A Delicate Topic
dougdoepke21 November 2014
The second season kicks off with a very delicate topic. Attractive, young Helen has worried herself into a collapsing colon. Now she must have surgery if she's to survive. But that means opening a new elimination canal and wearing a bag to collect the human waste. She can't stand the idea, and her graphic rejection speech is not something heard on 50's TV. Karen Steele delivers a first-rate performance as the afflicted Helen. It's easy to sympathize with her predicament, and I'm not sure medical science has improved upon the recourse offered her. Note too that the entry is directed by ace movie director John Brahm, e.g. The Lodger (1944). With this difficult topic, the series shows that it's not afraid to tackle any medical problem touching on human frailty. I expect the entry won renewed respect for the series and for its second season.
