INNER SANCTUM "Port of Regrets" 1954

INNER SANCTUM was a television series that ran for 40 episodes during 1954. It was based on the long running radio program (1941-1952) of the same name. It presented various mystery, terror and thriller stories. (There was also a b-film series released by Universal Studios in the 40's)

In this one, we have judge, Ian Keith, handing out the maximum sentence to a man convicted of 2nd degree murder. The man had killed his wife in a "crime of passion". Keith says murder is murder, no matter what the reason. That evening Keith hooks up with his much younger wife, Jean Shepherd. The two are going on a month long holiday to a small south-seas island. The wife, Shepherd, is not happy with the plans Keith has made. She would much rather spend a month in London or Paris.

The pair get off on a small middle of nowhere island, and check into the small local hotel. Keith finds the whole thing quite charming while Miss Shepherd is anything but pleased. A week in and all she does is complain about the heat, the locals, the food and everything else on the island.

The hotel manager, Stefan Schnabel fills the couple in on some of the local customs. It seems that none of the locals ever leave the island. A local legend has them all afraid that they might meet their double if they leave the island. This event would cause their death they believe.

While Keith is roaming the beaches and visiting sights, his wife has finally found herself an interest. Said interest is local gigolo, Michael Tolan. Tall, dark and handsome, Tolan and Miss Shepherd are soon doing a bit of the old horizontal mambo behind Keith's back. Shepherd has decided to dump hubby and hook up with Tolan. She has a box full of jewels etc that can keep them is cash for ages.

Needless to say the viewer knows where all this extracurricular activity is going to lead. Keith finds out about the dalliance from hotel manager, Schnabel. Keith of course keeps a pistol handy in his luggage. He confronts Shepherd and is less than amused when Shepherd laughs at him and says the marriage is over.

Of course said revolver goes off and Shepherd is soon dead in a heap on the floor. The hotel manager, Schnabel, sends for the local constable. He tells Keith that the whole matter will not be a problem. It was a "crime of passion" and the local law will understand. The Policeman now shows and enters the room. Keith looks up and his jaw drops, the constable is the spitting image of the man he had sent to jail for a "crime of passion".

This is a nicely done episode with a pretty good story and fine work from the cast.
