Very Disappointing Ending..
mc-2123012 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I was a Dallas viewer from beginning to end.

This ending, was an extremely disappointing, and inappropriate ending, to what was a wonderful series.

A more fitting ending, would have been something such as.. someone showing JR how he hurt people. Family, friends, business people, and such is why he ended up alone.

The whole. "Everyone in the Ewing family would have been so different without you", does not take into account JR's actions, and how he affected others.

While the reunion movies in 1996 and 1998 were far better than this final episode, I still never would have ended the series in the manner that it was ended.

Dallas deserved a much better ending
Kingslaay7 May 2017
After years of memorable moments which included the iconic Who Shot JR? episode Dallas ended on a disappointing and bad note. The finale tried to have elements of 'Its A Wonderful Life' or perhaps even a 'A Christmas Carol' to show JR how life would have been had he been out of the picture. The burning question is why? Why do such a type of finale which ended up being hugely disappointing. Dallas had gone down in the ratings over the years but millions had tuned in for its finale due to its legacy and memorable moments, boy must have they been disappointed.

Many wanted to see a family reunion of some sort or perhaps some sort of twist as Dallas started shocking cliffhangers. With such a rich family history, the cast still being alive and talented producers it is bizarre to end this great show in such a manner. The large cast was not really included and it was painful to watch the villain everyone loves to hate swim in self-pity. The alternate realities of Sue Ellen and other characters was dull, lackluster and unimpressive. Why would be want to see completely different and non Dallas story lines? Ones that don't involve oil, backstabbing and revenge? This was the producers chance to end this show on a high note as millions would be tuning in. Conundrum has to be the most disappointing finale for a TV show. Gladly Dallas:JR Returns which was a TV movie gave us a Dallas and JR that we would have liked to see.

A terrible ending to a great show

Warning: Spoilers
Dallas was a great show to watch. Unfortunately, it went downhill the last few years. This episode is a prime example.

JR Ewing meets a spirit being named Adam, who takes him on a journey to show him what life would be like if he were never born. This was to resemble "It's a Wonderful Life," except that JR Ewing is no George Bailey. George Bailey was beloved by his family and friends, while JR wrecked lives and left people with a lot of animosity.

Without JR, Gary would be the oldest son, Bobby the middle child, and there would be another son named Jason. Gary runs Ewing Oil into the ground causing Jock to commit suicide and Miss Ellie dies of a broken heart two years later. Gary does become a hot shot divorce lawyer in Beverly Hills. Bobby is a compulsive gambler and deeply in debt. Carter McKay is a casino boss to whom Bobby is indebted. Jason is a shady real estate developer who makes his first fortune by leveling Southfork.

Sue Ellen is a successful actress married Nicholas Pierce, who does not die because there was no JR to push him off the balcony. Kristin, Sue Ellen's sister, is a con artist targeting people in power.

Cally never leaves Hayleyville and is married to an abusive redneck. One night, he comes home drunk and frustrated. He snaps at Cally when she suggests taking the kids to the doctor. When the kids are crying, he grabs his belt to give them a thrashing. Cally grabs a shotgun to scare her husband Eb. Thinking she is bluffing, he walks toward her and is determined to beat her to death. As he approaches her, she shoots him and he literally flies across the room. Any court in the land would recognize this as justifiable homicide, except for the so called Hayleyville "justice system." Cally would be convicted of first degree murder and would be sent to prison for life.

Cliff Barnes did not have JR around as a nemesis and may not have wanted anything to do with the oil business seeing what it did to his father Digger. Cliff got his law degree, had a successful law practice, went into politics, and is the Vice President of the United States. He later becomes President when the sitting President falls ill. He also has a beautiful and supportive wife along with two beautiful children.

Ray Krebbs never learns that he is a Ewing as a result of Jock dying before he could find out. Ray loses his job when Southfork is pummeled and tries the rodeo circuit. He injured his back and has to make ends meet by working odd jobs and has a job at a local bar. Ray is as poor as a church mouse, but has a family who loves him unconditionally. He even has a son named Jock. He is the only one of the brothers who is truly happy, despite never learning about his relation to the Ewings.

JR thinks that Adam is an Angel, but in the end he learns that he is really a demon in disguise. He encourages JR to kill himself. We hear a shot ring out, but it doesn't resolve itself until the movie "JR Returns."

I think a better finale would have been to show what the people's reaction could be if JR really did kill himself. JR would see glimpses of his enemies such as McKay, Cliff Barnes, and Michelle celebrating his death. This would set JR off and at the end of the dream, Adam would bring JR to a crossroads where he has to make a choice to kill himself or make changes. Fast forward to a month later and JR walks into his new office at his new company JR Ewing & Associates. Sly is working for JR again and all is forgiven. It turns out that Sly's fiancé's job offer fell through and they decided to call of the engagement, although the continue to see each other. JR then calls Sly into his office where he tells her of his plans for those who tried to bring him down and that it will be his ultimate revenge.

Just shook my head (again) in watching this.

Warning: Spoilers
I remember tuning into the Dallas finale in my college (1991) days and was disappointed. I re-watched the entire original run of shows (1978-1991) and watched this episode again (now 30 years later) and am amazed at how terrible the show's finale few seasons became.

This episode was the final nail in the coffin and it was too bad that creators and staff could not provide a better product. I can understand that J. R was the primary character during the show's run, but this ending just felt wrong for the original series run.... It just did NOT fit.

The whole "Ghost/Angel/Devil" that guided the event during this episode was terrible-- And the last scene where his eyes were devilish red was a shame-- The show really did deserve a better ending.

It seemed like their goal was to create new excitement in order to re-ignite viewers but it fell entirely flat. They jumped the shark!

Great soap,bad ending

Warning: Spoilers
I have ticked the spoiler but i guess it's that old now that everyone will have seen it that cares. What an absolutely dreadful ending to what was my favourite soap.In it's heyday Dallas walked all over Dynasty without ever really needing to try to hard, but for the devil to visit JR Ewing and show him what life would be like in a world without him was bizarre to say the least, was it a dream? Was it a psychosis induced hallucination? I don't know but what i do know is i wanted to see him getting the better of all his enemies one last time,to stitch up all those who crossed him was a must.JR needed to go out in a bang of glory not an episode that looked and felt pointless. For those who haven't seen it,stay away.As i said JR is visited by the devil when drunk alone on the ranch one night after saying everyone would be happier if he's never been born.Sure enough the devil gives him an insight into what this would be like, sure enough everyone is different and no one is happier. At the end of this the devil encourages JR to kill himself,at this time Bobby Ewing returns to hear a gun shot and when he bursts into JR's room his face has that look of anguish we've seen before on Dallas. But is JR dead. Well in 1996 JR returned came out,so there's your answer.
