during the awful goat chase scene.
