Powerful story
searchanddestroy-127 September 2018
I just began this wonderful - so far - TV series from the late sixties and I am already amazed. The structure and acting are over the top. A big gold bullion heist is pulled on a remote airfielf in England - a kind of Great Train Robbery, but for a plane carrier - and a superintendant is in charge of the investigation. Peter Vaughan is the lead cop. But it seems he is not necessarily the ONLY lead character here. Supporting ones are very important too. Such as in this episode where the marksman, one of the gangsters who pulled the caper, is mainly involved. This topic focuses on him and his private life. I guess that in the other épisodes, the lead cop will explore the other aspects of the very organized and complex robbery involving a real military like commando in the pure SAS style. So our superintendant will probably have to investigate on many other dudes. The scene in this episode where the mrksman finds his wife in bed with her lover is exquisite....Best ever I guess for this very same situation. And the identification scene, as the same you had in Peter Yates' ROBBERY, is very good too. I'll keep in touch for other episode of the UK crime series which I highly recommand.

Crack Shot
Prismark1022 March 2024
The Gold Robbers is going to be dealing with the robber of the week. It is not just DCS Cradock trying to hunt done members of the gang in one fell swoop.

It is the psychological pressure on the robbers. Some of them are not hardened criminals but utilised because of some special skills they have.

Such as Freddy Lamb (Roy Dotrice) who works on the railways and spends all his spare time on the gun club. He is their ace marksman on the rifle. The crack shot who shot at the tyres of the police car escorting the gold bullion.

Cradock narrows down that the marksman will belong to a gun club. He even has a sketch of him based on the description from the little girl Sally.

What becomes apparent in this episode. Freddy Lamb mentally spirals downward. Not only the police are on his back. His wife is cheating on him and Freddy knows it.

Tired of being cuckolded, Freddy takes aim again. Cradock desperately wants to find out what Freddy knows.

This is very much a psychological episode. The breakdown of a suspect. It was a clever and efficient move by Cradock. Get the top police marksman on the case to help out.
