Beware the dreaded gooseberry.
Sleepin_Dragon12 May 2023
Dorothy is dating a man she met at The Grocery store, Raymond, but a depressed Sophia encroaches on their relationship, spending time with them. Blanche runs for Fashion show Chairman and enlists Blanche for help.

Sophia The gooseberry, poor Raymond, you have to feel for him, who on Earth could start dating someone, and have their mother in toe, a chilling thought indeed.

There are to be fair some very funny scenes, that moment where Dorothy asks Rose and Blanche for help in choosing pearls or a chain, the responses were hilarious, however, this one is tinged with sadness. It deals with Blanche's relationship with Sophia, the way she puts her first, and Sophia's loneliness.

I'm not sure how or why, but it put me in mind of Steptoe and Son, with Harold desperate for love and life, but shackled to his father, it felt a little similar.

8/10.

And Ma Makes Three (#3.20)

Warning: Spoilers
Sophia lost her good friend and is hanging on to Dorothy because she is lonely. Dorothy is dating at the time but Sophia follows them on every date and it makes the guy Dorothy is dating unhappy. Dorothy suggests going to Bahamas together but Sophia hears it and wants to go as well. Dorothy knows it is not an option and decides to stay with her mother for her not to be lonely, but Sophia goes with her new friends to Cancun.

A sweet episode with a lot of humor. It has funny moments such as Dorothy promises her date to have Sophia keep her teeth in her mouth when she picks them. And one feels bad for Sophia but luckily she gets herself back and is happy at the end.

Sophia play third wheel.

Warning: Spoilers
Sophia mentions missing her old friend Bernice who has moved away, waking up my "Designing Women" memories and wish that Sophia's friend was really Bernice Clifton. Alice Ghostly guest-starred as Stan's mother on one episode of "Golden Girls" and added much needed "Golden Girls" humor as Bernice. But to quote Sophia, "I digress", and here, she's lonely with friends either marrying, dying, moving away or sadly forgetting who they are. Dorothy invites her out golfing with her new boyfriend (James Karen), and months later, she's still tagging along with them. That's the main conflict, with Rose and Blanche competing for fashion show chairman. That leads to a very funny exchange where they judge Dorothy's inquiry of whether she should wear a chain or pearls, of course degrading her, but Bea Arthur pulls it off with her brilliant timing. This also features Rose's Sonia Klingenhoffer comic strip story which just adds confusion to the issues, but in a hysterical way. And just wait until you hear just what the crows said...

"That's what the crow said!"

S03-E20 is a very funny episode wherein Sophia is feeling lonesome after her best friend has moved away and Dorothy, wanting to help out, invites her to come golfing with she and her new beau (a charming James Karen)--but the couple is unable to shake Sophia's company afterwards. Meanwhile, Blanche and Rose are in the running for Fashion Show Chairman of the Tinkerbells (Blanche: "You can't be Fashion Show Chairman, Rose, you thought Giorgio Armani was a puppet on Ed Sullivan!"). Bea Arthur has to take a lot of good-natured ribbing here, but it's nice to see her being romantic with a man (the studio audience clearly appreciates it too), and Betty White gets a hilarious St. Olaf story about Sonia Klingenhoffer ("You two come back here or I'll be forced to follow you to your rooms and act it out with sock puppets!").
