J.R and Ray

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the suspense that was within this episode. It was an episode for which a guest appearance (Brian Denehey) went on to have a great acting career. You could see his talent come through in this episode.

In re-watching the series again, I noted how J. R and Ray referenced a "weekend with those women in Waco" in episode one ("Digger's Daughter") while they were devising a scheme to break-up Bobby and Pam. And in this episode, they actually spend the night with women from Waco to stir-up the turmoil.

I find it interesting how Ray's character was initially created to be an arm of J. R -- And how he was connected, romantically with Lucy-- It definitely changes in the series. I always liked the way Steve Kanaly portrayed Ray-- But the eventual determination that Ray is a son of Jock makes it uncomfortable when I re-watch these early episodes. I often wonder what the developers/writers would have done differently in these early episodes to smooth-out what happens later.?? --- Perhaps Lucy could have had ties with another ranch-hand (maybe a nephew of Ray)... which happens later too.... Oh well...

The first Southfork home was something that I'm glad they changed.

Decent episode but....

It's obviously still winter and somehow they're about to get a hurricane? Hahaha. Those California writers are clueless about weather.

Imho, there's a little dark humor in this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this live with my two friends who were really involved in this TV series. I found it funny that the two guys from Waco came up to hassle the Ewing family. And at the same time J.R. and Ray Krebbs were down in Waco hitting on their women. The dark comedy part was when they forced Sue Ellen to wear her Miss Texas bathing suit and sing the song while sobbing. Which she sang when she won the title. I laugh so much that my friends did not appreciate it. But after that, I got hooked on the show too.

Later on in the series...my old HIGHLAND PARK neighbor NORMAN BENNETT was the cook at the greasy spoon that Lucy worked at. He also was the preacher in TENDER MERCIES and a possible husband for SHIRLEY MacLaine's character in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT.

One exceptional thriller episode...

... and yet so untypical: the almost entire Ewing family taken in kind of hostage in the Southfork ranch by a pair of Texan losers in search for revenge for having their wives sleeping with J.R. and Ray! This is the kind of adventure you'll only see in some episodes of the two first seasons of that show. Never so much action and suspense will be provided in one single episode once the saga takes its definitive form around 1980. There's also here an good occasion to meet a young Brain Dennehy delivering a powerful performance as one of the betrayed husbands. The true nature of each character is revealed as well and for the very first time, Linda Gray gets a chance to impose a vulnerable character beyond the icy appearance. A damn good episode even Dallas-haters could enjoy watching .
