Body politics

Have said in some of, well make that a few too many of, my reviews for the previous Season 11 episodes that Season 11 was not an even season at all. There are some fabulous episodes, such as "Endurance", "Hubris", "Teenage Wasteland", "Ego" and "Judge Dread". Some episodes also disappointed, those in question being "Return", "Thin Ice", "Whose Monkey is it Anyway" and "Swept Away: A Very Special Episode". The others range between decent and very good.

While there are better episodes of Season 11 and that there was potential for it to be even better, considering that it is the season finale and with a story that sounds this good, "Deep Vote" is very good and intriguing. An episode with many expertly done things and not much wrong, but is just lacking in the extra something that the best episodes of the season had. While having very few of the things that made the disappointing episodes lacking.

Do agree that there are characters that come over as not particularly clever, with the killer being one of the stupider ones of the season.

Also thought that the conclusion was on the rushed side.

On the other hand, there is so much that is note-worthy in a good way. It does look good, with the usual slickness and subtle grit. Really liked too that the photography was simple and close up but doing so without being claustrophobic. The music has presence when used, and luckily it isn't constant, and when it is used it doesn't feel over-scored. The direction allows the drama to breathe while still giving it momentum as well.

Furthermore, the script is typically tight and intelligent with an uncompromising grit and the ability to make one think long and hard. The story is very absorbing throughout and the tension needed for the complications that the prosecution has to undergo to get their proof is very believable and strong. It is not too simple and neither is it too complicated, even with it being very eventful. The acting is excellent from all.

In conclusion, very good end to an uneven season. 8/10.

So when the machines break down, the voters are given paper ballots.

An old man was talking to his grandson about baseball. Suddenly, a car accident occurred, with a girl dead and another injured. Shortly before the crash, the girl honked the horn to a man over a parking space and that man shot at her. The victim (a former teacher now working at an online company) used to argue with her husband, but she didn't have any enemies. By watching the CCTV, detectives realized she wasn't the target, because another car (same model) drove by a girl resembling her got out of the garage just few seconds after her. The real target is a reporter (Kate Jennings Grant) used to put her life at risk in war zone. Once the pro killer is caught, he admits someone else called the shot and she is an upstanding woman: a senator. She was elected by a bunch of vote and a broken machine helped her winning the elections: the reporter found out the truth, but she's not willing to unveil the source, so the politician could get away with it....

A dirty politician with connection to local gangster, a dumb killer, an even more dumb reporter (the source is more meaningful than her life), an unlikely Appeal Court; anyway an enjoyable episode, in which Abbie admitted to leave the office to move up the ladder.

Shades of 2020

I actually saw this episode on inauguration day, ironically. Hidden ballots, voter fraud, etc. All too familiar.

Politics making some very strange bedfellows

A woman is shot and killed in what first looks like road rage. But as Jesse Martin and Jerry Orbach further investigate this was a hit. What is worse that the shooter got the wrong woman.

The intended target was investigative reporter Kate Jennings Grant and she was looking into any number of stories. But the one that made her a target was a disputed election for State Senator that had to occur on the Upper East Side of Manhattan the only area of the borough where Republicans are reasonably competitive.

Shades of the presidential election. Someone made off with some absentee ballots and instead of destroying them, held them for God knows what reason. It's what I can't figure out. They were held in custody of some mob figures who have a connection to State Senator Deborah Hedwall, a member of 'the Rainbow Coalition'.

Having worked at the Board of Elections in Brooklyn in my younger days I could be critical of this in ways not normal for most viewers. I think though for Hedwall there could be a special election in her future if she gets the right judge, if she doesn't go to jail
