As I write this, it is a sad time for British comedy, what with Ronnie Corbett and Victoria Wood having passed away within weeks of each other. The press did themselves no favours by belittling the era in which they were television stars - the 70's and 80's. The Observer's 'tribute' to Ronnie claimed the main reason for the Two Ronnies' huge ratings is that there were only three channels around then, and made a none-too subtle reference to ( why? ) Jimmy Saville. The 'i' commented on the 'fug of misogyny and racism' that allegedly passed for comedy back then. They are fully entitled to express these views, even if they are over the top.
The 'Goodies' episode 'Change Of Life' was one of the last the team ever made, during their brief stint at L.W.T. It is Bill's birthday, but he is not keen to celebrate as he is depressed at the thought of being 'raddled' ( old ). Graeme suggests various cosmetic treatments, none of which prove successful. A job comes the Goodies' way, but they cannot take it as they face unexpected competition from their own Robot, who feels the Goodies have passed their sell-by date. To get the job, the lads and the Robot must first compete in a test.
This is one of the funnier L.W.T. episodes, although its hard not to see it as a comment on the series itself, which by then was twelve years old. The test involves the Goodies putting on their original 1970's clothes, and facing obstacles such as Kitten Kong, flying geese, and ( shock! horror! ) Nicholas Parsons!
Funniest moment - Tim being punched in the face by the Robot's boxing glove!
