THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Ultimate Computer Affair– 1965
This is the 32nd episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum. plays Illya Kuryakin, G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.
This episode returns to the winning form after the stumble out of the gate of the first two, season two episodes. UNCLE is sent to South American to find a THRUSH super computer. THRUSH happens to keep the device at a penal colony deep in the jungle. Agent Illya Kuryakin, played by David McCallum gets himself arrested and tossed into the prison.
Back in New York, Napoleon Solo, (Robert Vaughn) talks prison reformer and inspector, Judy Carne into helping UNCLE. UNCLE flies her to South America to do an inspection of the prison for the UN. She is also going to drop off some small explosive devices for McCallum to use. The plan is to find the computer and blow it to hell.
Agent Vaughn follows and is soon gobbled up by Prison Commander, Roger Carmel, who actually works for THRUSH. At the same time Miss Carne has delivered her goods to McCallum. McCallum, who has been casing the prison, has discovered where THRUSH has the computer hidden. He blows the hell out of it and then tries for an escape from the prison.
Vaughn however has found out that the computer McCallum destroyed was a phony. It was bait in case UNCLE tried to do what they just did. The real computer is hidden in the home of THRUSH boss, Charles Ruggles. Ruggles, as it so happens, is hosting a meeting of top THRUSH higher ups. He is going to demonstrate how the computer will help in the battle against UNCLE.
Vaughn overhears this and makes a break for freedom. Soon, McCallum, Vaughn and Miss Carne are all grabbed up. But they manage to break out again and plant more explosives on the right computer this time. Up goes the computer, along with THRUSH boss Ruggles and his man, Carmel.
A very entertaining episode featuring a top flight story and fine work from the entire cast and crew. Character actor Ruggles was on film, then television from 1914 to 1968. Judy Carne would become famous on that late 1960's staple, LAUGH-IN.
