TV chapter with Chris joining forces with a valiant bunch to help unfortunate Seminolas against a nasty militia of Confederate soldiers
ma-cortes10 September 2014
This is the first episode in which Seminola Indians hire an American gunslinger to organize the defense their village against brutal Confederate Colonel . Chris Larabee (Michel Biehn) holds a dark past , as his wife and son died in a fire and doesn't much care if he lives or dies , he then forms a misfit group of men to protect an Indian village from an outlaw gang of ex-Confederate soldiers bent on continuing the Civil War . As oppressed Seminolas assemble seven gunfighters to help defend their homes and a mine of gold . The magnificent are Vin Tanner (Eric Close ) , Josiah Sanchez (Ron Perlman) , Buck Wilmington (Dale Midkiff) , Ezra Standish Anthony Starke) , Nathan Jackson (Rick Worthy) , among others . As the motley group set off in rescue some Indian villagers . Their fee : the princely sum of five dollars apiece . As Chris and his buddies , each of whom comes for a different reason , must free an Indian village attacked by nasty soldiers who are devastating the small location . All of them get a chance to redeem themselves . Later on , the group develops a plan to secure the villagers defend it against enemy attack who even use a cannon.

Chris character was originally played by Yul Brynner in two occasions and one performed by Lee Van Cleef and George Kennedy and in TV is performed by Michael Biehn . Michael Biehn as a two-fisted pistolero is pretty well . Despite bearing no resemblance to Yul Brynner, including a full head of hair, Michael Biehn takes over the role of Chris Adams . In this first chapter the story is classic and traditional , following its interesting premise in subsequent sequels , including customary misfit band formed by an eclectic gang with diverse characters as well as speciality . In fact , it seems to be a remake from original picture directed by John Sturges , as it bears remarkable resemblance , similar plot and characters , but displays a slight style . As the magnificent seven include Vin Tanner, a former bounty hunter and ordinary fugitive; J.D. Dunne, a youthful, wannabe gunslinger ; Buck Wilmington, a current gunfighter and ladies man - not necessarily in that order ; Josiah Sanchez, an ex-preacher fighting his own personal demons ; Ezra Standish, a Southern con artist and card gambler and Nathan Jackson, an ex-slave with medical knowledge based on his years in the Union army . The film gets action Western , exciting riding, shootouts , it's fun and entertaining , although nothing new , being a remake from famous Sturges/Brynner picture and produced by Walter Bernstein who did the original adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's film . The movie contains some moment of violence and even touching on the relationships between the Indians and the Magnificent . William Roberts wrote the screenplay that is substantially what you see on screen , being added writings by the same producers Frank Q. Dobbs , Chris Black , Pen Densham , Richard Lewis and John Watson. Very good support cast, including notorious actors playing ¨The Magnificent¨ . There appears several prestigious actors such as Tony Burton of Rocky saga , Laurie Holden , subsequent more known for Walking Dead series , Ned Romero -usual in Indian roles- as Seminole Chief and special mention to Kurtwood Smith as cruel Col. Emmett Anderson . Breathtaking and memorable musical score by Don Harper based upon the classic soundtrack by Elmer Berstein , whose score is one of the best-known ever composed . Appropriate as well as glowing cinematography by Jack Conroy . Being filmed on location in Mescal ,Old Tucson , Arizona . This TV picture was professionally directed by Geoff Murphy , though with no originally . Geoff had previously realized other Westerns such as The Last Outlaw and Young Guns II . This acceptable Western is entertaining and amusing , if you like classic Western ,you'll enjoy this one .

The first film of ¨The Magnificent seven¨ series was the superior and enduringly popular film , ¨The magnificent seven¨ (John Sturges,1960) with Charles Bronson , James Coburn , Robert Vaughn , it is equally remake of ¨The seven samurais¨ (Akira Kurosawa) . After that , followed ¨The return of the seven¨(Burt Kennedy,1966), again with Yul Brynner with other surviving members of The Seven as Jordan Christopher , Claude Akins , Robert Fuller , Julian Mateos , Emilio Fernandez , Rodolfo Acosta . It was followed by ¨Guns of the magnificent seven¨ (Paul Wendkos,1969) with George Kennedy as Chris , James Whitmore , Monte Markham , Reni Santoni , Bernie Casey and Joe Don Baker and finally ¨The Magnificent seven ride¨ by George McCowan with Lee Van Cleef as Chris , James B. Sikking , Ralph Waite , William Lucking , and continued with a TV series and a Television movie realized in 1998 , being also produced by Walter Mirish , as usual .

Still Holds Up

Warning: Spoilers
Ah, the late 90s/2000. When men were men, and the sheep were nervous. "Ghosts of the Confederacy" (aka "Pilot", according to the official DVD) does a good job of bringing the Seven together. Most of them are either lifted from the original movie, or composites of characters from the movie and its sequels. Ezra, in the biggest mix, is like Lee in the original as a coward until push comes to shove, but also prejudiced like Slater in 'Guns of the Magnificent Seven' and a friend-to-children like Bernardo in the original. He also gets the "Your parents have real courage" line from Bernardo, and is greedy like Dexter. J.D. is a white-man version of Chico, and Nathan is both Cassie (former slave) and Levi (knife-throwing) from "Guns". I guess they didn't trust Perlman around children, or something.

Michael Biehn is Chris (a character who went through several actors), and Eric Close is Vin (who was Steve McQueen in the original movie). The concept is cleaned up a bit for late 90s and network TV sensibilities: Ezra shows a bit of prejudice toward Nathan, but they have to be teammates so that couldn't last. And they hang out in one town. And you get Ron Perlman, who is his usual affable self and plays an ex-holy man. And Dale Midkiff, who hams it up as a ladies' man.

What happened to Close and Midkiff, anyway?

There's more characterization, and the Seven get more personality then they did in the movie. Particularly Vin (who he reveals has a bounty on his head), but the show plays up Nathan and his romance with the black woman in the village. Because heaven forbid if they had Nathan falling in love with a white woman. That pairing goes to Chris (Biehn) and town newspaper editor Mary (Laurie Holden), as they have a love-hate relationship from the get-go. Of course, Chris gets some background as well, with a wife and son who died in a fire.

Kurtwood Smith as the stringy-haired tough-talking Anderson is good. Although I keep expecting him to kick someone in the backside and yell "Dumbass!" The rest of the cast is forgettable, primary because the focus is on the Seven and Anderson, since Anderson is the bad guy. And takes drugs (laudanum) to boot,

Basically M7 is a deconstructed Western, in a time when deconstructed Westerns were big (i.e., 'The Unforgiven' and 'Silverado'). And... there's nothing wrong with that. Like 'Silverado', M7 is almost a parody of the Western, but is done by clears who fondly have a fondness for genre: Pen Densham and John Watson, who went on to do 'Poltergeist the Legacy', the newer 'Outer Limits', and the 2002-03 'Twilight Zone'.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
