Flight Plan 1968
zsenorsock16 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Max is providing security for a CONTROL courier named Buzby when he disappears when he goes to the bathroom. Like a Roach Motel, once spies check in to this bathroom they don't check out. This is the third courier to disappear ("and the last." 99 states. "Everyone has transferred out of the courier department."). Despite some funny stuff and a genuinely nice mixture of danger and comedy in a very Harold Lloyd style when Max uses the restroom himself, the OBVIOUS explanation of what happened to the couriers brings down this episode. A fairly quick inspection of plane would have revealed exactly what happened. The fact our top CONTROL agents can't figure that out is asking a bit much of the viewer. It would have been better if Max had NOT seen Buzby go into that restroom and then not come out. Then it might have played a little like Jody Foster's much later "Flight Plan" in which she's questioned if the disappearing person (her daughter in that case) was ever actually there to begin with.

Season four also seems to be the season of beating jokes into the ground until they are no longer funny. An amusing scene where Max fights the pilots and accidentally keeps turning the "fasten seat belts/no smoking" light on and off is just hammered until its painful. This kind of overselling a joke never seemed to happen in the earlier shows. They do the same thing in the 4th season premiere episode with the old "can't reveal a top secret until they are at 30,000 feet" bit. Instead of both gags being remembered as standouts, I remember them for how much they were beaten into the ground.

Max and 99 also finally tell the Chief about their plans to get married. The Chief is of course happy for them, but he reminds them CONTROL has a policy against agents getting married.
