A Little Reality for Mary
Hitchcoc6 February 2017
This is another episode in Mary's revolving door of handsome men. A handsome architect shows up at her door and wants to sketch her apartment for a book he is writing. They hit it off right away. It's interesting how many people just walk into her place. Anyway, they begin dating and while they have a nice time, he is really closed up. There is also a kicker. He is divorced and has a son. But it turns out that the son is 24 years old. For Mary, she suddenly realizes that this isn't so unusual if you're thirty and meet a person a few years older. It leads to some interesting developments. One is that the young guy is a Junior, same name as Dad. So when Ted Baxter meets him, he thinks he is the guy dating Mary. It's pretty funny.

Great looking guys

I don't really love the 'dating' episodes where often Mary stops being funny and instead goes all soppy. The guys are often real catches and the episode ends on a hopeful note, but usually we never hear from the guy again in any later episode.

This one is a dating episode in essence, but it is dressed-up with comedy elements that do work quite well.

Bradford Dillman is charming handsome (and forward) architect Matt Bryan who is studying Mary's apartment house. They quickly hit it off.

There are a few story ideas comically explored here: Everyone marvels at Matt's youthful appearance (Bradford Dillman really is about the same age as Ed Asner and Gavin MacLeod). Then there are surprises when his son (John Rubinstein) is much older than expected. A third thread is less comedic and explores the idea that Matt Senior keeps the relationship with Mary superficial due to fear of committment, then nervously proposes marriage.

Dillman and Rubinstein play their parts well.

You Certainly Are a Big Boy

This is a decent if unspectacular episode of the show, which offers some nice funny moments.

It does drift off towards the end though, not really knowing what the focus of the second act needs/wants to be.

Good overall though.
