Bernard Fox & Doris Singleton
poetcomic121 July 2016
There are three Dick Van Dyke's made delicious by the hilarious Welshman Bernard Fox. In this episode he is the pompous ass of a 'British' Sahib married to an abusive wife, Doris Singleton. Boy, Doris (one of Lucy's best friends on and off the set in I Love Lucy) could do this nasty little undertone like no woman before or since. Bernard Fox was the idiotic house detective in Never Bathe On Saturday as well as Laura's night school writing teacher who makes a pass at her in Teacher's Petrie. It is the secondary roles that added that little extra something to the great episodes. A whole roster of beloved character actors doing their 'shtick' - Carl Reiner was a connoisseur and many of these were friends of his.

My, times have changed...

Every day, Ritchie is coming home from school bumped and bruised. He eventually tells his parents that the person beating him up is a girl. So, Rob goes to the girl's house to talk to her father (Bernard Fox) about it. The girl denies doing anything and says she loves Ritchie. Rob and Laura think maybe Ritchie is lying...but Millie saw the girl wailing on Ritchie. This time, Laura goes to talk to the girl's mother, but this is a total waste of time. What's next?

This is an interesting episode because it really shows how times have changed, as the Petries have taught Ritchie NEVER to hit a girl...something that is rather sexist in its own way. Overall, a decent episode but one you don't need to see unless you are a nut like me who insists on seeing them all!
