Have Pugilist, Will Fight

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is where Mel Brooks must have gotten a joke for "Blazing Saddles" from. Paladin comes to the aid of his old friend Brian Sykes, a fight promoter who's new fighter is in trouble because he hit a steer with one punch and knocked him down! Exactly what Mongo (Alex Karras) does in "Blazing Saddles". Only here we don't see it, its only talked about.

Paladin helps make sure the fight comes off despite the efforts of a crooked local sheriff. When Sykes fighter is arrested at the last minute on an old federal warrant, Paldin steps in as his second and boxes the former English heavyweight champion in a fistfight.

I realize that the TV budget was tight, but for all the fuss over how much money Sykes would lose if the fight were canceled, you'd think they could have tried to make the crowd look bigger by the way it was shot or cheat it a little. Instead, there only seem to be about 20 or 30 guys at the fight. How much money could be at stake? Paladin spends more money on laundry to keep his black shirts clean.

Rob the robbers

Not unpleasant but rather silly and undistinguished, this story of a godforsaken place under the thumb of a greedy sheriff milking it through a tax on rigged boxing contests - it does not really seem worthy of Paladin's talents. The final twist is more or less explained in advance, so it is a bit of a damp squib.
