Mr O'Neill wants his pupils to fail
Tweekums10 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After attending a teaching conference Mr. O'Neill comes up with unusual homework assignment for Daria's class... they are to think of something they couldn't possibly succeed at but try anyway. Can Brittany become unpopular, can Kevin fail at sports, can Jane become conventional and can Daria stop her sister going to an upcoming fashion event at the mall?! Inevitably it doesn't go as planned and it is Mr. O'Neill ends up believing it is he who is the failure... it is up to Daria and Jane to make him believe he isn't a failure.

This was a pretty funny episode even if it did come a little too soon after 'A Tree Grows in Lawndale' where we also saw Kevin lose his place in the football team and end up feeling like a failure. For me the highlight was seeing Jane's attempts to conform and getting invited to try out for the cheerleading squad! Even the laid back Trent was disturbed by perky Jane. Overall I'd say this wasn't a classic episode but it was rather funny.

The 'F-word' is for FAIL, by the way....

Warning: Spoilers
Mr. O'Neill comes up with a rather stupid assignment and considering it's the "Daria" show, you know it will end up backfiring. While lecturing the class with this stupid inspirational drivel, O'Neill assigns them a project--he wants them to attempt something at which they will likely fail in order to learn that failure isn't such a bad thing. But, when some of the kids screw up their lives and the assignment works too well, Mr. O'Neill himself feels like a total failure and is ready to give up as a teacher. So, it's up to Daria and Jane to take pity on him and give him a pep talk to realize that he is NOT a total failure himself. And, to pay back the girls for their help, Mr. O'Neill agrees to, yuck, escort Quinn and the Fashion Club on an outing to the mall.

Overall, this is an okay episode but nothing more. It has its laughs but not as many as the typical episode, and there isn't anything particularly poignant or memorable about it. It's worth seeing but offers few reasons to remember it--other than you get to see Kevin wearing his loser shirt from the previous episode.
